Heinkel He 100, GP+AI, HIPM, 1/48

Recommended Posts

Some things take time, some kits too! Don`t know how long this kit was waiting beneath my stash pile?!

;)

The Heinkel He 100 is in fact a tremendous and a pretty aircraft. Hope one of the new or old Hightech modelling brands will release this kit sometimes in better quality!

At very first let me say, this kit is mainly a "Do it yourself" kit and you will need a lot of patience and endurance. :)

I hope the result will deserves the effort.

Cockpit01He100.jpg

The cockpit, built out of the box, lacks a lot of details and is in some cases truly wrong. I`ve found two pictures of the original cockpit. It is possible, that this two pictures represents close up pictures of the russian export aircraft. The original presumption, that the He 100 cockpit had similarities with the one of the He 112 is completly wrong.

Cockpit02He100.jpg

The cockpit is painted with RLM 02. I`ve used Acrylics from JPS Colours. Sadly this brand is no longer available as I`ve heard!

Fuselage01He100.jpg

The entire kit is completly rescribed and I`ve engraved new rivets too. Therefore I`ve used a tool called Rosie the Riveter.

http://www.victorymodels.com/petr-dousek-rosie-the-riveter-riveting-tool-0-75mm-1-32-1-48-double-pdr04d.html

Please have in mind, the fuselage of this kit is about 1 mm too narrow. I clued a matching sprue between both fuselage halfs.

Fuselage02He100.jpg

The upper and lower exhaust fairings are scratch built too. The exhaust pipes are the origin Tamiya Bf 109 E pipes.

Fuselage03He100.jpg

Fuselage04He100.jpg

Both wingtip position lights are not provided.

Fuselage05He100.jpg

As you can see, I`ve scratch built a new airintake on the nose front and a new oil cooler. In fact the most, if not the complete small parts have to be scratch built by yourself.

Lower side is done.

To represent the slightly heated surface of the cooling panels I painted Airframe Aluminium at first. High diluted Hot Metal Blue, - Violet and Pale Burnt Metal was irregular sprayed over it.

LowerSide01.jpg

Several shades of different high lighted RLM 65 from JPS was then sprayed over the rest of the lower surface.

LowerSide02.jpg

The weathering was done with Dark Nato Wash and Dark Brown Wash from AK Interactive.

Meanwhile I have built some accessories for a final presentation.

The prop has thinned blades and is painted with RLM 71 from JPS.

This little towing cart is called Heuschrecke (grashopper) and was developed by Maschinenfabrik G. Müller; Berlin 1939. Two different classes existed, one with 500 kg and the other one with 1000 kg tail wheel pressure.

Only two pictures exist in the famous but out of print book "Aircraft type book" from Helmut Schneider. ( Handbook of German Aircraft and Maintenance Industrie Reprint from 1939/40)

In addition I have built two wheel chocks and painted the extinguisher from Tamiya.

This is great work Dirk, is the Heuschrecke a kit item or scratch built?

Hi Neil,

the Heuschrecke is scratch built. Would be a great thing if they would produce a kit.

As I wrote above I found two photos. But there are dimensions and so I could estimate the size.

Please don`t be too precise with my lil modell.

Thx

Hi Dirk

very interesting...I was 'led astray' and bough one of these a couple of months back.

The reviews I read were basically positive, a good limited run kit of an unusual subject.

What reference says the fuselage is too narrow by 1mm? And does this not mean adjusting the clear parts?

I note in this build

http://modelingmadness.com/review/axis/luft/privathe100d.htm

I glued the cockpit assembly, closed the fuselage halves. And then I had my first REAL experience with a short run kit: there was a big gap! But I was happy the gap was there: the canopy fitted thanks to it!

Is this the reason for the 1mm strip?

I presume you mean there are two cockpit photos in the book you mention?

Having got the kit out I can see you added a seat supports and a load of sidewall detail, and a new floor?

for those interested, there are pics of a stock kit cockpit here

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/2/t/113241.aspx

Propeller jig mentioned in FSM build

http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2003/12/stuff_eng_tech_propeller_jig.htm

The kit instrument panel is photo etch, did you use that?

The cooling panels are interesting as well, no mention of those in the painting guide!

This has been a very informative build so far, look forward to the finished model

cheers

Troy

PS - another interesting thread here, well worth a read.

Hi Troy,

yep that`s the reason. The fuselage is too small in direct comparison with the clear parts. :/

I`ve found those two pictures of the Heinkel 100 cockpit.

But this two photos are not shown in my book recommendation.

Here they are:

Yes I did so! It has nice details and matches the original instrument board.

Thx for your interest.

Some really great work going on here, the scratch built trailer is incredible. I really like the subtle weathering you have applied and those paint colours look nice too, some manufacture's RLM 65 looks too blue to me but that looks good.

The final steps of my Heinkel kit are right now done.

For standart german Splinter Camo I`ve used RLM 70 from JPS (the darker colour) and RLM 70 from Aeromaster (the lighter colour)

The Blackgreen from Aeromaster Acrylics has the right complexion and looks far better than any RLM 71 colour from other brands.

He100Finish06.jpg

He100Finish07.jpg

Fuel stains are painted with AK Interactive. A nice product, well prepared and easy to use.

He100Finish08.jpg

He100Finish09.jpg

I prefer to use Citadel Washings for painting the position lights

He100Finish03.jpg

He100Finish02.jpg

The main canopy is vacu formed as the original part is not realy useable.

He100Finish04.jpg

He100Finish05.jpg

As an little splash of colour I scratch built for both elevator typical small rudder locks of Luftwaffe aircrafts.

Fantastic work - may I ask what tool you used to rescribe the model?

I`ve used a tool called Rosie the riveter

http://www.victorymo...ble-pdr04d.html

and the Tamiya scribing tool

you will find additional information about this tool here:

http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/16431-trumpeter-scriber-and-riveter/

On the 10th picture the second from left tool.
