Hi oh dear Have I used the wrong colour.. I thought HU226 interior green was ok. I thought it looked a little dark hence the thin coat over grey.

I am familiar with HU90 duck egg blue or sky. I have a tub of that for the nose and tail banding. But I did not think that was the interior colour.

HU78 looks like the colour I have.

Advice welcome I can repaint it if it looks totally wrong.

You should know by now the Law of Painting Spitfires. Whatever colour you paint anything, it's wrong. :bobby:

Cheers guys yes I know there seems to be alot of strict colour people out there which is fine.
I sometimes use the "correct shades" but I do also break the law and use colours I feel look more close to my eye when I want to create a certain look I know the science arguments its just what pleases me.

What started me off Down this route is this. When I was younger back in the 90s I made a model of XH558 I remember I was frustrated with hu30 which back then I was told was ww2 raf green. I was seeking brownish green and was advised of hu163 at the time I remember being very excited as I had fell inlove with the weirdly beautiful colour. I was pleased that it was exactly what I wanted back then and I was told at the time was post war raf green. This was way back in the early 90s when daily I used to get wraparound jags tornados buccs and harrier gr5/7 belting over my house and school. 20 odd years later I built another XH558 as my ex had kindly destroyed my old 558 so it was time to build another one. I can remember being disappointed to see hu163 is now a much greener shade fine for alot of stuff but this sent me looking for other shades.
I hear a few years ago they tweaked the colours and added a scaled tone to them then there were problems with Chinese production.
Etc... Then I read up on batches manufactures painting in different conditions and the many other variables and decided to use these colours as a safety net guide rather than trust them to be "acurate" I have read all the arguments and can only say its ok to do whatever makes you feel happy but its good we do have matches and its also good to have artistic liscence.
I have used many colours for many aircraft now and even painted 3 aircraft with the same tub of paint any all 3 are a different hue.
One of my favourite colours for Raf dark green is hu66 but for things like vulcans javelins etc it looks like hu163 when it fades quickly to a darker tone but interestingly I recently found an old tub of hu163 from around 1992 and its much darker and browner that the current offering so of the manufactures can't get it right better to trust your eyes I reckon interestingly it had more in common with hu66 than the current 163.
I really wish I hadent typed this now as I don't want it to cause a debate it's just me sharing with you my experiments and expiriances.

I am also not disputing the science and I hope everyone likes worms hehehe still don't listen to me this is what I did to a hunter.... eeek

This morning I am nearly at the stage I can start painting the insides..

This kit sure is a wake up call for me when it comes to interiors. I must say I am enjoying it I just wish I had more time. Its certainly wet my appetite for having a crack at a kit with some nice resin interiors PE sets and other goodies. I wonder if anyone makes miniature cigarette boxes to leave casually on the seats..

Right I have the smaller details in and I have painted the interior with HU226 and then washed with Citadel Nuln oil. Then I will go back and pick out the smaller details though according to the instructions nearly everything is green in there.

Thanks Ørjan

I have started to ponder about how to go about fitting it together and masking all the internals when I am finished, I still need to do the rear wheel, radio pack, fuel tank and engine so I have a long way to go.

I just taped this together to get a feel for what is actually going to be visible. Its a shame alot of detail will be out of sight but its there.. which is cool

I just need to know what they are then I can order them,

Rob, they are by Airscale and come in most flavours...you'll need the RAF ones, though you might want to consider the placards too,....they really are a must have as far as I'm concerned, (just need a lot of 'em !)

Do you swirl Ibanez Jems as well ? :hypnotised:

Hi well I spent ages figuring out how to do it. I have swirled many things but not got around to swirling one yet. In the end I went to Out of This Swirled. But I am still considering doing my own.

I cocked up the hunter and made a mistake I really shouldnt have by now and put too much paint in. I think I was enjoying the look of the yellow orange and black to much.

It seems now there are many who have figured out what was a secret. there are a few ways of doing it.

Here is one of my customs swirls.

Many thanks Rob

I have used a bit of superglue to cover up this nasty little hole.

null_zpsee2ded11.jpg

Then I painted with a very thin coat of revel matt black. Later I will high light the smaller details with silver shades then give it a dry brush of dark silver then a coat of klear to give a grimy sheen.

(hopefully)

null_zps2b19c96a.jpg

Meanwhile in the pit I have started to pick out smaller details in black silver and red, then I have dry brushed some citadel boltgun metal to high light them a little

I just need to work out were all these little decals go now.... (I will need glasses at the end of this I reckon)

I have high lighted the smaller parts that are stated as silver or steel again with citadels.

I am a little worried as to how this engine will look at the front in case it simply looks like a caged brick. Looking at the real ones it looks like there are many more cables and pipes etc..

I have never done anything like this but I am wondering about using solder etc but I have not a clue were to put what and trying to figure it out looks a nightmare.. Hats off the the guys who designed the original Must have been hard work..

Update time again folks.

Right I give the silver parts a wash with the citadel nuln oil then I dry brushed with citadel boltgun metal.

null_zpsed69c35d.jpg

null_zpsc7185ada.jpg

Then I thought I would try out this new floor polish I came across last week at my local Lakeland store that opened with Webb's of Wychbold garden centre.

I brushed on one coat neat from the bottle to give a light sheen and oily metallic appearance. It seems to have worked a treat and only £5.99

It went on more like the old Klear and did not pool at all. Smells like Xtracrylics and dries lightning fast too so I take it is latex acyrilic. I think I'll be using this more often. Ill do a proper test out soon and see how it handles canopies and decals.

More parts to cut and file......

null_zpsdc494ae9.jpg

This time its the engine bulkhead and holding frame.

I have glues the 3 frame pieces and just clipped into place around the engine and bulkhead to assure alignment is right. Then I can paint them and stick it together.

Nice stuff mate......the Merlin would look cool swirled !

Really like the idea behind the sig JEM 20th and the clear acrylic body with 3D internal designs lit using green LEDS ......looks organic...(hmmm wonder where I can get hold of that much clear acrylic and mould holder !)....

Go for it Andy you know you will love it.. Its a special Resin that has been specially designed and selected for its tonal nature and I have to agree it works it sounds far cleaner than any other guitar I have ever played and has way more sustain than any other guitar I have ever tried.

It weighs a ton though. But that not a problem.

I would not want to play this guitar out doors on a major flight path the anywhere though.. a swirled merlin... hmm I guess there is some detail to be seen there but its not the first thing I would swirl. I really must sort that hunter out after its odd flight through liquid psychedelia.

I guess if the hippies won in the 60s a swirled hunter might have actually happened. for pilots and onlookers to just enjoy flight because its cool and the swirl would be the camo of peace and wierd trips..

(Man I talk some utter rubbish don't I....) Its all these fumes I reckon..

Looks at his watch ... "Should be at the decal stage by now" :pilot: ... looking good Rob :thumbsup2:

Well I need to decal the instrument panel next so your not wrong there... In my mind the model is finished.

After all this work on the internals and the panels that cover the engine there does not seem to be anything to hold them I guess its gonna be tacky wax so they can be taken on and off. I am not sure about exposing the guns or not yet as I think they have included clear panels to see them through and that is not my cup of tea..

Cheers all Rob

Coming along great Rob. That Merlin really looks the dogs doo-dahs, I like the nice oily sheen you have managed to get on it. Brilliant stuff buddy, keep going as you are doing and I have no doubt it will be finished in time for Santa's delivery sack.
