robvulcan
Right then this is what I have got done in the last hour or so. I have used citadel chainmail to highlight the bulled and front of the engine then given them a coat of Underwoods Floor Polish from Lakeland. The tiddlers ones just got the Floor polish The tiddlers (XM595) getting more white on the intakes an the inner fuselage mounts are to be painted white as these can be seen by a scrutinizing eye. The tail of the big one is getting back dated and filed into the original shape. And now for more coffee filing gluing and painting. YAY
robvulcan
Well Its a good day today. Just finished the 301 faces and then this lovely bit of resin arrived from Wolfpack. This is the first time I have used these but they look the business. They come with great representations of 201 /202 faces which will come in handy later on. Here is what you get inside and a comparison of the 202 and 301 faces. Also today in the post, sent to me on loan for a read by Scimitar on here is this FANTASTIC book with a photo of every single Vulcan in it. Fabulous item indeed. Cheers Scimitar Another update soon. robvulcan
Update. I have continued to back date the tail and remove panel lines. I still need to do the other side. I started work on the incredibly modest cockpit. Its good enough though seeing as no one will ever see it. I cut off the mold attachments of the Wolfpack Resin intakes and then dry fitted the Airfix 301 Turbines which fit ok and I guess look ok but I am not sure if I might be able to do something else with them. Hopefully soon I might start getting wings etc together. I normally have It done by now but this time I am putting more effort in. I just hope it pays off. robvulcan
Can anyone tell me the best glues to use for attaching resin and plastic. I was thinking CA but anything else. Whats best for strength and longevity ?
nimrod54
Can anyone tell me the best glues to use for attaching resin and plastic. I was thinking CA but anything else. Whats best for strength and longevity ? CA is probably best for strength Rob especially if the resin parts are weighty. I have used a glue called Gators Grip for fixing etch and have recently used it to fix nose weights but it does take time to set. It is an acrylic based glue and cleans up with water. To me it seems similar to No More Nails, which according to the makers UniBond sticks anything to anything so that could also be an option.
robvulcan
Cheers mate. I am amazed at the amount of glues that look and smell like PVA but with different qualities. It's only the past months I have recently discovered this previously being of the ignorant position of "that's what you use for card models n stuff" I must admit I still have little faith in it for some things. I was wondering about epoxy but that's probably over kill and will likely melt stuff I guess I need to educate myself on glues as I have only ever used poly, Super glue, PVA, Uhu (nasty stuff Uhu ) Cheers Rob
blueliner
15 B2's? One can never have enough Vulcan's. .... or Spitfires, Mosquitoes, Victors, or more Vulcans. Hunters & Canberras too, and Spitfires and even more Vulcans. Always wanted to do a delta force collection: Vulcan B.1, B.2(3), B-58, Javelin, F-102, F-106, Typhoon, Avro 707s, Boulton Paul P.111 and P.120, XF-92, XB-70, and more Vulcans. Jeez...I forgot the Fairey Delta 2 and another Vulcan. Edited March 11, 2014 by blueliner

robvulcan
Well on goes the project I am now turning my attention to the cock pit and insides. Here is the seats etc and instrument panel area receiving a coat of ocean grey as a base coat then I can add the black and try highlighting it perhaps. Its gonna be dark in there. I see I have forgotten to add the bulkhead rear to the seats. I normally leave all this stuff out on a Vulcan but not this time. I will add the decal for the instrument panel first then the control columns afterwards. I love the look of this old product stamp. very cool. robvulcan
Has anyone got a front on shot of a 301 Olympus engine. I am finding it hard to source one. Cheers Rob
robvulcan
I need to sort out the pipes but for now I decided to darken them in there anyways. I added the bulkhead now at the rear of the pit. Now for the instrument panel. In the middle is the original kit boxing. and oldest less well printed version. To the right is the Falklands boxing printed by cartograph and the left is the latest version with the new decal sheet for XH558. Which to pick. I am guessing the one on the right as that is likely to better reflect an in service Vulcan seeing as XH558 has had lots of changes inside and is IIRC about 10 tons lighter than she used to be. FZ6
This Vulcan is coming along really well. Those wolfpack intakes and engine faces look like a huge improvement over the kit parts. I might have to track down a set. Great stuff love to see photos of her and hope I can help in some way. Cheers Rob I'll have to post some photos of how mine is progressing when I get the chance. The will still need to be fitted carefully and blended in. I have already been test fitting them and working out were I will need to thin down the lip of the intakes on the Vulcan to make them fit best and cut down the amount of work I needed to do. Thats the trick with these old kits is to keep dry fitting and trying things out and make adjustments before gluing. That's what I find fun and rewarding in modelling. It presents a challenge and the end result you can really feel proud of. (I do enjoy a shake and bake too though.) Just blacking out the insides. Love to see how yours is progressing. robvulcan
