jetboy
HI, Ive just restarted this baby,to try and get it finished, the cargo version is already finished and posted,so this is the crew version, with the upper stage and orion command module and capsule, its exactly the same as the cargo version until you get to the top of the core tank, ive done this in white, because i like it white, theres no doubt when this beast is rolled out,the central core tank will almost certainly be the foam clad shuttle tank colour?,which is fine but its new, even the first shuttle was white..so thats what im going for, cannot give you a history ,because it has not really got one, just its a updated shuttle booster,i,ll describe the differences later? cheers Don
jetboy
Whoops, no pics Sorry heres some, basically the build is the same as the cargo version shown elswhere, until you get to the upper stage?,so i,ll post a few pics of the stack build first... heres what it might look like? painting and decalling the main stack, and strap on boosters, the build is in the cargo thread? ongoing painting, just making it up as i go along, loosely based on the saturn paint? upper stage fitting for size,on the right. bit of detailing on the boosters deciding what decals will go where? making the engine,s a bit better looking? getting ready to start on the orion capsule/command module section. bit of paint on the command section, start of the block 1 ,vehicles as well. bit of paint on the engine bells,i like red as a internal colour? upper section on the left, needs a bit more detailing, etc the main booster finished trying to put some detail on the capsule and escape tower? upper stage, bit of detail put on,helium tanks etc? trying a rough fit,to see how it stands? with the cargo version the next build, so thats as far as ive got,a little work on the upper stage and orion capsule, and a lot of decals, and ill call it finished,so a few more progress pics to be oosted yet? thanks for looking, cheers Don
jetboy
HI,thanks for looking, and trying to follow this couple of builds,i just find it easier sometimes,to paint various ongoing builds all in one go,saves paint, and makes a mess only once, the drawback is like this crew version, other things come along in the meantime, and you have to start adding things?..Anyway im trying various ways of displaying the orion capsule section, other than just plonked on top,Trying some things with perspex etc?,wether i will go with that,i dont know yet, might go for a cutaway conical shroud same as the airfix, saturn yet?plenty of time to sort that out, yet, still got to finish building the orion yet?so heres some up to the moment, status pics? this is as far as the booster is. and the orion capsule requiring some detail, yet drilled amounting hole in the engine bell,in case i display, like that? decided to put gold foil on the command module... not too bad end result,? booster stage in position, cutting and shaping various sprues etc,to make the module boosters and manouvering jets. so still playing with, which way to go now? cheers. jetboy
HI,A little bit of progress, just trying different things out,it,ll get there in the end? drilled a hole ,inthe engine bell,in case i decide to display it seperating? next interstage to go on. making some seperation thrusters, with scrap plastic, and bits of sprue. removed the cm engine bell,to put some bits on. working off this, drilled out a bit deeper, all the retro,s and windows,on the capsule. on the artists impressions of this rocket,it shows another tapered stage on the capsule booster protection cover?i presume its a jettison booster, for the escape tower/rocket.so thought i,d try and get a match for it? so with that,i cut a mastic gun nozzle down, looks about right,so here its with and without. cheers Don

jetboy
Hi, afew more pics, whilst im still deciding which way to go? still working on the boost protection cover. engine bells fitted,i was wondering the other day about why i always paint the bells red on the inside,i think its some sort of psychological imprint from the saturn days? anyway enough of saturn,s shaping some thrusters for the interstage seperations drill some holes to paint red. so lets get it together.. shaping more retros painting first strap on its getting near what im looking for? not too bad so far, might have gone over the top on the chequer pattern? retros stuck on should get finished today? thanks for looking, cheers Don
jetboy
HI, I finally decided on a method i like, that will display the orion capsule and the earth departure stage,i was just going to mount them on rods, but have decided to mount them on small discs of perspex,i think it will look ok? the proposed mount was just visible in that pic. so cut some perspex. and thats the end result.. right thats enough, too many things to build,so im calling this finished ,i,ll post the final pics in the finished section, hoped you liked the build, and thanks for looking. cheers Don
