Haggis9444 Posted November 25, 2013 Share Posted November 25, 2013 Good evening. I have just bought the Airfix 1/24 Spitfire Vb. I quite fancy doing an alternative colour scheme, I have seen pictures of the restored BM597 in the sky/tan/green. Does anyone know where I could possibly get similar decals. I also I have really enjoyed using Tamiya spraycans recently, what colour is the correct one for RAF tan, is it AS15? Finally, am I correct in thinking that Tamiya doesn't do SKY in a spraycan? (I've seen various suggestions to use an IJN colour but could do with advice.) Any help appreciated. Mark, Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Adam Maas Posted November 26, 2013 Share Posted November 26, 2013 (edited) The 'Tan' in that scheme would be Dark Earth, which is listed as AS22 in their charts. The scheme worn by BM597 is the standard early/mid Spitfire scheme, to be exact the Temperate Land Scheme of Dark Green/ Dark Earth / Sky with Sky fuselage band and spinner. There is no Sky in Tamiya's spray line. AS29 is vaguely in the ballpark, but you're much better off simply using an inexpensive airbrush to spray XF21 (or someone else's Sky). My 2 pence is this. The Brown is wrong. I have found that the mix of suggested get one pretty close and it has worked a treat. I was at the Army Airforce museum last weekend and noticed the brown used on the helicopter cammo. I suspect that is the brown used on the BOB flight aircraft. The Vallejo RAF Brown is also too dark so be warned. I managed to match up a Vallejo colour to my home made mix from the factory swabs. Having Tried it yet, but will gig out the number if you want. Here is what I use Dark Earth Brown: XF 52 – 2 partsXF 49 Kahki – 2 partsXF 3 yellow – 1 part Green - XF-81 Sky Type S - XF-21 Hope that helps. The Tamiya dark does look too dark for BM597 but if its all I can get then it'll have to do. Im already going to have to brush paint the underside sky. Mark. Haggis9444 Posted December 1, 2013 Author Share Posted December 1, 2013 Just got the Spit delivered... THIS KIT IS @&**$^ ROUGH.... I dont think I have ever seen so much excess plastic on each part. Doing in BM597 scheme is slowly descending into the too difficult bracket. I can't find suitable 1/24 serials, I've spent hours online looking at lots of different RAF decal sets but can't find any that are 'just right', TECHMOD seem to be the best bet so far. I still think that TAMIYA AS15 (tan) is much closer to the 'Dark earth' on this particular aircraft and as I'm wanting to use spraycans as much as possible I dont think I could do that particular scheme justice, (I was thinking about using a black undercoat to darken it slightly). Since Ive already got Spifires in 1/72 1/48 and 1/32 in the grey/green scheme I was really hoping to do something different with this. If anyone has suggestions or could point me in the direction of 1/24 numbers I'd be grateful. Anyway... Mark. Well it's your model but AS15 is actually closer to Light Earth and even Middle Stone than Dark Earth which is at 18+ where < 2.0 = a close match . . . Mr T Posted December 2, 2013 Share Posted December 2, 2013 Having seen the restored a/c at Duxford in the flesh a couple of years back, it looked as if the colours were a pretty good match to Temperate Land Scheme However, I have noticed that some of photos on the web, the 'brown' does look quite light. You could contact the owners, Historic Aircraft Collection, who are based at Duxford There is a contact page for their website at http://www.historicaircraftcollection.ltd.uk/contact/ From what I have found out, the specialist paints suppliers match their colours to the different colour standards and so it would not be that difficult for the restorers to ask for the colours of Temperate Land scheme and the Sky undersurfaces.
