robvulcan
So while I am deciding what to do next with the big'n , The little'n is having its air intakes prepped for painting white, Its scary how similar the Dragon kit parts are in looks to the Airfix kit. I am not using these intakes as I am awaiting the Wolfpack ones but here is a comparison for you, 1/72 and 1/200th Cheers Rob
robvulcan
Now I am getting the engine faces ready for painting again the similarity is startling also compare the bulkhead for the wheel well I think Dragon took a lot of inspiration from the Airfix kit. I am not certain which engine type comes with the wolfpack kit and I need to check these with photos of 300s Turbo Jets but I think these are quite accurate from memory. I thin it was only the 200s that had larger bullets and the 100s with much larger still bullets on them. The Intakes of the smaller one are now ready for a coat of white. dadgaddad
Many years ago when I was a boy, I was travelling over Salisbury Plain when we heard a sound like the ground was tearing itself apart. I looked out of the car window and there, seemingly close enough to reach out and touch was a Vulcan. Now that was back in the 70s and I could be wrong about it but in those days hours and hours spent poring over Airfix catalogues made me an expert in aircraft recognition and they aren't easy to mistake. Seeing the Vulcan fly past at the Cosford show last summer, I was surprised at how quiet she was. Until they opened her up, of course. That was the sound I remembered.

Albeback52
OH yes... If it was a b1 and b1a I would buy at least a modest 30 of them, Along with a Victor b1 too, The early V bombers are always forgotten it seems. Its always B2. but for the Valiant we really need the originals, The Vulcan b1 is totally different to the B2. Totally different smaller wings, different tail, tail cone, engine tunnels, wheels, langing gearl legs, exhausts, air intakes, engine faces, etc etc. That would be a dream come true for me. We get marks of every other plane so why not V bombers. I am optimistic it will happen because Airfix have done wonders giving us the kits I thought we would never get. Nimrod, TSR2, Canberras, Javelin, Sea Vixen, Valiant ETC. Airfix are a great company. Of course, a Valiant B2 would REALLY be the icing on the cake!!. robvulcan
Ooh Goody, a tiddler too. Yes Love the Tiddlers this will be used to test out a paint scheme. Yea she aint as loud these days not since 2008 when they put the new reduced power engines in, over the origina 1992 uprated 202s from when she was a tanker. Still great though I knew you were vulcan mad Rob but 15 ! My hats off to you sir. Go for wheels down and bomb bay open on the airfix one Make the build last and enjoy the build its a great kit with some tlc Yea mad aint I, Great to hear from you mate I still remember you build of this kit absolutely wonderful that. I hope I can do something good with this one. Of course, a Valiant B2 would REALLY be the icing on the cake!!. Allan It really really would be a very comforting and satisfying moment in modeling as would a resin kit to mod the existing kit, The black Valiant was epic and looked like something Batman would use. Love it. OK...You are not allowed to do a South African one! Or in Post 27 are you hiding a Buccaneer ? RG ahaha no chance of that. They are just some unused SAAF decals from my old Airfix Bucc I made a few years ago I am not even going to use them. Cartograph ones. I do have an old matchbox bucc on the shelf of doom but that will be wrap around RAF when I get back to her. Cheers Rob
dadgaddad
On my first visit to the Cosford museum I spent ages looking for the Vulcan but couldn't see it anywhere. Finally I gave up thinking I must be in the wrong place only to realise I was standing directly under its wing! My 4 yr old son loves the place so much that we go quite regularly and often sit under the Vulcan and eat our sandwiches.

