S5 modeller
Hi chaps, thought I have been lurking on here long enough so thought it was time to do my first proper works in progress. The subject is the dragon ironman mk vii armour. Have been a big fan since the films came out so thought I would have a go. The obligatory box and sprue shots, although I am sure every one knows what's in the box. There are quite a few parts, and they are beautifully moulded and detailed. Was especially surprised by the detail on the internal skeleton, as you won't see an of it when it is finished. After seeing a thread on a Korean? Modelling site, I decided to make my task harder by adding led lighting. Decided to use smd LEDs for the eyes and repulsors, and a standard led for the arc reactor. Assembled the internal skeleton first, with some added holes drilled with my trusty pin vise for the wiring. Sorry for the quality of the pic, my ipad has trouble taking decent images sometimes. Drilled 2 holes in the chest section and in the arm sockets to allow the wires to run down his arms. Also drilled a hole I the crotch to allow the main power feed to travel down the right leg and into the base. Got a load of other images to add soon, but t I late now, and it is my 40th birthday today. Will try to get some more up tomorrow.
Madmonk
Happy birthday S5, Great start, these and the mobeus kits just cry out to be lit. Remember, don't drink and model, you might spill some!! Have a good day, Warren
S5 modeller
Cheers warren, did have a good day. A few drinks down the pub and a meal after. To be honest, most of the work is done on this build but never got round to doing a w.i.p at the time. It has been dragging on a bit longer than I wanted it to, but nearly up to the painting stage now. Will post some more build pics up later. S5 modeller
Right. First thing I did was to plan the wiring. Due to the display stand being hollow, I thought this would be a good place to conceal the batteries (although I am leaning towards a mains power supply now). The first problem was the stand. It is a bent piece of bar that fits into a hole in the base and up through the sole of his right foot, to give the effect of flight. This was no good for running the wiring through, so I replaced it with a piece of aluminium tubing of the same diameter. It had a bore just big enough to fit two wires through for the positive and negative feeds. Seeing as the main parts are hollow it was easy to run the wiring up his leg to the hip joint, just had to drill a few holes through the lower leg and upper leg. The knee joint came in two halves, so I sculpted a hollow at each end, and passed the wiring through before glueing it shut. It finished up like this. I repeated the process for the upper leg, then did a test fit with the cable. You can see here where the wiring emerges, and how it passes through the skeleton into the body cavity. It all goes together rather well, almost as if the designers had this in mind all along. Also there is loads of space between the internal skeleton and the outer armour panels. That's about it for now. Edited October 6, 2013 by S5 modeller

S5 modeller
Got some pics on the progress of the right arm here. Used the same technique for the elbow joint as on the knee. Dry run of the assembled arm including wiring down to the the hand. Had to drill a hole from the mounting peg of the hand, where it fits into the wrist, through to the hole for the repulsor. Was a bit hard as the hands seem to be made out of some sort of rubber/vinyl substance, and the drill wouldn't really cut it. You can just see the hole here. These are the tiny pre wired smds I am using in the hands. Rather fiddly to work with(and my massive, clumsy fingers). On an aside, I started priming the parts with alclad primer with micro filler. I did this in preperation for the final colour. Decided to use alclad candy ruby red, looked like a good match to me. Not sure though if I should stick with this colour. It looks great under a strong light source, but looks dull and lifeless in natural day light. Might start over with candy red, instead of the ruby red. That's it for now, thanks for looking. Matt. Rickpadwick1801
I like the way your doing the lighting. I too am building this kit and was considering lighting, but decided against it. ATB Rick

S5 modeller
Thanks for all the comments guys. To be honest, it is really easy to light this kit, doesn't need too much thought and it seems to be designed with the idea of lighting in mind. All praise to dragon for thinking of this. Will put another update on soon, as I am on holiday now. Thanks for watching. Matt.
S5 modeller
Quick update time. Photo of the lighting in operation, I know it's out of sequence with the build, but I couldn't wait to share it. Enjoy. The two loose lights at the top are for his eyes, just got to fit the rest of the neck, the back plate and the helmet. He's then ready for paint. Thanks for looking in.... Matt. P.s the lights look a bit blue, instead of white because.... a:- can't get the lighting right for my iPad camera. b:- the repulsors and arc reactor are protected with Vallejo liquid mask. Rickpadwick1801
Looking good, I really wish I had done this with my build of this kit, but too late now. Maybe with a future Iron Man kit....
S5 modeller
Cheers for the comment rick, I saw your build. It turned out really well. I saw in your wip, that you thought the lighting was too expensive? To be honest the LEDs were purchased online and cost less than a tenner. They all came pre wired and all I had to do was solder on the resistors. The hardest part was fitting all the resistors ( 5 in total, all full size ) into the space behind the large back piece. In the end I fitted them all side by side across the back, around and in between the 2 mounting pegs for the back panel. The wires were a bit thin too, about 0.3mm in diameter. As mine stands at the moment, it is almost fully assembled, all the main parts are fixed in place and I have decided to give it a coat of alclad primer all in one, then a coat of alclad silver base for the candy top coat. After that the top coat of red, then I will most probably brush paint in the silver and gold details after. Just waiting for a bit of clear weather outside to do some spraying, as I have nowhere to spray inside at the moment. The two wires sticking up are for his eyes, but I am waiting till all the painting is done before I attach them to the clear eye pieces and fix them in the mask. S5 modeller
Another small update. My ironman now has had a coat of alclad primer, might need another one though. This coat took ages as my compressor isn't set up yet, and I had to use canned air. Don't you just hate it when they freeze up after a few minutes use? S5 modeller
Thank you very much. Might just go for the silver base coat next. Hope the masking fluid worked right, or the clear parts and led might be nackered.
S5 modeller
My ironman is now wearing a coat of alclad bright silver base. Just waiting for a delivery of alclad candy red now. More to follow soon.

S5 modeller
Here we go again. Took advantage of a bit of sunshine to do a bit more work on ironman. After taking delivery of my alclad candy red, I've started to put some coats on. Looking a bit pink at the moment, but need to build it up in nice thin coats. Just a shame I had to duck back inside due to a shower, so now rain stops play ( for now ). Hope you all like it.