Well I have been brush painting the insides Black using Revel Aqua Matt Black and a dash of Flow Improver. here the seats are loosely fitted just to give a look of how its going. The insides of the engine bays are blacked out too but when I am done in here this may well not be seen if I can get some tubes to fit the insides. that are the right diameter. It looks like the 301s have an inner tube of a smaller diameter. The short exhaust pipes on the kit are about the right length but they seem to flare out at an angle and seem to be straight on the real thing so I am guessing if I take a file to them this might sort them out and also thin them at the same time. So It seems this is going the way of the Spitfire more time on the insides than out side... So far. Cheers all Rob
robvulcan
Good morning folks. Today I have given the black areas of the cockpit a single brush coat of Underwoods Floor Polish which has given a great satin finish. In preparation for the instrument panel decal. I will just let this dry and then get the cockpit decal on then hopefully over the weekend I can really go for it. I am considering picking up some Mr Hobby Liquid Putty. Any good ? How tough is it. ? Cheers Rob
general melchett
Good progress Rob, as for liquid putty it's great for small gaps and I mean small but it tends to shrink and so quite a few pin holes form along the seam which need refilling, I only use it for hairline seam gaps to be honest applied with a toothpick and then wiped with a damp cotton bud, (Wilkos love me!)...if you want something for larger gaps, which I think applies to this kit try the Perfect Putty..it's great stuff , dries hard and wont shrink. (I put John onto it and he seems pleased). Cheers, Melchie..

But will get some of the perfect putty and have a play with it. Cheers Rob
robvulcan
Well its update time. Been held up as I lost one of the wing halves !.... Big enough thing to loose. It was hiding under the instructions.... So I set about painting the fighter style controls for the cockpit. I worked more on the reshaping of the tail fin and looks like my plan has worked polishing out the surface reveals a very slight bevel were the panel lines once were which gives a much more in scale representation of were the panels are. To my eyes at least. Here is the decal in place for the instrument panel which looks pretty good to me but I doubt we will see it again !. Then I fitted the control sticks and glued from behind. Then I got the seats in. I might add the pilots not sure yet. However it wont do much for seeing that control panel. Right off to source coffee again then I can stick the wing halves together. robvulcan
Just enough:-)) HAHAHAHAHA. Very good dude.LOL. Suppose I can easily find out by getting one of my others thats a flyer find the point were the wheels balance and find a suitable weight. I guess If I pack out the bottom of the nose with milliput I should be on for a winner. Cheers Rob
RNoAF Aerobatic Team
Sorry, mate! I HAD TO!!! lol Just saw on my Nimrod conversion that they recommend at least 75g of weight in the nose:-) So.... you might need a little. I can`t remember how much I had in mine all those years ago.,....
robvulcan
Sorry, mate! I HAD TO!!! lol Just saw on my Nimrod conversion that they recommend at least 75g of weight in the nose:-) So.... you might need a little. I can`t remember how much I had in mine all those years ago.,.... Cheers mate your gonna have fun with that Nimrod Conversion she will be VERY heavy I imagine.. Right update time. Here I am filing and trimming down the inner portion of the 8 mating surfaces of the wings and fuselage halves to make them but up together closely with little to no gaps. I do this on all my Vulcan builds as it virtually eliminates the need to shim later or fill. But I nearly forgot this time ! Over the years it seems models get weak and become brittle. Shame I like to build them to last. Over the years I notices Airfix Vulcans are very spacious inside the wings and once when I handed one of my old builds to someone they squeezed the wing and the leading edge separated with a crack ! I don't know if the new glue becomes this way as old glue did in the 90s I hope not but just incase. I am putting in some inner strengthening spars using the kits sprue for the sake of longevity and reducing the natural flex in the wing. If this model is to do shows I want her strong I have heard some disater storyies about back packs sweeping models off tables by the "easily startled" and then I have heard about some kid knocking all the canopies down on some models and breaking them only for the owner to be told (apparently) by the parents "They're only models !"...."you can make more".. So for good measure my refueling probe will be made from steel wire and locked into the floor of the cockpit firmly and symbolically raising a finger to the modern paranoiac world of health and safety. robvulcan
I am really enjoying this now and the wing supports are really helping. Its almost like airfix included secret extra parts they fit perfect and do the job. The wings feel far more satisfying to hold with them. and a hella lot stronger. Coffee time.
robvulcan
And just a few more for to be on the safe side. It seems very quiet on here compared to christmas. I would have thought it would have been quieter then due to family obligations shopping etc. Or is everyone enjoying the sun unlike me still happy in the man cave with coffee and kits ahahah. lol