I am only down the road from it myslelf. I remember when she was outside. Its a great shame Cosford scraped the last B1 as late as 1986 makes me so angry she did not look in as bad condition as they said. not when you compare her to XL391
robvulcan
Well I have not got that much done today. we had a delivery of wood to shift down the garden which was a bit of a work out. I did spray these white last night with humbrol rattle can matt white. I Can now brush paint the turbine faces and the intake halves for the tidler can be joined and then have yet more white sprayed down them. I had got distracted with some other models today and started a whiff project. Busy few days ahead and away over the weekend so there may not be much progress till Monday. general melchett
Good start Rob, looking forward to progress. I've just PM'ed you with the requested list of corrections I feel are needed for the beast so have a quick read before you go any further. I'm calling in favours to find any more info on '597's camo scheme between 1965 and '68, no luck so far but its early days and I'll let you know if anything comes to light. I'm also having a look at correcting the 301 pipes too, but it's a bit hectic at the moment with a lot going on as you know... Get at it man...Cosfords just around the corner.... FZ6
Looking forward to seeing your progress on this one. I've just rescued my Vulcan from the shelf of doom where its languished since 1999 and am trying to do a restoration on it so I'm hoping to pick up some hints and tips. Beardylong
How about 'BlueSteel' as your new name, linking in with your passion?! I think it was White Ensign who were doing a bomb bay kit ... yup, just checked: https://www.whiteensignmodels.com/p/WEM+172+Avro+Vulcan+Bomb+Bay+Detail+Set+PE+7255C/15241/#.UxiDmOd_vuQ I really enjoyed my Vulcan build - learnt loads but took ages! My moulding off the venerable Airfix tool was not so hot - I'd love to see a new generation kit! That would be a real beast!

Great stuff Andy and thanks I got the list and a very interesting read. It would be good to see if there is a way to make the exhausts look more refined. I see the airfix ones are quite a fair representation but a bit thick and lack the slight angling out that 301s seem to have like 200s but to a much lesser degree. I can't decide on doing her in either the odd DSG Green and MSG patch scheme or the MSG Green scheme. I really love the more common MSG and Green scheme as I am used to seeing it but I do have a love of the Wrap around scheme so I might maker the darker version as It would be nice to see what it looks like in color. We will see. Long way off that stage yet at least. Cheers Rob Looking forward to seeing your progress on this one. Hi thanks for the suggestion I need a new user name for some other forums I have joined I might change my name on here but I have been going by this name for the last 4 years or so.. I would dearly love to see a new tooling for this a b1 and b1a pack with a b2/k2 offering with a choice of exhausts would be great. and Blue steel edition. I really hope the victor gets some love soon I actually think its the victor that needs a new kit first as this kit really is not as bad as many make out. It just takes a bit of love care and planning. robvulcan
Some progress I have sanded off the panel lines on one of the wings to give the clean look. Meanwhile the tiddler has the intake halves joined. Once dry I can get in there with the wet and dry and then spray more white down them. More soon right after more Coffee ! robvulcan
Update time. Sanding of the panel lines continues..... Its actually quite time consuming doing this. I am using a 1500 grit pad and the good bit about this is that when its painted you can still very subtly see the lines. The intention is to use chalk to create highlights in certain areas to break it up but give the clean but used look as this one will be high gloss like the real ones were. Its defiantly going to be XM597 Just got to make a decision on colors. The engine faces of the tiddler and the little one are receiving paint now. I am hoping to try and build some depth here with some black and a wash. The citadel paint has flow improver in thats it and as you can see it flows lovely with the brush. The Tiddler receives the blue steel bay and will be XM595 as per the kit but in an earlier condition with none of the day-glow dumbos and with original nose minus refueling probe and TFR thimble It is interesting again how very similar Dragons is to the Airfix kit with the little corner pieces just like the Airfix Its almost a smaller clone in some ways. The Tiddlers Intakes were run through with 1200 wet n dry now I can paint them white again to smooth them up. Cheers Folks Edited March 10, 2014 by robvulcan
robvulcan
I have tried to add more depth by my usual method with the Citadel Nuln Oil wash and added flow improver. Using capillary action from a loaded brush. Just got to wait for that coat to dry then I might add some brown too and a different lighter silver for the bullets perhaps. Then a coat of clear varnish to make them reflect a little. In the mean time I am still sanding the panel lines of the big vulcans parts No further work on tiddler yet. Cheers Rob
nimrod54
Looks like you have had quite a productive time today Rob. I still haven't tried the Nuln Oil wash yet, just waiting for the right kit to try it on (one where it won't matter too much if I c**k things up ) but I will give it a go soon. Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing more of your progress.

You should get some and give it ago on some scraps of sprue and random objects. Make sure you add some W&N Flow Improver though. robvulcan
Nice Rob, having fun I see...did you see the photos of '597 I sent ? Hi General sir. Yes I did I though I had replied to you. I mustn't have sorry. Been a bit distracted this weekend with putting my grandads ashes in the soil. The photos are great so she did wear DSG and MSG schemes in the 60s It's great to confirm that scheme Actually existed. Cheers Rob
