chrisrope
I have attempted and abandoned 2 Italeri Tornado's, I really couldn't be bothered trying to make them fit I would like to use the nice decals for an Italian Air Force (are they an IDS or ECR?) in the grey/green over silver. Therefore I'd like to get one of the rather nice Revell Tornado's but I'm confused as to which of the many boxings to get. I know I don't want the RAF GR.1 (got one of those ) I just want to make sure I get the right bits for an Italian Tornado in the box Any help and advice appreciated greatly Cheers Chris P.s. Its one like this
Dr Evil
Tornado in the piccie is the IDS version so you'll need a Revell boxing like this one.. http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/RV4660 From memory the Italians flew with two BOZ pods and the kit only includes one, bit of research required here but you can either source another one (Italeri kits you already have?) or leave the outer pylons empty? If fitting two bear in mind the back end of the BOZ pods are handed and the rear plate faces slightly outboard.
chrisrope
I thought it may be an IDS though Italeri box it as an ECR (the one I had) and in a starter pack-same kit, decals, box art etc, as an IDS IDS-- http://www.super-hobby.com/products/item_name-1066777.html ECR-- http://www.super-hobby.com/products/item_name-113366.html As you say, I have spare BOZ pods along with tanks, pylons etc. An IDS I shall search for Cheers Chris
Giorgio N
The aircraft in the picture belongs to the 6 Stormo (wing) and this unit only used the IDS version (and some trainers). If you want to build one of these, the IDS configuration is the right one. The Italeri box shows a 50 Stormo aircraft (blue motiv on the tail instead of red of the 6 Stormo). This unit has used both versions... but the difference in the denomination on the two boxes might just be Italeri not bothering too much.... There are some small differences between the Italian and German variants, mainly antennas, but a German machine is a good base Edited September 30, 2013 by Giorgio N
chrisrope
Of course, I am confusing matters. I'll be doing the 50 Stormo from the Italeri sheet. The picture was to represent the colour scheme Airliners.net has this picture of a 50 and has it listed as an IDS http://www.airliners.net/photo/Italy---Air/Panavia-Tornado-IDS/1526075/&sid=ab10a3a87fc85245ac921a8e26ed2815 Cheers Chris

In 1993 a number of aircrafts were modified to allow the use of the HARM missile for SEAD mission and only in 1998 did the proper ECR arrive. So you'll be fine with an IDS for an aircraft serving before the introduction of the real ECR (or better, IT-ECR, a version slightly different in systems from the German one)
Giorgio N
I looked into the history of the Tornado depicted in the Italeri decals (MM 7065). This was never converted to the ECR standard (all Italian ECRs are conversions of existing IDS), so IDS is fine for this ! I've also been confirmed that no proper ECR ever wore the old camouflage scheme and all ECRs were painted grey straight after the conversion, so anything in the old scheme can only be an IDS Edited October 1, 2013 by Giorgio N
chrisrope
Thats excellent Giorgio, many thanks for taking the time I have arranged a trade for an IDS and will be starting it pretty soon. It will probably be my winter project Cheers Chris
