Those snap-together kits might be interesting, shame some are 1/200 instead of 1/144; seems slightly bizarre to have two different scales, although presumably Zvezda have their reasons. I'll certainly be looking at the Fairey Battle.

Sorry if this has been answered before but is the Flanker a new mould (exciting based on their current quality) or a re-tread of their previous kit (rather poor not exceiting!). Glad to have a firm quater for the Il-62 the Zvezda airliners are wonderful kits.

My question exactly! I'd love to see a new tool Flanker series from Zvezda, especially if the quality is up to their newer kits. That old Flanker with the raised panel lines doesn't pass muster with me, but I suppose it just could be me! :)

Cheers,

Bill

They're aimed at the wargaming crowd where having small gaming pieces to move around is considered better than having constant scale.

The Zveda Flanker is a brand new mould in 1/72 scale - it is part of a series of Flankers planned by them.

The first release is a Su-27SM ..... I photographed part of the moulds when I visited Zvezda last September.....

Here's the sprue diagram for the fuselage - notice how they have made it a separate part so that they can incorporate different front ends to make different versions....

The Zvezda Su-27SM is due for release in '1st Qtr' of this year.

The CAD designer Alexander is now working on a Su-33.....

Ken, is the SM much different from the first operational variants ? If I want to build say an Ucranian aircraft, would the SM box be ok ?

Visually, the Su-27SM differs in having small rod-like antenna on the leading-edge slats at half-span - easily sanded off.

The biggest problem will be the kit windscreen - it has an offset IRST ball (but no IFR probe).

A 'standard' Su-27 has a central IRST ball...

This is a Su-27SM at MAKS.....

Su-27SM at Lipetsk in 2005......

There might be other, smaller, differences - especially in the cockpit - but the biggest issue is the windscreen IRST ball (and its mounting platform on the fuselage).

Your best bet is the Trumpeter Flankers - Su-27 and Su-27 (Early) kits.
