exdraken
http://www.wolfpack-d.com/catalog/htm/wp48177.html looks interesting, especially the thrust vectoring nozzles! would this for a perfect basis for a sought after Su-30 MKI / MKM / MKA and the new Russian Air Force Su-30SM? together with an Academy 2 seater this should work out quite well, no? input please! Flankerman
I'm not sure I agree with Wolfpack on the TVC nozzles - it looks like they are standard nozzles that can be fitted 'drooped'. This is a 'standard' nozzle..... This is what the TVC nozzle should look like...... Note the row of tiny holes on the curved lobsterback section - and the 'petals' and silver ring on the section forward of it Wolfpacks nozzles appear to have a smooth section forward of the nozzl;e - and no lobsterback with holes. I suspect they have worked from photos of the Su-37 when it lost its TVC nozzles and reverted to being a Su-35. Just my twopenn'orth..... Marlin
That's a shame. I was hoping for to use this set to build an Algerian Su-30 MKA. /Bosse
exdraken
hi Ken, thanks for the pictures! interesting! could it be that Windmark models (who did the resin conversion) modeled this nozzle? found here: http://www.google.com/imgres?start=185&sa=X&espvd=210&es_sm=93&biw=1920&bih=936&tbm=isch&tbnid=n_tRtH3Xp3EV6M%3A&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.keypublishing.com%2Fshowthread.php%3F94945-Variable-jet-nozzles&docid=wHANL9beVVBP0M&imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fmaks.sukhoi.ru%2Fmedia%2Fphoto%2Fmaks2007%2Fmaks2007d1212.jpg&w=1024&h=768&ei=gEwCU_b9CeiGywOy8YGADg&zoom=1&ved=0CDgQhBwwETjIAQ&iact=rc&dur=120&page=6&ndsp=40 http://maks.sukhoi.ru/media/photo/maks2007/maks2007d1211.jpg this nozzle is totally new to me! this link says: it is the MMPP Salut Al-31FN-M(3?) 3D TVC nozzle any more information available? will see how to do these nozzles in the end... the SOL ones are not too promising either
Flankerman
Exdraken.... Those nozzles are a one-off 3D design from rival engine maker Salut - they have never seen operational use AFAIK. Here's my photo of it from the 2005 MAKS show - when it was fitted to the port side only of the LII Su-27LL... Here's another view - compare it to the 'standard' AL-31 engine in the starboard side..... I can't prove it, but I suspect that Wolfpack have found a photo of Su-37 Bort 711 when the TVC nozzles were removed and replaced by 'standard' non-TVC nozzles- and based their resin nozzles on those. Shame really - as a set of correct TVC nozzles would be useful to 1/48 scale modellers. I made my own in 1/72 scale........ Here's a better set I made for my Su-35S..... (although the holes are too big...) Ken
Wee Beastie
Interesting thread, and useful info guys. I've got the Wolfpack set for my Flanker too. Just trying to decide which of my stash to start next http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234955554-what-next/
exdraken
so, took out the camera and some inspiration comparison between SOL conversion's nozzles in cream coloured resin and the new Wolfpack-d/ Windmark grey coloured ones: to me, the no so Al-31 trained one, both of them do not really depict what Ken showed above..... kind of sad, no? what stands out as a difference is the size of the oft feathers, Wolfpack ones being slightly longer also. SOL seems to have depicted the nozzle in open, full afterburner position (not totally open), as opposed to Wolfpack/ Windmark that depict it in fully open . i.e. on the ground position.... Ken " Flankerman" - I stand corrected! years ago, I modified Dream Model's fantastic PE nozzles for the then new Trumpeter J-10 fighter. (mainly I had to reduce the diameter, as the J-10 seems to be to a true 1/48 whereas the flanker seems to be smaller... never mind :~) I even broke it of, f to show it better so now I have to think of a way on how to correct at least one of the Resin nozzles.... Ken, you already provided valuable input! --> maybe cutting along along the black line here?: and using the shroud for the ring in between. will have to think about it! a pity it does not work out of the conversion box! but thats what modeling is all about, no? cheers, Werner
