Total Scratch build of the front end of a B17G!

Hi there

I managed to almost finish the IP....when I say nearly finished...I mean there is another small panel that is fixed to the right hand side of the main panel which holds the controls for the carburetor air cleaner and engine fire extinguishers..this I will attempt to build next.

So here was my method of making the IP................

Instrument panel

1. First I got a drawing of the IP off the internet and resized it to 1:20 scale................

n001_zps20129d9c.jpg

2. I then cut out the dials individually because the shape of my IP wasn't quite right!! ....never mind eh?!!! and glued them onto a cut piece of plastic in the shape of the IP............

n003_zps9eded35d.jpg

3. I then cut another piece of plastic to the same shape of the IP and drilled out holes where the instruments are positioned.......

4. The next job was to cover the instruments with the thinnest clear food packaging I could find in my kitchen bin!!...this of course acts as the glass! ;)

d004_zpsea21c607.jpg

5. I then glued the pre cut panel over the other panel with the instruments on................

t001_zpsd578449c.jpg

6. With the use of bits of plastic and wire I then glued all the knobs /buttons and bits and bobs onto the IP!!!..............

garden002_zps5257086f.jpg

7. Applied some black paint.............

k001_zpsc8be532b.jpg

8. Then I finished painting all the appropriate bits...............

w003_zpsfd927487.jpg

9. ..............and finally glued the panel into the Cockpit....here are a couple of pics........

It took me 3 odd days but I'm happy with the end result.

On with that other small panel now

Thanks for looking in :)

Fozzy

Happy with the result- I should say that's an under statement......it looks amazing especially with all that detail, keep it up👍👍👍👍👍👍

Just thought I'd point out something that I have just noticed when looking over this build for the ... well who's counting? :pilot:
Take a look at the pictures where the instrument panel is installed in the cockpit. If you pay attention to the way the light falls through the windows it looks exactly as the real thing. It's incredible. You can almost smell the mix of engine oil, fuel and hydraulicks and old sweatty leather.

I know you live in Bulgaria but Im willing to drive from the UK and back to pick you up at the end of the year so this amazong model can be put on display at the IPMS Telford Model Show!!!

And there is me moaning about simply painting a cockpit green or black haha!

Right then Fozzy. That's enough hosting & socialising - we need some more B17 action. Don't you know there's a huge bunch of forlorn modelling acolytes out there, pining for some scratch building updates! Don't keep us in suspenders for much longer ............ please?!

Hi every one

I'm glad you have sent the rescue team out to get me back to the bench!!

I have had a few Gigs with the Band I'm in and had to put most of my energy into that...but its "thank you and goodnight" to that .....and My Family are returning to UK tomorrow ...as it happens .... so I will be restarting the old B17 in the next couple of days!

I reckon that I should have an update on the cockpit area soon! :)

You better fill your tank up Maverick231...Ill be waiting for you....it will only take you 5 days to get here!! ;) ....and yes I have got the old yoghurt pots stocked up Pete!!

Back real soon with an update...have missed the buzz of it all!

Hi all

Its been some time since I last posted....Family have departed for UK the planned gig with the band is done and dusted and now its back to the work bench! :)

Time to continue with the cockpit

First thing I did was place the wooden floors down ....using wood samples I got from B+Q a few years back...I knew they would come in handy one day! ;) .....and then I had to think about how to replicate the cockpit side wall insulation. I decided to use some stretchy tissue I have....God knows what its used for and where I got it but I thought it would be good for the insulation!

Prior to all that I had to do some more measuring and adjust part of the floor because it just didn't look right...it seemed far too short where the control columns will be placed later...what a drag!!! :( .....a lot of this build is all done by measuring with the eye I am afraid!!

Any how here are some pics of the floor and walls...(before painting).........

k002_zps3573aef9.jpg

k001_zps20b9b2fe.jpg

b001_zps517142eb.jpg

I painted the insulation (tissue) and whilst all that was drying I tackled some of the equipment beside the co pilot side wall....fidely but enjoyable to scratch!................

k007_zps5cc86177.jpg

The last 4 photo's on this post are of the two halves together showing some of the co pilots equipment.....................

b014_zpsfccef084.jpg

b015_zps1de7263c.jpg

b009_zpse70b0d93.jpg

I have still got to do more detail on the starboard side wall ...when that's complete I'll start on the pilots side wall.

I have realized that this project is not going to be finished this year...I am finding it all a bit daunting ..not knowing what the whole thing is going to look like when its complete!.....so for those of you who are following this I'm afraid there is no light at the end of the tunnel yet!! :(

Thanks guys for encouraging me to continue with this

It's ok you don't finish it this year, Fozzy. I'm truly enjoying this build. I know it's not very polite, but I hope this build goes on for a long time.
It's just totally crazy what you do and it's a pleasure following you.

listen model making chums....thanks a lot for your support....I get days when I think that I should just build a model from my stash instead of scratch building....but you all help me continue with this crazy project...so for that I thank you all :)

Here is a close up shot of the scratched detail...........................

So the tunnel has been extended?

Just so long as there IS a light at the end of it,

I for one am willing to wait.

I'm enjoying the walk & hoping there isn't a train coming!

A quick update on a couple of afternoons work..........................

The control box beside the Pilots leg

I really enjoyed building this!...3/4s of an inch square roughly....although my eyes took a bit of a toll!! :(

Here's the control box prior to painting.............................

g003_zps0148f3f7.jpg

usual materials were used to put this together(Plastic and wire)..............

here it is painted.......................

g004_zps0fee215c.jpg

...and here it is placed in the cockpit.................

I have yet to wire it up and of course add all the other boxes/wires.switches etc on this side of the cockpit.

So until then...thanks for looking in
