Richie
Hey guys, i`m looking to do a little bit of research on the role my grandfather would have done during his service, and if its possible to do a little diorama as a tribute to him. Talking to my grandmother the info she can remember is... Corporal within the Royal Corps of Transport. Served in Egypt for 3 years (1947-1950) He was a driver, Lorry & motorcycle while in Egypt and when returning to Lanarkshire/Glasgow/Edinburgh he was the Generals chauffeur driving a Humber Pullman. (Sorry i dont know where he was based when back home) So can anyone point me in the right direction on reference material of the vehicles he would have used in the role of a driver post war? Thanks for any help it will be much appreciated Richie Edited November 11, 2013 by Richie
Test Graham
Les Freathy's recent book for Tankograd on "British Military Trucks of WW2" is the best reference. It won't allow you to narrow down specific types to units or even theatres, but the postwar ones will have been rare at in the ME at this period. Myfirst stab would be a Bedford QL, which has the advantage of being available in a number of scales, but there are other possibilities, the other 4x4s being good contenders. I suspect one of the best web sources for help on which units used what trucks would be Missing Link, on their WWII Allied forum. http://www.network54.com/Forum/47208/
Andrew Jones
There would still be mostly WWII era vehicles around at this time , especially in places like Egypt , as the newer post war production would probably not have arrived here yet. So you would expect to see Bedford MW and Morris 15 cwt's, Bedford OX 3 tonners , Bedford QL and Fordson WOT 3ton 4x4's , CMP Chevrolet and Ford 3ton and 30cwt 4x4's and perhaps some larger 6 and 10 ton load carriers, possibly even some surviving US built trucks.
