Wez
I'm not normally a tank modeller but I'm considering something different for the Korean War GB if it makes the cut. I'm after recommendations for kits of allied tanks used in Korea, particularly if there's after-market decals available. So what do you know good people, who makes a decent kit of an Allied tank variant used in Korea and who makes some alternative stickers for it? I'm not bothered about scale but will baulk at anything that costs an arm and two legs! Wez
Peter Marshall
Well i've got a couple of suggestions: Bronco do a 1/35th scale M-24 Chaffee specifically with Korean war markings Hobbyboss do a 1/48th M4 Sherman again with Korean war markings M26 Pershings and M48 Pattons have a few kits available. M-41 Walker Bulldog ( named after the Pusan Perimeter commander who died just after the breakout) M-3 Half Tracks That gives you some to be going on with - i've got the Bronco Chaffee kit at it does look lovely. davidelvy
And if you fancy something from the UK there were Centurions, Churchill Crocodiles and, surprisingly, some Cromwells.
BillyB
And don't forget that the Centurion and Churchill were also used. Bill....
fatfingers
You have several options for kits. UK Cromwell (Tamiya) Churchill Mkvii and Crocodile (Tamiya) US AM26 Pershing (Tamiya, Hobby Boss) M4A3E8 (Dragon) M24 Chaffee (Italeri Bronco) M46 Patton (Dragon) As regards decals, check out Bison. Im sure they Do Korean war markings for various nations. The Tamiya M26 and i think the Crocodile kit has Korean war markings in the box Regard Steve Edited December 8, 2013 by fatfingers

Wez
Thanks for the gen folks, I quite like the idea of doing something British if I do a tank, a Cromwell or a Churchill seem rather anachronistic so I'll look around and see what I can come up with. I'll probably revert to type when it comes to it but you've certainly given me some food for thought! Wez

AngloSaxon
Did they use Comets in Korea? They did indeed (according to Wiki). Edit: I've since been informed that it's debatable whether Comets were actually used in Korea and that they may have actually just been stationed in Hong Kong Mike D. bigh827
U.S. all so used the M16 half track, the one with four .50 cals in AA mount. They all so used the M7 priest with a lift kit on the gun mount so it could fire at a greater angle. The M8 and M20 armored cars were all so used. Foxbat
I've been following the same line of thought. Some things I've found in addition to the info above: Bison do 9 sheets of 1/35 decals for Allied vehicles in Korea. The Commonwealth one includes Centurions and Churchills (plus a Dingo and a Universal Carrier). AFV Club do a highly regarded Centurion range and the Mk.5 with the dozer blade has Korean War markings and is fairly easy to get hold of but inevitably is the most expensive one they do. The Mk.III and the Mk.5 are essentially the same externally (the 5 has different MGs and an extra stowage box on the glacis), so backdating a 5 to a III isn't a big job. Note that the 5/1 and 5/2 are very different beasts though. Academy do a Centurion Mk.III which is quite a bit cheaper and it was cheaper again when it was reissued by Modelcraft. Reviews say that this one is very similar to the early 70s Tamiya kit, which is also not too hard to find but is a bit more expensive, so there's a definite price/quality curve. Something that has come up a couple of times in my reading was that the Centurion's first kill was a Comet that had been captured by the North Koreans. As ever though, internet 'facts' are worth exactly what you pay for them
Antoine
For a Korean war M24, you can also now check AFV Club.

Peter Lloyd
Dragon have recently released their M-46 as an 'Orange Box' (cheap) kit with figures. I think Sprue Brothers has them. The ancient Tamiya Centurion has KRIH Korea markings in the box. I think the Canadian troops had some CMP vehicles like the Otter recce car. I don't think either the M-41 or M-47 were in time for Korea, but am open to correction on this. There are also many options on the Chaffee chassis- the Duster and various SP artillery pieces. rickshaw
Late addenda: Sorry forgot this one: US Army M45 Assault Tank (M46 hull with modified turret to mount 105mm Howitzer). The M4 Shermans were initially ones taken from stocks in Japan and hurriedly modified to carry 76mm guns (something which had been claimed impossible in WWII). So, you can have a mix of VVS suspension systems, early hulls and with 75mm turrets with 76mm guns. M47s arrived at the end of the war and were used in several batles IIRC. sharky
If you want to do a Canadian theme you could build an M4A2(76) or M4A3E8 with Strathcona markings. Unfortunately the Centurion wasn't used in Korea by the RCAC. All of them went to Europe with the RCD's. Evan

Stuart Wilson
I've just finished an AFV club Centurion (the Israeli one) and hated every minute of it! not an easy build. The Tamiya M26 comes with USMC markings for Korea and is an easy build, but it is designed to represent a WWII version so is only suitable for an early war USMC version. The army's ones had various minor mods and new tracks. Stuart
