Hi there,

Does anyone know if you can still build a standard S-3A/B Viking from the Limted Edition US-3A COD re-issue of the Hasegawa kit. I can get the COD Variant for considerably less than the S-3A/B ASW variant but I do not know if it includes the sonobuoy decking etc….Anyone know ?

Thanks in advance

Mark

Hi Mark,

You probably could, I've not owned the kit and sprue shots/reviews seem to be near impossible to find. I wouldn't be surprised if Hasegawa just tooled a new sprue with the blank sonobouy panel to go along with the massive cargo pods. Not much help, I know!

This might be, try http://www.kingkit.co.uk/product_detail.php?prodID=5347 they have a fair amount of S-3A/B kits at quite a decent price. Customer service is very good and old fashioned, they might be able to help you out if you give them a call...

That's true. it was the S-3A kit with an extra sprue with the US-3 parts (blank sonobuoy bay cover and cargo pods).

I only hope I remember it correctly (built it just over 20 years ago...)

That is a good price from kingkit for the S-3.

Mark if you can get hold of an Airfix S-3 I actually liked that more than the Hasegawa kit to build.

I've just looked at the sprue maps from this build

Sonobouy bay is on same sprue as port fuselage.

MAD is same sprue as stbd fuselage.

Fuel tanks and bombs on same sprue as stabs and flaps.

As others are suggesting, I'd concur that COD parts will be a new sprue

I am at work so can't check, but from memory when I built the Hasegawa US-3A kit, I believe the wings didn't have the wingtip pods on them so you might have to scratchbuild them.

Can't believe that I forgot about it!!!

You are absolutely correct, the wings had been retooled and no longer had the wingtip pods. :(

I hope these US-3 pics prove useful. They were taken in 1980 on Diego Garcia, BIOT. I used b&w film (more affordable at the time), but she was oa white at the time.

Canopy framing was black and IIRC the frangible fiberglass panels over where the aft seats would normally be were a slightly greenish off-white.

Notice the wingtips as discussed above:

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your very useful inputs.....they helped steer me away from making a mistake and buying the US-3A boxing and I have since picked up a cheap S-3B for my project via another great member of the BM community. That said, I find the US-3A shots in the ladt post fascinating.......the crewman carrying the mail bags etc, so I may be inspired to do a US-3A some day after all !.

Again, many thanks

Mark

All the hasegawa S-3 kits I have seen have the little oval window in the side between the cockpit glazing and the square window.

You need to fill this as only the COD used it.
