Speedman
Build 9 Su-22? Sorry Dragon, you got it wrong! Because the markings supplied are only for a Russian Fitter, Su-17M4 is the correct designation, Su-22 is only used for export versions. Now that's cleared up... ;)This looks to be a very nice little kit and I'm looking forward to building it. It'll be built OOB except for the wing/wing glove joint which will need some work. Price: 99p eBay. The decals have yellowed a little and are currently Blu Tacked to my window...

Speedman
I've added some nose weight today, there will be some more going in the nose once I've glued the fuselage together. I've painted the pilot and pit as well.
Jockster
With all the liquid gravity you've been using, be careful you don't start a mini black hole in the old man-cave!
Speedman
Suddenly, a plane! It kind of fell together today, tomorrow I start working on those nasty wing glove gaps.
Speedman
Well, the wing glove gaps are gone! I ditched the kit chaff/flare dispensers as they were too think and incorrectly shaped and made some replacements out of card. I also had to replace the nose gear door as they were a scale 8" thick! Various other things like a adding pylons etc. have been done as well.
mrvr6
thats a mean looking aircraft!
Speedman
I've replace the pitot tubes with wire I turned to a fine point, much better than the oversized rods that came with the kit. Primed, pre-shaded and undersides sprayed blue! I've also made up two extra drop tanks I had in my spares box from an eBay purchase that arrived with 90% of the kit missing off the sprue! I got a refund for it and ended up paying £4.49 less for this one a few weeks later, so it worked out nicely in the end
Speedman
I masked of the undersides last night ready for the first stages of camo, I'll get to try out my Polly Scale Warpac Grey Green at last
Dazzio
I'm really liking this build (and the Flogger), I've still got my Revell Flogger to finish... Anyhow I have always kept away from the Dragon Su-22's as I've read they where shockingly bad. This build hasn't shown me anything that would warrant that tho. Keeping an eye on this one, looking forward to the camo scheme Kind Regards Dazz
Speedman
Well so far, apart from replacing the pitots and the nose gear doors, I've not had any real headaches. If I had tried to keep the "swing wing" working it would have been another matter as the wings would have been drooping ridiculously low to the ground when forward and not much better swept! I've been a busy little bee and got three of the four colours on already! The Warpac Grey Green went on beautifully, first time I've sprayed Polly Scale and I really like it. I picked it up in Hannants special offers section for 50p, I knew it would come in handy at some point.
Speedman
Forth and final colour done. Some post-shading next then a few coats of Clear before the decals.
Speedman
The decals are on, I'm a little disappointed as they are out of register but with no replacements available I'm stuck with them. I've already given it a few coats of Clear and will be attacking it with my Pitt pens next.
Neal
That's looking ace, I'm very impressed with te paint job you've done. The masking would drive me to distraction but the white tac & maskol has worked really well
Speedman
Cheers The hard part is peeling it all off, because it's layered it tends to want to come off all in one. It was a little tricky with this one as there are so many little parts sticking out. I fitted the undercarriage last night and painted most of the little details that were left to do. I'm hoping to get this one finished today.
Dazzio
That's looking really good Speedman. I might just to treat myself to one. . It's a shame about the decals tho, I know Mark1 do the soviet style stars, but the bort numbers I don't think so. Don't think I've ever come across Either a MiG-27/Su-17 decals now I think of it... hhmm. Really cool model tho! Kind Regards Dazz
Speedman
I looked on Hannants for the Mark 1 red stars, they have some, but none have the double border.
Dazzio
Now that I think about it, I might have some stars from a Minicraft Foxbat if they are any good? Kind Regards Dazz
Speedman
Thanks for the offer but I've just compared the Su-17 to the MiG-25 I finished a few weeks ago and the Foxbat's stars are at least twice as big! Big ol' bird that Foxbat Except for removing the canopy masking I've finished this and the MiG-27, I should have some photos up tomorrow.
Dazzio
What about an Su-25?? I've got aftermarket decals for mine. Plus I might have some with the MiG-21's from Eduard. I'm at work now so it's kinda hard to remember what I've got. Looking forward to the un-masking Kind Regards Dazz
Speedman
I've got a Su-25 tucked away in the stash, but to be honest I'm calling this one done. Thanks again for the offer but even if I applied new stars the rest of the decals are out of register anyway. This kit and the Flogger serve to remind us 1/144 modellers how far the quality of kits have come with the likes of Revell, Eduard and the modern Dragon kits. PlaStix
Excellent job!! You've made it look much bigger than 1/144. I don't know how you do such excellent work in such a small scale.
