SaintsPhil
Bosse, It's a tough one to call with the colour, I thought I had it spot on, but now I've weathered and varnished it's gone quite dark! Are going to gloss before decals? If so I suggest glossing those to see how they react first Phil
Marlin
Thanks Gents. Beige it is then. Glossing, that's not a bad idea. I'll do that when I get home from work. /Bosse
Tom Cooper
Ouch, Phil... can you add some 'sand-weathering'...?
SaintsPhil
I plan to add some sand weathering powder over the top! It seems a bit if a lottery what the various varnish coats do to the paints! Mind you I'm looking at it not under 'real' light...
Marlin
Hi. My MiG-factory is working at speed now that I've got the right colours. The Bis is almost finished for painting. I've still got a few bits left to glue on. And I've got the putty, sand & polish routine to do on the nosesection. I got the wings on better on the Bis than the MF. And the MF has got the first layer of "Beige". Both together. To be continued... /Bosse
SaintsPhil
Bet it feels good to finally get some paint on?! Did you gloss the beige to test or just go for it?
Marlin
Thanks Phil It feel real good to be able to paint. I don't think I've waited this long before. And I have to say I was so eager that I forgot to test to gloss the beige before I started. If it darkens we can always call it weathering... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi. Something is wrong with my bottle of BS298. It's supposed to be Olive drab, but it's more a metallic green. And it dosen't stick to the surface. (sorry no pics.) I painted over it with another green and when that had dried I could lift both layer of the surface. I'm too tired to fix this now. But on the good side my wife got me a great birthday dinner today which we ended with some wine, cheese and cracker on balcony before it got too cold to sit outside. Now it's time for bed. I'll deal with the MiG's after the weekend. To be continued.... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi. A quick update on the paint problems. Ville from HPNS is sending me a new bottle of BS298. The Egyptian MF will be on hold until that arrives, but I can work on the Syrian Bis until it arrives. Great service from Hobby Paint n' Stuff. /Bosse
Marlin
Hi. I've been having trouble finding some time to do some modeling lately. I'm very busy at work at the moment, and this time of the year we spend our weekends at the summer cottage. So there isn't much time over for model building. But this easter holiday my cable sat box broke down and now I've got no tv to distract me when I come home from work. So tonight I've started to paint the Syrian Bis. I've managed two coat of beige so far tonight. I'll try and paint a third coat later tonight. Unfortuately I don't think I'll be able to finish the Egyptian MF before the may 4th deadline. I've not yet received the substitute bottle of AKAN from Helsinki. So I'll concentrate on the Syrian Bis instead. So my MiG's are still alive, but my buildtime is rather scares at the moment. To be continued... /Bosse
SaintsPhil
Coming on nicely Bosse, it's times like this that make you regret doing 2 at once! I very nearly started a second....
Marlin
Thanks Phil. Yes I know. I'm always too optimistic when it comes to time managment /Bosse
Tom Cooper
Sorry to hear you might not manage it on time for the deadline, Bosse. Anyway, on time or not: in your place I would not let these two beauties incomplete. Simply enjoy completing them, whenever you find time - and then let us know about their looks.
Marlin
Thanks Tom. You don't have to worry. I will not leave them incomplete. I've just heard from Ville of HPNS who sells AKAN paints in Helsinki that my replacement colour will be shipped today. So there's still a wee bit of hope left that I'll be able to finish both in time. I'll see what I can do about my time management. And as for building Arab MiG's, I'm hooked. I've got another MF, perhaps Iraqi coming up. And I'm also planing a Syrian R during the summer. Middle Eastern jets is what I like to build. My IDF collection is now around 50 different F-4,-15,-16, A-4's and Mirages and others. But I have only built one EAF MiG-21F-13 an EAF Su-7, and a Iraqi Su-25, so I have a huge gap to fill in that category. /Bosse
Tom Cooper
...and there are endlessly many potential topics waiting to be done. ;-)
Marlin
Quite so Tom, quite so. All it takes is time and perhaps some more money. /Bosse
Tom Cooper
We'll see to make some where you can use all of your stock of recently purchased colours, Bosse.
Marlin
That's right Tom. Lot's of new little bottles that will be used for some nice desert camouflaged schemes. I've just had the urge to turn one of my GWH MiG-29's into a Sudanese one. And why not a Eritrean Flanker? /Bosse
Marlin
Good Evening. It's friday evening and I'm at home. We're not going to the cottage this weekend. We're having a spring cleaing at home. Our landlord is providing us with a few dumpster twice a year and this weekend is one of them. So we're at home. And that means I can do some work on my models tonight. The Postie delivered my replacement bottle of AKAN BS298 Olive Drab today. I ripped the package open when I got home from work and started to paint my Egyptian MF right away. This time the colour was perfect. Both my MiG's are now painted on the topside. I'll do the underside tonight and perhaps I'll also will be able to clearcoat them as well. Now I'll be working under some seroius preasure to be able to meet the May 4 deadline. And since we're having a long weekend here in Sweden starting April 30th I'll have to have them both finished by tuesday evening, as I intend to spend the long weekend in the cottage. It can still be done, I hope. To be continued..... /Bosse
Jabba
Looking good, and you know that you can get at least one finished before the deadline.
Marlin
Thanks Jabba I'll do my best to get at least one finished. But time is running out..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi gang. I'm sorry to announce that I'll not be able finish my MiG's on time. I've got too much left to do on them, and time has run out. After the weekend I'll be starting a new thread in the normal WIP area. /Bosse
SaintsPhil
That's a shame Bosse, but no point rushing them then ending up not happy with them!
Marlin
Thanks Phil. That's exactly my thoughts too. /Bosse
SaintsPhil
Looking back through your thread after some nuggets of info, did you ever decide on a weapons load for the bis? One of my next few builds will be a similar Syrian bis 'in flight' (using that very nice pilot in the seat). Probably a question for Tom too, can/did they carry the dual R-60 rails? Or was that too long ago - early 80s over Leabanon I'm thinking....
