robvulcan Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 Right well as I said this thread is not done with entirely yet. There is the tiddler which is finished but her display base is not. I abandoned this as I ran out of time and had to make do with a Corgi stand for the show. But for the Tiddler I have started to make a dio of the Canadian tundra out of insulation foam board on a wood base with newspaper and PVA glue. That part was actually made for the Precision Ice and Snow review I did last summer and I need to follow that up. This was originally going to be for the snow man I made but I will do something else with that later. So I decided to chop up bits of sponge and I might redo all these as they could be better. But I am trying to make small fir trees. I will paint all this and flock powder it all greens and browns then I will add some Precision Ice and Snow to create a winter enviroment for XM595 to fly low level over. This is what the MSG and Green scheme was for on V bombers As you can see in this image a Vulcan flying low over the snowy forest it blends in perfectly. If you can make your vision blur out you will see it disappears into the forest without detection. High flying enemy fighters would find it very hard to spot. http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae294/goofer33/XM571_35SqnVulcan_zpsc0527aa0.jpg Cheers Rob 1
dadgaddad Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Great photo. You don't even have to blur your vision, just don't look directly at it and it virtually disappears. It reminds me of that photo of the BF109 flying over the desert. Didn't think I would find it so quickly but here it is http://www.tabletop-terrain.com/stu/archives/Bf109AfrikaKorp.jpg 1

The link is dead but the Germans are terrific at camo jobs. Camo fascinates me;)
robvulcan Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 As the sun was so nice this morning I took a quick few snaps outside in natural light to show you the results of my paint experiment I believe its worked out pretty well and I am chuffed with the results. I need to plan what to do next with her. I need some punches to mask off the round radar panels on the fuselage 1 on top 2 on the bottom. I then need to remove the wheels and doors so I can sort out the holes I added to add some gear door struts too. also to make them easier to decal as I need to as the number XM597 to the insides of the rear doors and possibly the smaller ones to the front ones. I will have to check my photos. The Glue and glaze is brilliant for setting the doors wheels etc as it not only dries clear but its also goes like a rubbery jelly. So it has some spring and cushioning but also with care its easy to remove should you need to. But once set grips very solidly. I love the stuff. I recommend you pick some up from deluxe materials. The do some good stuff and their putty is amazing. General Melchett give me the heads up on both these products I really must buy some Gator Glue which he tells me its wonderful too. Then I will need to add the last few stencils to the bottom and then mask the windows off with PVA again so I can give her the final finish. I like the satin look she has but the radome and fin cap need to be returned to matt, Once thats done I can mask them off and spray a final coat of varnish and then I might polish it up to a super flat high shine gloss as per the real thing, But the satin does look nice from the can. The very last job for this build will be to paint up and add with glue and glaze the smaller aerials etc. Right then so its all Vulcan Vulcan Vulcan at the moment I really have too many threads on the go at the moment but as I have finally organized my work space Its nice to keep switching between projects. Hope no one minds. Currently the build list is this. This vulcan Tiddler vulcan and dio Tiddler XL426, Tiddler XA895 Tiddler XA890 Frog Vulcan restoration job Matchbox Jaguar Matchbox Buccaneer Tamiya Spitfire Vulcan B1 Airfix Vulcan Nose Frog Hornet. Whiff Avro Azrael Project and many more on the stash... Yikes I must have really got the modelling bug I have always loved it but Britmodeller is like a drug dealer to a modeller...HEAVEN Cheers Rob 3
general melchett Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Rob, ever thought of doing a Vulcan ?...I know it's a bit off piste for you but..... Looks really good, as pointed out it just need the radome black and fin cap matting , the tan circular plate and a few aerials fitted and she's good to go, (but at least you can do these at your leisure !!)....though I know you enjoy the stress.... Right I'm off to finish my camo Valiant B(K)1 ready in time for Milton Keynes.........maybe ! 2

Me and Radleigh have had a few problems with the email /PM recently Cheers Rob 1

I've heard they are quite fun to build but the fit can be a bit of a pig if you aren't lucky. 1
dadgaddad Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 You've got me thinking maybe I should try my hand at one. EDSG over Sky, folded wings. Sounds good.
robvulcan Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 You've got me thinking maybe I should try my hand at one. EDSG over Sky, folded wings. Sounds good. Which one is that ?... Sounds like something from the Royal Navy. Did I miss something... A sea Vulcan now that would be something odd ! Ooh that winter scene is a great idea! Thanks. Should be pretty too when its done. I shall have to go get some soil and put it in the micro wave again. 1
Val Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 God I love the Vulcan so much! Been greatly inspired by your builds of this iconic aircraft, and my Dragon B.2 has been bumped up to next on the build list when I've finished the mustang off. They had the Dragon kit on sale at Hannants for £10, not sure if it still is or not? Great price considering how much they normally cost, although I'd say that's about the right price for this kit. I'll get a (probably quite slow, tedious and disastrous) build thread up soonish, any tips will be welcome! Val

