Flankerman
Another missile-launcing sub - the Soviet diesel-powered 'Whiskey Long Bin. This one is armed with 4 X SS-N-13 'Shaddock' anti-ship missiles in streamlined containers either side of the conning tower...... Ken
Alan P
Great looking sub, the Type XXI heritage is obvious. Looks like something off Stingray though! Al

MikeR
Nice! One of my favourite versions of the Whisky - so oddball it's cool. Gotta love Soviet ship design! Mike.
Flankerman
It also looks to be more efficient that the US subs like USS Tunny, Grayback and Halibut. They all had to surface to fire their missiles, but the Soviet designs had their missiles in tubes, ready to go. The US subs had to open the hangar, remove the Regulus missile, unfold the wings, raise the launch ramp, then fire it - all whilst exposed on the surface. I know that the Regulus was a nuclear armed cruise missile and the Whiskey's Shaddocks were smaller anti-ship - but why couldn't the Regulus (both I & II) be containerised ??? - it would have simplified launching. They were later superceded by the Polaris system - which could be launched whilst submerged. Ken
