derek burton
I noticed these on the AZ site very interesting, don't know a lot about RAF gliders, anyone know when they used them? Cheers Dek. Edited January 22, 2014 by derek burton
Paul J
Oh yes! Nice line there. The RAF use would have been early postwar period. Late 40's/early 50's. Then probaly limited to a few Gliding schools.
John Aero
I did my first solo on a Grunau Baby at RAF Bicester. It was a genuine ex Luftwaffe one. Quite number of Grunau's found their way to Britain at the end of the war and were used by RAF and Army clubs. John
viscount806x
Years ago I flew a Slingsby Prefect quite a few times over some years and wonder how close the a/c is to the Grunau. I seem to remember being told that the T21 Sedbergh came out of the Grunau and the Prefect from the T21 but how accurate was that info I wonder. A model of the Prefect would be nice and could you get one out of a Grunau?
John Aero
The Prefect wasn't a copy of the Grunau but it was similar and designed to replace it. The Prefect has a slightly greater span but you could mod a Grunau into one. John

stringbag
Many Grunau 11b's were built under license outside Germany though most were captured or otherwise reclaimed in order to train the Hitler youth and budding Luftwaffe pilots. Six were built in Denmark though all were confiscated and returned to Germany. One example, LN+ST, was used by the Luftwaffe throughout the war and was liberated by the British and brought to this country strapped to the side of a battleship. Having been flown extensively from Farnborough, this airframe was eventually de-mobed and ended up in deep storage. By this I mean buried under tons of farm machinery in an old barn. I own one of the original German built Grunau 11b's which is currently being restored to flying condition and as luck would have it, I found LN+ST whilst searching for spares that would be required for the restoration. A very good friend of mine, Niels Jorrup from Denmark eventually identified LN+ST as one of the original Danish built aircraft from printed part number labels still attached to some of the wing internal structure. He immediately made the trip over from Viborg to North Wales to see it for himself. As there was such a rich history attached to the airframe, I felt that it would be wrong to break +ST simply as a source of spare parts for another Grunau and decided to let Niels take it back to Denmark. LN+ST will soon be back in the air following a lengthy restoration. Hopefully, work on my own restoration project will resume in the not too distant future. viscount806x
Possible, I'll see if they scan (size wise) John Thanks John. If you scan with a ruler at the edge of the picture, I can always adjust to the right size before printing. Nige B
