1/72 A2Zee Early Lightning Conversion set for Airfix!

Over £25 for an F.1 from the Airfix F.2a, I can wait and see if someone does an OOB kit at those prices

To be honest I think that's pretty reasonable compared to most 48th scale releases these days - not to mention many 72nd ones - if you had to buy the Trumpy abortion new it's £21!! - and we're supporting two British companies by buying their products. And I have no doubt that we'll still have better looking early Frightnings than a Trumpton one with any amount of work & bits thrown at it will (don't forget your anhedral!!)

And life's too short anyway, I've just had the postie deliver 4 MA & Xtradecal Lightning sheets with early jets on them & I already 'need' more than the two conversions I've ordered from Ali - I certainly don't have time left to fight with Truumpy's 'effort' on multiple occasions!!

Well I certainly only plan on doing it once  that will definitely be enough. While an early Lightning is nice, I'm more excited by the Sword twin seaters and the Airfix F.6 anyway

I'm certainly glad I didn't pay 21 squids for it, only the postage on a trade for a kit I had in the stash.

As you say, lifes too short, especially for counting rivets and suchlike

I'm looking forward to seeing your result, & it's all supposed to be just for fun isn't it??!! :D

It will be my next Lightning once I've finished the Matchbox T55 to T4 kitbash. Round 6 of fill and sand this weekend

The swap was extremely amicable I'm pleased to say

I thought that you could make an F3 from the conversion set and an F2a kit.

I think the F1A and F2 have the short cable ducts and Firestreak missiles in the F2A kit. The F3 has the long cable ducts and Red Top missiles from the F6 kit.

The F1 has no cable ducts so it doesn't matter which kit you use.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Golden Age! I'm tellin' ya! :D

Expensive age I'm telling ya! I've just been looking through all my 'in stock' Lightning decal sheets after the delivery from Mr. Hannant earlier on, & I reckon I can just about get away with another six conversion sets....(& of course the base kits to go with them!!) :undecided::blink:

At least it's hopefully doing Ali's pension fund some good...!!

"Early Lightning conversion for F.1 and F.3 for F.2A Airfix kit

This set contains new upper wing surfaces, smaller belly tank and tail fin for the F.1 and F.3 versions."

Not being a Lightning guru & not having found the answer in this thread so far, am I right in thinking that for a F.3 one simply retains the kit fin but for an F.1 one will need to use the A2Zee kit fin? Just trying to figure out how many Airfix Lightnings & conversions I'll be needing. :)

I think you'd need to wait for the F.6 kit, as the F.3 had the longer cable ducts, the later fin, and the small belly tank.

Steve, you are quite right, the F2A had the larger fin of the F3 and F6 so all you have to do to make an F3 is buy the conversion set but use the kit fin and make the extended cable ducts which should be easy enough. For the F1/1A, F2, T4 (if we get another conversion) go with the A2Zee fin and remove the cable ducts for the F1 only. Also remember that the F3 had similar vents and equipment air intakes as the F2A and F6 but the F1/F1A and F2? had a different arrangement so you'll have to remove the lumps and bumps of the kit and make your own NACA ducts etc.

As the Airfix F2A is retailing a few quid cheaper than the list price announced for the Airfix F6 when it comes out (and the F2A will be of limited popularity compared to the F6 so the price might start to be discounted even further) I'd go for the F2A kit as the basis for future conversions to the small bellied versions and make the cable ducts.

So what do I do with my stash of MatchFix F1a's, F3s T55s and assorted conversions?

I had similar thoughts when Airfix announced the F.2a in Dec. 2012: only 10 days before I had found a shop with several Matchbox F.6 kits and had bought them all together with an Aeroclub T.5 conversion.

I'll have to find a use for these, at least they came cheap
