TinHead
Absolutely cracking photos! I don't live too far from Shildon, but sadly I didn't have the time to get down and see these beautiful engines before they were seperated for the last time, so thanks for posting these images! bentwaters81tfw
SNG was due on the North Norfolk Railway this weekend. After years of trying, and much planning in advance, Network Rail, bless them, suddenly announced it was 'too heavy' for the bridges at Wroxham? so it had to be cancelled. The loco weighs 103 tons on 6 axles, and the tender 65 tons on 4 axles. Until a few years ago, oil trains ran from N Walsham, hauled by class 37s, which weigh 103 tons on 6 axles, and a train of fully laden bogie tanks of about 100 tons each on 4 axles . Go figure. Guess where I'm not going this weekend!
PilotOfficer
Wouldn't it be nice to do the same sort of thing with Duchess of Hamilton, Duchess of Sutherland and City of Birmingham ? Mr Gresley's Streaks are wonderful, but Mr Stanier's Big Lizzies would be utterly spectacular! The 'Big Lizzies'? Forget 'em! Now a reunion of all eight of Mr Collett's lovely Castles, that would be worth seeing - or possibly all three Kings ... (OK, OK - I'm a GWR fan. While I do have a fondness for Gresley Pacifics, Brunswick green and copper-capped chimneys are the way to go).
Mal
SNG was due on the North Norfolk Railway this weekend. After years of trying, and much planning in advance, Network Rail, bless them, suddenly announced it was 'too heavy' for the bridges at Wroxham? so it had to be cancelled. Guess where I'm not going this weekend! Steam engines cause a lot more damage to track due to the “Hammer blow effect” than a comparable diesel or electric locomotive,(they are also more prone to hunting).I would suggest this is the reason for the restriction more than the axle loadings. The minimisation of the effects of hammer blow were one of the major challenges in steam locomotive design, not only does it cause damage to the track it also causes damage through stress to the locomotive frames it also has an apprecable effect on adhesion. I think it is fair to say that the Duchesses being four cylinder were a more sure footed locomotive than the three cylinder A4's. A final point the axle loading on steam locomotive varies across the axles the majority of the weight is carried (for traction) on the driving wheels. I don't have to hand a weight diagram for an A4 but for a Britannia it's Bogie 8.5 ton Driving 20 ton Trailing 16 ton You can see quite a variation! These are app.having being taken from the figures of four class members. Malcolm Edited March 9, 2014 by Mal
bentwaters81tfw
Thanks Mal, I guessed there was a variation, They run Britannias over that line with no problems.

Head in the clouds.
Lovely photos. we had a Festival of Speed in Grantham whereby the Mallard and a Deltic were present outside our station along with an exibition of the record breaking run of Mallard, also, you were allowed to stand on the footplate for which a 1 1/2 hour queue had to be negotiated, but it was worth it. The sun was out and to see the old girl in the sunshine was magnificant. I got it but my young son did not . 2500 people were expected, over 10.000 turned up over the two day event. There was a rumour they may try something similar in the future, if so i will post it. Gary.

Even more strange as they had Tornado up there not so long back, which I believe is slightly heavier.