Glad to help with anything if I can. I am sure this build and the build thread I did for the 1/200th B1 xa900 and B1a xh498 should help you. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234936632-1st-one-finished-dragon-vulcan-b1a-2-b1-big-surgery-for-3-small-kits/ I will actually be revisiting this thread soon as I have a few more B1s to make. Silver kinked wing, Silver straight wing, B1 in Flash white with pale roundels Which 2 carried as far as I know rather than the normal full shade roundels. And probs a few more cause I am totally hooked on the damn things... Wish they were cheaper but they are not so... More fool me I guess 1
robvulcan Posted April 11, 2014 Author Posted April 11, 2014 Thanks buddy, I'll have a good look at that Cool. Some of the photos might be missing. I had a steep learning curve with photobucket NEVER MOVE YOUR PHTOS TO ANOTHER FOLDER! I did and lost everything. I restored the photos to the original location and for the most part the photos are there but some are missing so If you should hit on something that interests you or would be of help let me know and I will go back and re do the photos for you if it will help. Cheers Rob 1
robvulcan Posted April 13, 2014 Author Posted April 13, 2014 Well today I have been sorting the final finish on the tiddler by giving her some klear, then cidadel nuln oil wash applied to the panel lines sparingly and the excess removed. Then a coat of hu satin varnish and a polish up to a gloss. Photos of that later. But today I have also been working on the Canadian Tundra Dio for her to fly over. Very crude this and started in desperation for the show but not finished in time hence her hiding at the back of the big 'n on the corgi stand in a temporary matt finish. I cut some bits of sponge and stuck them on to my base with PVA. Then I sprayed them in humbrol 163 from the can. when dry I will add some pva and real soil around them. The soil dug from the garden sieved and microwaved to kill any bugs etc. After the dirt is down its time to get to the fun part using some Precision Ice and Snow Cheers Rob 2
robvulcan Posted April 13, 2014 Author Posted April 13, 2014 So here is my impromptu garden modeling table at the bottom of the garden which we are having extensively remodelled at the moment. decking sheds the lot. Some quick shots of the tiddler in here near finished state, Panel lines picked out (don't normally bother but it adds something in this scale but I have kept it very subtle) Here is her little cute Blue Steel Missile Onto the forest Real soil and it still looks like bits of sponge haha. The brass wire is coat hanger wire. This is temporary till I can find something more suitable. Not the final position either. Just a quick look at whats going on. Cheers Rob 4
Martian Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 I think the diorama has great potential. To add a bit of humour, how about adding a 1/200 scale Bigfoot running from the monster overhead? Martin 2
robvulcan Posted April 13, 2014 Author Posted April 13, 2014 I think the diorama has great potential. To add a bit of humour, how about adding a 1/200 scale Bigfoot running from the monster overhead? Martin HAHAHA If I can find a way to do that I will. That would be most excellent. Perhaps a Z gauge railway person might do the job ! lol. Your full of great ideas Martin Right I have been getting all sorts of funny looks off the neighbours today. Me holding little aeroplanes up to the sky to see how they are looking, My fingers in a bowl of microwaved soil, Armed with PVA glue a brush and a MASSIVE BAG OF WHITE POWDER ON THE TABLE !!! I hear the Police helicopter coming.... Oh and to top it off Hairspray and 3M spray... So here we have it. Forest, Hair spray, 3M Photomount, plus Precision Ice and Snow kit with its own medical grade sieve. Away we go. This does look greedy to the casual nosey neighbour . It sieves much better if its half full. Plenty of hairspray and then 1 coat is sieved on. 2 more coats with hairspray (removing and reusing excess in between by tapping off and reloading the sieve and then 2 coats with 3m for a finer top layer. I did this in a rush to test the theory. If I had taken more time with the sponge this would work better. But we are getting uber close here and the point of this is to have tiny trees for the Vulcan to fly over. But later on she will need a bigger Dio me thinks. With a fine lycra wires to sit her on or something. Bigfoot is hiding.... Cheers Rob 9
David Womby Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 >Bigfoot is hiding.... > Yeah, Rob. Where have I heard that one before. Great diorama. David 1
