1/72 Tornado Diorama - Late 80's

Zone19

Recommended Posts

Well here is my first WIP. And I want to thank Frietag, Cheshiretauras and Shark65 for thier threads, which have seriously inspired me, so thanks guys!

I have a feeling I may go a little :mental:

A little background first...I'm an Ex-RAF Armourer who worked on Tornado's (GR1's, XV Sqn, and F3's, Tremblers) for 9 years. Love GR1's Despise F3's!! Work that out lol

I've got 2 missions, the first is to build an XV Sqn Tonka in as many scales as possible, I have a 1:1 to play with as well at Bruntingthorpe  ZA326. This is a 1/72, then I have the old Airfix 1:48 and Revel 1:144, both Xmas pressies, and I need to get the 1:32 model.

They will all be Dio's, of the same aircraft. ZA446 'F' 'MacRoberts Reply' XV Sqn.

But which one?

Or B)

EF1024x699_zpsd8cc9515.jpg

My 2nd Mission is to build all the A/C that XV Sqn flew...Bar the period they were part of the Areoplane and Armament Experimental Establishment trial fleet, where they flew over 12,000 hours on over 70 different types!!!!!

It will be an example of everyday life on the flightline, no loadouts, so GroundCrew, AirCrew, GSE and Bomb Trolley as well as all the bits that are there during a T/R (Turn Round)

So here we go with pictures...

A quick look at the Sprue's....as you do...

I've got some AM Resin and PE kits coming from:

Aires - AIRES7085

Eduard - 72297

ModelDecal - MD075

Verlinden - 517

Airwaves - AES72028

I know both of the bottom 2 are designed for use with the Hasegawa Kits...Apparently I'm great with my hands...Gotta love a loving Missus

PP Areoparts 1/72 CBLS200 with 3Kg's, I'm going to have to make some 28lbers as well as the 3Kg nose cones! Lots of flattening on the 3Kgs as well...

Also there will be some GSE - I've got the ladders from the Verlinden PE bits, but also I'm doing a Flightpath Nitrogen Trolley and a small walk round kit, a Bomb trolley towed behind a 'Wendy', Type W Weapons Loader, which I'll have to scratch build, but I have the plans for it :goodjob:

Cheers for looking, and looking forward to the comments :analintruder:

As an ex XV Sqn liney (84-87) it's a no brainer!! Got to be Foxtrot without the red fin!!!

Really? When in 87 did you get there? I arrived in May 87

Yep - definitely without the red fin!

I've got some spare Hasegawa Tornado decals if they are any use to you as spares?

B

Brian, I shall keep that in mind thank you  I'll PM you if I need them

Welcome fellow plumber....

Thanks Young Man...How's things going?

That 28lber looks more like a 14kg to me Zone 19 me old mucker. And those 3kg's look a lot like the old 4lber.

Scoots

Bombhead for 23 years

They look like 3's and 28's to me :hmmm:

That wendy takes me back a few years, heavy bombing at West Freugh on the Harrier OCU

Driven and ridden a few

Right...Seeing as I've been messing about with this for a couple of weeks....Here is the progress to date.

I did some dry fittings to see what the fit was like and to be honest I'm not too impressed...

Seats aren't up to much either...Sorry it's a little out of focus.

In the nose wheel bay the CB's are showing, but the layout is wrong....So will go with the resin part

So down to the first piece I'm doing...The Nav's console...Matt black, dark green screens, and the main one drip fed with superglue to produce a glass screen effect...Then I got my Archimedes drill and made 4 0.5mm holes in the rear for the cables and superglued in some beading wire (24 gauge), the Mother-in-Laws idea, for the cables coming out...

Next up is the 'Office' where the growbags live....

F8E54A92-4AA8-40EC-8168-C9DB62BB0221_zps

The business panels so far, the need a bit of superglue to make them screen like.

D104DB41-3630-4554-9FE5-0356A4DE8930_zps

And the 'Bang Seats' so far...

146A01D5-AAE3-4B9A-8FAB-A6A123B8EB28_zps

There is still loads more to do on the seats, but of the ones I saw these don't have straps over the seat, as they were never left in the seat.

Thanks for looking.

Should be an interesting build.

Ah, zone 19, many a night shift spent wedged in that part of the a/c tightening up ifr fuel pipes. Bloody old hyd oil was a bit annoying to say the least.

Where did you get the pp aeroparts CBLS 200 from? I can never find any, and really want some for my FF Tornado Gr4 build.

LOL Doing the 'Locking Wire' for the seat :(

I got those from eBay, some guy in the states, I just checked his store, but he only has CBLS100's...They really are like 'Rocking Horse Sh!t!!!!'

I asked David Perkins at Flightpath if he intended to do any in 1/72nd, but said he isn't, he does them in 1/48th though....

Aye, the fairies loved being asked to drop the crate for people didn't they lol.

It's 1/72 I am modelling in, so will just have to keep eyes pinned. I considered using 100 's but they just won't look right.

Will keep eyed on your build too. I worked on MacRoberts Reply in its Gr4 guise, when on XV from 2004 to 2007.
