jetboy
HI,As im just finishing the Altair version of the lunar lander,i thought id start this one as well,im going to use a resin model of the new orion capsule{supplied by Martins Models}.as the crew compartment, and see where we go from there,it looks very similar to the eagle in someways?.so heres the pics im using ,ive only got two pics of it,... so heres the start... the first thing i realised, its going to be big? cutting some plastic to make a support collar for the capsule, well its the first idea i had?it may change as we go on,this journey of enlightenment?? orion capsule position the hole is to accept the command section of the capsule cutting out the back section ,which houses the tanks and engines putting some scrap on the inside of the bulkheads as ive a lot to fasten to it,it needs a bit of strength which hopefully should go together something like this? made the capsule brace/collar thicker as its going to support a lot of struts which should end up like this? well thats it for tonight, need to think on this a bit further? thanks for looking, cheers, Don

GordonD
Always enjoy following your builds, Don - you seem to come up with the most obscure subjects! Makes a nice change from the usual Shuttles and Apollo builds (though we can never have enough of those).
jetboy
well, gordon, thanks for your kind words, cheered me up. well heres a thing,i made the lander collar hex shaped, because i could,nt find anything strong and circular in my scrap, but last night,in the corner of the stash room, was this soil pipe, and whoa ho!its a perfect match for the orion capsule, oooooh the endless possibilities, that opened up in my vimto addled mind??? hav a butchers... pondering Don
GordonD
I shudder to think why you have a length of soil pipe in your spares stash. I shudder even more thinking of the poor sod who used to own it...
jetboy
SO. a revisit and revision of this,to go on the ongoing direarama, so started by dismantled all of the above.... going to try and fit tanks here... something like this,by the way its the orion capsule..making the body... should look something like?? making the shielding for the tanks, not sure if this will be the final design, but it will do for now.. making the landing gear ,holders.. front one will fit here.. cobbling some hydraulic gear together.. making some structure along the sides to hold engines etc tank support structure sides structures which will fit here somewhere.. putting rear landing gear in possible position.. should look something along these lines.. and and maybe.. need to finalise a design, instead of making it up as i go along,so it might change a bit yet...lol thanks for looking don ps its not bent.... GordonD
Good to see this moving again, Don. I may have mentioned this before but if you're interested in "what-if" lunar landers, then you should get hold of this book: There's enough in there to keep you going for YEARS!
jetboy
cheers gordon d,nice to see your still intrested..lol Right im really struggling to build something different, even though the pic im using,is vague in its detail,im finding it,s heading to space 1999 territory, not by choice i might add..lol anyway trying a few options before i decide where im going or which design im doing, thats the best thing with building your own, it can go anyway....lol trying this for now... how do i build engines etc...lol? might work... well,we,ll see how it goes.... cheers don

jetboy
Found some bits lying round that might pass for retro/manouvering jets, to a blind man passing on a galloping horse,so am going to use them. cheers, don
jetboy
alright, well wopped a bit of plastic on,stuck some bits ere an there, threw some colour on it,as a undercoat, and to be honest.it does,nt look too bad, what do you reckon... trying to figure out someway of affixing the solar panels.. might try this way.... might not ? trying to fill in the cargo area with some bits,on the photo it has a dish array here... stuck some paint on... not looking too shabby,so i will proceed with attaching retros/manouvering jets, and some details and a bit more colour. ok,thanks for looking, don
MartG
Looking good Don Good to see this moving again, Don. jetboy
sticking a bit on for the cargo area,it needs a satellite array,so starting on providing a opening cover, was going to go for a door type... didnt like that, trying to make a venetian blind type door, see how that looks... tried to score it only, but that didnt work,so gluing... so we,ll see what that will look like???? cheers don
jetboy
so might decide on the backend, which consists of the helium 3 storage tanks, and a covering of panels ,and underneath a enclosing impact shield,so trying a few things, ive decided it might go something like this.... but i,ll sleep on that.... don
jetboy
whilst still trying to work out the back end,ive given a little bit of thought,to the cargo area and satellite array, then i disregarded that and thought i,ll stick as few bits in... first got rid of that grey.... painted the venetian cargo bay door.. gonna put some detail in the descent engine cowls.. and maybe use some old shuttle bay doors... so making some inserts for the side pods... that will do to stasrt with... engines and other bits to go in... now need to fit the sat array... cheers don
jetboy
well quiet night, just banged a few bits on,whilst listening to the very scary david paulides interviews,,, bit of work in the array area and the side pods need to ponder on the sat antenna, etc cheers don
GordonD
I was going to comment on the decals, as the 'worm' logo is no longer in use. However if the lander is a 1993 design then you're probably okay. Though I don't think they ever used the worm and meatball at the same time. GrahamS
Excellent stuff, Don, and as you say very Eagle-esque (it even has similar shaped landing pads). One question though, how was the command module intended to return to orbit, given that it's pointing forward and not upward? Graham
jetboy
beg to differ graham..... as to the rest,i,ll think about it.....lol don the eagle is more red dwarf or vice versa...lol thanks for looking though...don lol
