Tackleberry
Is the Airfix DC10 any good? Thinking of buying one and either doing it as the Orbis one or a FedEx one....
Jessica
The windows are too low, and built out of the box the engines hang too low. Correct the engines by sawing off the silly "plinth" that Airfix moulded onto the wing and correct the windows by using decals. Otherwise it's a really good -30 version. Tackleberry
Orbis is a -10 FedEx did has a small number of -30 Is there an external difference?
Scott Garard
Orbis is a -10. FedEx did has a small number of -30 Is there an external difference? -10 (original mid-range version) has original shorter wingspan, shorter wing-to-body fairing & normal tricycle undercarriage. -30 (long-range version) has wing tip extension, longer fairing behind the wing, extra undercarriage bogie between the main gear to spread the heavier loading. Vesa Jussila
I have a question about Airfix DC10. I know that it's -30 series, but is the wing span -30 or -10? I read somewhere that wing span is -10.

Anyone know what it's like to build? The windows are too low, and built out of the box the engines hang too low. Correct the engines by sawing off the silly "plinth" that Airfix moulded onto the wing and correct the windows by using decals. Otherwise it's a really good -30 version. Not worried about windows as I'm going to do a freighter version....
Jessica
Then you're good to go There's a really easy fix you can do to the engines. Saw a notch into the upper quadrants of the nacelles, firmly glue in strips of plastic card, then sand them back to the shape of the vortex generators which Airfix forgot to include. One is clearly visible in this picture, and the other is in an identical position on the other side of the nacelle.
Kev1n
One word of caution - check the position of the rear cargo door on the left side (the small one) on most DC10-10s it is in a different position than on the -30 but there were some -30s that had it in the same place as the -10 and the -40 is a different beast altogether.... not to mention the centre engine intake shape....and the leading edge wing root fairing on later versions of the -30 go look up pics on the net, there are plenty of references tobe found and use them to help with the build. the airfix kit is basic but do-able if you follow the tips from Jessica re filling the windows and removing the plinth on the wings for the engines. pinky coffeeboat
Tackleberry, search on Airlinercafe for a guide to the various DC-10 models; there's a guide in one of their sections that details the changes made to successive variants that rolled off the MDD production line. Scrub that ^ I've just seen Laurents post, oops! Edited October 9, 2013 by pinky coffeeboat
bentwaters81tfw
OK Just to be awkward I have the Airfix one which will be butchered in a KC-10 Extender. Aside from filling windows and cobbling the FRP out of some sprue, Is there anything else I need to do?

Jessica
Except that the Revell plastic is a mix of -10 and -30. You could use the Revell kit's refeulling boom parts and add them to the Airfix kit to get a better finished model.
