robvulcan Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 HI folks. I need some advice and if possible links to photos of Harrier GR3's in the winter scheme of white and dark sea grey. I have long intended to do a model of one on a diorama with netting and other details and such on and around it poking between a few trees and bushes. Ideally I want photos of them Actually in snowy conditions as I intend to model it with Precision Ice and Snow. I also need advice on the scale I should go for as I know I will likely need to buy ground accessories but not sure what to buy so I need educating there. I was thinking 1/72 Initially but I might go for 1/48 as I like the old airfix 1/48 kit and I imagine there might be more accessories for that. Any advice greatly appreciated. Cheers Rob
AnonymousAA72 Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I've seen pic's of GR7's deployed at Bardufoss, but they tend to be parked on the snowy runway there. Not sure about field deployments on the GR3 in the snow though, especially with 'netting' and it poking its nose out of a 'hide'. Dennis Robinson (Sloegin57) is probably the man who may know.... 1
robvulcan Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 Thanks Bill I will contact him. I don't know if its something that ever happened. I have seen GR3 and GR1s in woodland with hides and panelling on the floor as make shift taxiways and I love the look of harriers like this. With the winter scheme which I see modelled but I have never seen a photo of a real one painted as such I thought It would be a good excuse to model snow. However Maybe I would be better off just doing a standard camo version in the snow. I guess this must have happened at least once. I am also keen to find a good reason to buy airfix's new harrier kit. Not that I need an excuse looks like a good kit. Cheers Rob
AnonymousAA72 Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I came across this....its a pointy nosed GR3, by the look of it..best I could find!!! I 1
robvulcan Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 hahaha cheers Bill yes I have often wondered if these were a whiffy type of thing as I have never seen a real one painted in anything other than wrap around, or camo with light grey undersides. I do recall an all grey and all green gr3. but I am not sure if these were just at the end of service experiments for the gr5 or just painted that way to preserve them cheaply.
Vingtor Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Whatever you do, don't paint the model grey and white, and then apply decals on top. The real aircraft were in standard camouflage and markings, and had the green (or grey), and most of the stencils painted over with white removable paint. Nils 1

I've a couple 'on the go, as a T8 and a T4. Nice kits - very similar to Ecsi/Italeri in style.
robvulcan Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 very nice work Bill I did not even know about these. What medium are they injection plastic or resin ? Cheers Rob
AnonymousAA72 Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 very nice work Bill I did not even know about these. What medium are they injection plastic or resin ? Cheers Rob Injection moulded. Issued a year or so ago.... http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/index.php?product_category_id=&product_division_id=&manufacturer_id=8227&code=&product_type_id=&scale_id=&keyword_search=harrier&setPerPage=25¤cy_id=
robvulcan Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 Excellent looks like the wallet will be opening up for more plastic then... Again ! Cheers Bill
theplasticsurgeon Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I built an old Airfix mould GR3 in Arctic last year for a GB. My Photbucket account should reset tomorrow - to reveal my pictures. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234926240-airfix-72nd-harrier-gr3/ As others have said, the Harrier is Green/Grey wraparound - with the Green overpainted with whitewash. Main markings painted around - lots of stencils obliterated. As pointed out at the end of my thread - the aircraft was unarmed for whitewashing, and rearmed later.
robvulcan Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 Thanks for the advice I look forward to seeing it. So the next question is this,, Which airframes and marks of harrier wore the scheme. The more photos the merrier. Also any equipment for the ground I should model and any kits for such items. Figures would be nice too be nice to have some people working on her. Cheers Rob
Dave Fleming Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 (edited) 3 Squadron had a GR3 with the grey overpainted, making it green and white. 4Sqn had some funky T4s where the white only came halfway down the fuselage side - pics on the Gutersloh spotters site Edited October 16, 2013 by Dave Fleming

robvulcan Posted October 17, 2013 Author Posted October 17, 2013 Interesting stuff. I have come across that site before I had forgotten about that. Its got some amazing photos on there. I shall get a spade and go digging there see what I find. So can anyone recommend ground crew and accessories for on the ground. In 1/72 or 1/48 ? Rob

Rob Esci issued a GR3 with groundcrew in 1/72nd, which is very useable. This is available (or was) seperately....Not sure about 1/48th 'British' groundcrew though....
AnonymousAA72 Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Airfix did a set in 1/72or 76th scale Yes I'd forgotten about that set..was it listed as a NATO set, I seem to recall crew in full NBC gear
robvulcan Posted October 17, 2013 Author Posted October 17, 2013 Its looking like 1/72 scale is my friend here then. Cheers chaps. anyone got ideas on a hide or netting though.. Cheers Rob
