P-51 Mustang II Single Type Group Build

Recommended Posts

P-51 D's are not allowed in the GB.

The banner should only show Mustang type II so no confusion can happen

I think you might have misread the GB rules slightly

Yes as I said on chat A 36 P51 F51 F82 if it is P51based it`s in

oh yeah, thats a mustang for sure!!!

very nice, what an amazing beast! What scale is it 1/72 or bigger?

1/72 most likely, hunting down a High Planes kit as the starting point. I wouldn't mind a larger scale, but then it's a really huge work. Are there any Lear Jet wings in 1/48 one could start with?

Which is why I added it. My apologies, Erwin - to me, in the USA, a "Mustang II" is a car, and not a very interesting one. Only 50 (or something like that) actual "Mustang Mk.II" were delivered to the RAF. So, I thought you were joking, I thought you'd know that I was joking... I believe the title means "Mustang Group Build, Second Edition".

By the way, it appears that the Mustang banner exceeds the signature image size. It's my first time trying to use one, so I may have missed something.

Heller did a D, but I'm not sure anyone bar a collector would be interested in this kit today.... I have one bought for £3.50 at a flea market recently and it's really something from another era, raised panel lines, no detail at all and very suspect lines. In particular, its fuselage looks very, very narrow.

Oh, and I might have forgotten to say, I'll try to build something for this STGB ! I've recenty started a plan to model the many types that served over Italy in 1943-45 and 4 USAAF fighter groups used the Mustang in various form in this theatre. My contribution will be either the Airfix D or the Hobbyboss B in the markings of one of these units (and yes, I know RAF and RAAF Mustangs operated here too)

  • 2 weeks later...

Just acquired an Airfix new tool D from a club raffle and a good reason to use the Freightdog nose conversion and prop. Plus have a Freightdog decal in hand to use with post war RAF markings.

I'm actually now thinking along your lines as well. Got a Reno Unlimited RB-51 racer in mined as well, it looks pretty evil with the Griffon engine and counta-rotating props, but you can still tell it's a Mustang no worries!! :wicked:

Don't know yet, will have to have a little think about it.

High Planes has the RB-51 in 1:72. Kiwi Resin in 1:48 and Fischer in 1:32 (but will be hard to get and expensive). Or you kitbash it: Red Pegasus in the US has Red Baron Decals. Despite the P-51 base kit you will need a Griffon Spit front end with contra rotating prop and P-63 wheels (Obscureco has them in 1:48 at least). Canopy, spine and vertical must be scratchbuild I guess.

I will be last to talk you out to do the Fischer kit

I’ll remember that when my wallet is quite a bit thinner!!!

I didn't know about Fisher models until a little while ago.......stunningly beautiful models.

And the Mustang is just amazing, though if I can’t find one in time a Fury will be had, don’t think I’ll be able to sneak that one into this build!!

I case it wasn’t obvious in my posts in different threads, this is a resin year for me. Am hoping everything I build for GB’s this year will be resin bar the Zwilling Heinkel’s (well no GB for them :crying:) and “Splinter” Mig-21!

That's right, forgot I'm co-host for this build.......am sure a Reno Unlimited Sea Fury is actually just a slightly modified Mustang!!:P
