A good question to ask but difficult to answer,as apart from the Ardennes (which has been covered) and Kursk,I can,t think of any other action that

would possibly fill a movie script. Alamein perhaps as part of the overall story.personally I would love to see a good film made about the ordinary

British soldiers lot during WW1 the look and feel was achieved in war horse but a strong story along the lines of saving private Ryan along side this

would be great throw in Cambrai and it falls into this category. The one story that I think would be a great movie would centre around the war of 1812

when the British sent an expedition and torched the white house in Washington with Sean Bean reprising Major Sharpe perhaps!

Can you imagine pitching that one to US studio bosses?!

What about something around the the battle for Berlin? I can't think if a film that's involved in that area of the war...Downfall!!! 😣 Not the Hitler side of it but the fight for survival by the remains of the German army?

Has anyone read 'The Forgotten Soldier' by Guy Sajer? There's another option!

The WW I Ideas would have legs right now... All Quiet on the Western Front is still a supreme film on the War.

The torching of the White House needs to be done especially after that ridiculous Mel Gibson effort Patriot.

I shall get The Forgotten Soldier.

I'd like a good Falklands movie, I'd also like a good Foreign Legion movie. Also a good SAS Movie covering the foundation with Stirling and Mayne.

Search out, 'With Our Backs to Berlin' by Tony le Tissier

(Governor of Spandau prison 81 - 87)

A collection of tales from German soldiers in retreat.

Some fascinating tales. Heroism and stupidity.

One that would make a good film....

An American unit was halted at the Czech border 26/4/45

With German help! They managed to 'liberate'

almost 400 Lippizaner horses from a stud farm inside Russian territory.

This book is on Amazon & ebay. You will not be disappointed.

Not many tanks but the siege of Kohima would make a great movie, relentless action & not a Yank in sight!

Also just finished reading 1918, A Very British Victory. A great book with a lot of scope for some Mk IV & Mk V scenes, plus the Whippet tank Musical Box's exploits in support of the Australians.

In the second war Alamein would be good, as mentioned. Or follow a platoon of Yeomanry Shermans from D Day onwards. I think half the trouble is that we don't blow our own trumpets anymore.

The biggest trouble with making a movie is being assured of box office receipts...I agree about blowing our own trumpet - look at the post war Brit film industry, even during WW2 but now the American market has to be considered.

Take Memphis Belle - Putnam wanted to make a film on the Lancaster Bomber Crews....he couldn't get funding as it didn't concern Americans or American actors...thus Memphis Belle was made.

There is so much that should be made from the Brit history side of things...hey ho...we need a few rich film makers who will take a risk and then we may end up with a movie like Zulu, A Bridge Too Far...

I'll get the Backs to Berlin book thanks.

A film about the use of the first tanks in WW1 eg the Battle of Cambrai . No need for false heroics they were brave enough.

The Battle of Cambrai was not the first time tanks were used on the battlefield, but it was the first time that they were used in battle tactically (in much a similar way they are used now). My great grandfather was killed in the battle of Cambrai (not in a tank) and his name is on the Louvral memorial.

You might like to hunt down the movie They Were Not Divided (1950) which is about the Welsh Guards in NW Europe. Loads of excellent footage of the British Army of the day.

I just ordered the DVD of They Were Not Divided...I haven't seen it but anything directed by Terence Young is good...Dr.No, From Russia with Love and Thunderball.

It's a reasonable movie for the time it was made. What is good is all the vehicles and the obvious and real people who played in the movie, including RSM Britain, who plays his part to the "T". The only better impression I have ever seen of an RSM was in the Guns at Batasi (1964) where Richard Attendborough did a grand turn. Both brought back fond memories of RSMs I've known. Indeed, I'd highly recommend Guns at Batasi as a very good portrayal of post-colonial Africa.
