1/32 Bae Hawk T1

Recommended Posts

This is my most recent completed kit and first foray into 1/32 scale for me. It's Revell's 1/32 Red Arrows boxing of the Hawk T1. Used the Big Ed photo etch set and Xtradecal's 2009 Display scheme decals, also had to buy their stencil sheet as there is a couple of mistakes with the stencils on the display sheet. Paints were Tamiya X-1 black..... lots of black! If I do another one I'll be getting resin bang seats as I don't like the look of the photo etch belts.

that is a lovely black, glossy finish. what is your secret?

Andy

I followed a tutorial on another site, basically made sure to polish up the plastic where required so it was smooth with no hint of a scratch or seam line then used Alclads grey primer which goes on really nice. Went over the primer with micro mesh cloths to polish it up and then sprayed on 3 or 4 layers of Tamyia X-1 gloss black thinned with Mr Color self levelling thinners. The coats of gloss black should be progressively thinner so the last ones a very thinly mixed with the thinners. Decals then went on followed by brush painting a layer of Klear using a large soft flat brush. I certainly can't take the credit for the technique but it seams to work quite well, think the self levelling thinners the secret ingredient!

It was no problem, comes in two bits, a smaller section which goes to the front of the wheel bays and then the big section covers between the wheel bays and everywhere else, just don't do what I did and had the fairings for the flap actuators glued in place! The have seperate decals and go on after. Make sure you have some Micro Sol and Micro Set solution, helps a lot.

Looks really nice Muzz, the finish is very smooth.

There's something a little bit off with the positioning of the gear doors (the blue ones attached to the gear struts) to my eye - could just be the photo angle, but it looks like they should be moved about another 15degrees toward the vertical so that the lower, pointy end points more toward the ground a little further forward from where it is presently?
