Love the base!

May I suggest that you reposition the Vulcan into level flight by putting a 90 degree bend in the wire. You could then paint the horizontal piece of wire black/dark grey to simulate the jet exhaust (and add some short lengths to the other exhausts) and paint the vertical portion silver to hide it a bit?

HAHAHA If I can find a way to do that I will. That would be most excellent. Perhaps a Z gauge railway person might do the job ! lol.

Your full of great ideas Martin ;)

An N gauge figure suitably adapted would work out just right as it would give an approximate scale height of 7 to eight feet in 1/200 scale, the most commonly reported height of the creature.

Yeah, Rob. Where have I heard that one before.

Great diorama.

David

HAHAHA I love that mate. Sarcasm at its very best mate ;)

Another good start Rob!

John

Cheers dude. I recon you should do a dio for one of your canberras. A bit of runway and some people around would be great fun ;)

Totally agree mate. The wire on it is not final and looks damn awful I know. I need to find something better for it. Its just piece of coat hanger. I need something finer. ;)

Awesome!!

Cheers Val :)

That was a good guess then. I will need a z gauge photographer then mind you a few wild animals in there would be nice.

I know trees come in different sizes but I am not sure these scale well for 1/200 the Vulcans wings are about 112 ft wide so I guess shes about 60ft above ground level but then that’s ok as they did often fly them as low as 50 ft and some lower (crazy)

This is just a test dio. To try out sponge I do like the look but they need more care and work. I have an idea to get a much bigger piece of insulation foam board and file out a large valley with forest either side and a frozen lake below in resin. I then want to find some very fine long lengths of string or wire, Lycra, fishing line that’s strong but almost invisible to just string tight from one side of the valley to the other and have the Vulcan seeming to float above it all. I reckon it could look pretty super. especially with another in formation maybe ;)

Rob, you continue to amaze. That is really cool looking.

Cheers mate good to know I can amaze someone ahah.

;)

Could you use clear plastic rod to support the model Rob?

Fantastic dio mate :)

Hi Woody mate. yea I could though this dio was just a test dio to see if the sponge would look anything like trees. The answer is yes if I took more care.

My plan is to actually make a much larger dio base about 12 inch square or a bit more. Out of Insulation foam again. Kingspan is good. Then sanding it to the shape of a big deep valley. Forest each side with a frozen lake at the bottom. snow everywhere and then have the Vulcan seeming to Float in the middle of the valley.

But to do this I need to find some extremely thin almost invisible wire that I can tension to take a bit of weight and string it across the valley anchored either side in the trees.

Anyone got any ideas on thin thread or string that would be up to the job. I was thinking fishing line but much smaller.

Cheers Rob ;)

That little Vulcan looks amazingly real in some of those test pics Rob.

When you've got your final dio base sorted I foresee some really impressive photos....... Are you making the base big enough to capture a vertical downwards photo without the garden table creeping into shot? Or will that be a photoshop effort?

Cheers mate. I think my choice of colour paid off with the realism. My experiment I did was on this one for the larger one. I am happy with it.

As for the Dio well I might have a crack at that in a mo. Got a piece of kingspan here. When your talking vertical shots. Do you mean of the top surfaces as if spotted by an interceptor, Or head on coming at you down the valley.? Both sound a good idea to me.

Do you know were I can get some extremely thin but strong string/wire/line thats near invisible ?

Cheers Rob ;)

Rob,

Think Fishing tackle shops.

Hi Pete. I was actually looking at this but I do not know if its fine enough. It says its super tough, and invisible under water. But How visible will it be in the air. I guess I should try some and see.

I would have thought it would be fine against the snowy background

That is a good point. All the white will likely hide it. yet it could also highlight it I guess. I will grab some to try but if anyone knows of anything better. Let me know ;)

just read this all the way through. real labour of love and it looks great, never tried pva to mask off canopies. how does that work and how do you get get it off again?

jeff

Cheers Jeff you must be brave to have read through all my waffle ahha. Its not over yet and plenty more going on in my other threads. Said I would do less Vulcan's this year but with 6 on the go at the moment and more planned for something in the future It might be my most prolific year yet.

The PVA tip is something I picked up of a Vulcan thread years ago. When I was wondering to myself "how the hell do you mask that off !"

Make sure its Childs PVA that washes off. I use hobby craft red label PVA its weak and can be picked off with a cock tail stick but "CAREFULLY" don’t scratch it under neath rushing.

Just pick at it gently and push gently and eventually it will lift off hopefully in one piece. Take your time and be careful and it works a treat.

But make sure you :

1. let the PVA Fully dry off Id leave it a day ideally if possible it will grey over and you can see you masked it right.

2. make sure your paint is totally dry before trying to lift it in case it peels.

3. I have not needed too myself but you could if you have a problem use a little water to reactivate the glue. and remove it that way.

I use a damp cotton bud at the end and just give the windows a little wipe and the Johnsons Klear will be doing its magic for you.

I mask this way for most my models now just don't be too picky and slow with practice you will move quite fast with it using not too much and not too little glue and flowing it into the edges of the frame using capillary action.

You do not want to thin a coat over all. If its thickish you have a skin to pick at that will like to stick together. If its too thin its more awkward to get off.

It always works for me. But please practice first on something you don't mind if it goes wrong. Just in case.

Updating on the Dio I picked up some more king span foam and a surformer to shape it. So this little beast will have a forest to fly over rather than a wood.

Cheers Rob ;)

Where is he? I can't find him!!

About to tap you on the shoulder Nigel.... He has heard about your cooking !

AWESOME work so far...

" Bigfoot is hiding"

Nige,

Eating your Banana... :wicked:

:evil_laugh:

A Bigfoot eating a Banana sure does make them seem less scary. ....... Unless its eating Nigel's Flying Banana..... Don't paint it yellow Nige or you might attract him.

Hi Rob

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but have I got your e-mail address? if not can you send me it please? I think your BM letter box is full? I have some photos to send you of Vulcan XL392. They're not the best in the world but the guy that I got them from was involved in the test flying.

I would not call it hijacking. I love it when threads blow off course. Its more fun to have lots of stuff going on.

PM sent ;)

Well the madness of the Duo continues and it seems the Tiddler is going to be part of a bigger finished model than the Big 'n. (Does that now make the big 'n the tiddler?)

I went down B&Q to pick up some more foam insulation board. I had a bit of Kingspan left but got some more. This stuff is called Celotex.

00804B7A-6650-4266-A28D-E27A4A08A543-635

Its good stuff but terribly messy to work with. It also smells like a fish mongers slab EWWWWW :zombie:

I started to Saw it and peel it as required. The idea is to stack it and taper it off then using the Stanley SurForm I bought which is like a cheese-grater/plainer. Cut it to shape and get some curves in to shape it something like a valley.

At this point yesterday I got that feeling I should have a break and think before going further.

Its fun stuff to saw up this but was worried I was having to much fun cutting it up and have none left.

Its not expensive though at just over a fiver a sheet. :)

Regarding the Big n I am awaiting some punches to arrive to create a few masks and then I can finally finish her off. ;)

Cheers Rob :ike:
