Supermarine Spitfire Mk I (Tamiya 1/48)

Recommended Posts

This is last model I finished.

The aircraft modelled is the DW-O of the 610th RAF Squadron that operated from Biggin Hill in July 1940 during the Battle of Britain.

It's my pride. For me, it's the best model I have build so far.
The Tamiya kit is excellent with superb fit, great detail and very easy to build.
It gave my no trouble at all. It was very relaxing and I enjoyed it very much.

Here are some photos from the last stages of WIP with close ups.

The exhausts are painted with a mix of Humbrol Metalcote Gun Metal, Metalcote Steel, Metallic Blue, Bronze and afterwards they were dry brushed with Metelcote Gun Metal και Rust.

Great stuff. I cant wait for my Vb to arrive. I have never built a Tamiya but only hear good things about them. I will have to wait and see if the comments are true.

Fabulous result. Cheers Rob ;)

Very nice Spitfire indeed!

I really like the restrained weathering, the authentic looking exhausts and the very typical drooping elevators.

The common nitpick: the crowbar on the cockpit hatch was not red on WWII machines, but either steel or a green colour. Also, the cockpit hatch doesn't hang straight down, but at a shallow angle (just look at pictures and you'll see what I mean).

Otherwise, truly excellent work. Well done!

Kind regards,

Joachim

Hello Joachim.

Thank you for your comments! Much appreciated.

Referring to the colour of the crowbar, I now have one more hint for the argument we had in the Greek forum for that exact point.

To be honest, seeing pictures, I had initially painted it steel, but changed it when a couple of more experienced modellers told me otherwise.

It turns out I was right.

Similar argument was discussed about the seat colour... But I decided to let it be "cockpit green" as I would damage the seatbelts if I attempted to repaint it. I would love to read your opinion and resources on the seat colour!

No comment on the hatch. Probably me bad for glueing it wrong. :banghead::whistle:
