PlaStix
This is my finished Airfix 1/72 MkIa Spitfire - the new tool version. I really enjoyed building it. It's the first plane I've built in many, many years so it was a bit of a learning experience. It's all brush painted apart from the final application of matt varnish which was from a rattle can. I tried some pre-shading, which I think worked, and this is my first attempt at weathering. The build can be found here. The first photos are ones I took after deciding it was finished and in proper daylight rather than electric light:Next I decided to make a little display base for it on some scrap MDF I had:Which I then tried some close-ups of with the sun at quite a low angle:.....and a couple without the sun:Well that's it for this one. Comments and suggestions welcome.Next off I'm going to do another Spitfire for the 'Less than a tenner' group build. In fact I may even be making two.Kind regards,Stix Edited February 21, 2014 by PlaStix

Dave N
"first plane in many, many years" would never guess that looking at the finished model....the paintwork and finish look really good, and the dropped elevators are a nice touch. Looks great parked on the grass....

Ray S
Stix, great job there! The build log was inspirational too. I always brush paint my kits and had often wondered whether pre-shading was possible that way or not, and it looks as though it is! I will try that on my next aircraft attempt. You have ended up with a cracking model there, and the base and low sun set it off wonderfully. All the best, Ray

PlaStix
Hi theanorak, Stew, batcode, James, Dave, Wolwe, MPaul, Ray, Steve, Airledge, blueliner and Iain, Thank you all for your kind comments. I have to say when I decided to do a WiP with the Airfix Mk1a Spitfire I really thought I might be on my own as it had been made so many times before but, I guess, everyone does it in their own way which makes all the threads so interesting. Thank you all again, Kind regards, Stix

PlaStix
Thats lovely, whats the product code for this new tool Spit? Hi MPaul, Sorry - meant to say before - the product code for this MkIa kit is A01071A. You can also get a kit from which you can build either a MkI or MkIIa version, the product code of which is A02010 - it's basically the same kit with extra optional parts. Andy Mac
Great build Stix, she looks gorgeous, especially considering she's 1/72nd. It's hard to believe that paintwork is by the hairy stick.
Smudge
I had missed your WIP, so checked it out via your 'link' at the top. Thanks for that, as it was an interesting build. Nice work in the cockpit, I particularly liked your homemade seat belts, with the pin holes. I shall have to try that. And I think you just used a 'square' of tape for the buckles? very effective. Nice Build.

Nice Build. Hi chockhead, Thank you for you comments. Yeah the seat belts looked better than I expected - the dark wash afterwards helped as well - and yes just tape for the buckle, pushed into in the middle to give it a rough shape. PlaStix
Just realised I didn't include a photo of the completed underside:Also a few of the photos I took at the same time turned out a little grainy so I thought I would play around and make them black and white:Thank you for looking.Kind regards,Stix Edited February 23, 2014 by PlaStix
