jetboy
Hi, just thought id knock this one out whilst im doing the mercury atlas,s,...im using the glencoe 1/48 jupiter c kit, plus the New ware 1/48 resin conversion kit,and as im just doing the external version,im using martins models mercury capsule and escape tower off his atlas kit, also using martins models version of the decals as well... its a bit of a mixed bag of bits,i could of just made the dragon version,in1/72,but ive got some glencoe jupiters that are a bit old now,and sitting in a box is not doing them any good?as ive found the oldest ones are slightly twisted?dont know why.....old age, they are the old type white plastic, and going by the box design and art the first or second issue,so getting near fifty year old,...so time they were built. im using martins models mercury capsule, because it has the later type windows in,not the porthole type of the first launch, doing that next? The new ware conversion kit is just the added on cylinder of the booster rocket,as the glencoe jupiter is shorter, and the clamps that hold the capsule in place, thats the bits,so lets get on with it..... cheers Don
jetboy
possibly help, posting pics as well? whoops.... well i started off,by cutting one kit up to add to another one to make one model?...checked the stash, and found three conversion sets all different?whoa happy days. but id already cut one jupiter up.b***er,so heres the false start.... me just realising ive already got some more conversion sets,so didnt need to cut? because the kits were old,the whole rocket body was twisted, even though it comes in three parts ?tried to straighten, but it wouldnt have it so i just filled every orifice with my fav filler... the two versions of new wares kit,one is a solid resin length, the other is hollow and in two ill fitting halves, though thats its age i would think? so now ive got to glue the chopped off bits back on,more holes and seams? so chopping the other end now to fit the new ware,s capsule holder,s bit of cleaning up,this is the old white plastic Hawk version... new wares split version, top check it fits? now gluing the other back together, with the cuts i didnt need? both versions with new wares kits, and the standard jupiter in the middle. with capsule sat on.. a lot of sanding now..... and find enough paint,to cover all the seams/joints etc cheers Don
jetboy
SO, ive got a white tube, need to put some roll patterns on,and make sure the black roll pattern matches with the top of the rocket,.... mark up which fins go where on the booster and match up the roll pattern? making sure the hatches at the top, match with the roll pattern/fin at the bottom. i cut the top roll pattern/chequer at the top into smaller sections easier to handle? lined the united states up put the rest of the top decal on. tail fins masked and blacked just need to paint the steering vanes on the fins, then they can be fitted.. bit of work on the capsule now, this mission has a new version window in it the previous manned mission had two portholes... flattening off the heat shield, before fitting to the capsule fitting the base of the escape tower to the capsule test fit on booster painting the heat shield a bit of work on the capsule now, thanks for looking cheers Don

jetboy
HI, thanks for the comments chaps, just done a little bit tonight,so heres where its up to...... cutting out the support truss for the escape rocket... 3 nozzles for the escape tower got the redstone sanded and painted for the other mission, btw capsule painted, also the retro pack as well... gus grissom rushing over to inspect his ride...lol heat shield ready for the retro pack just trying,it has to be aligned with the door yet... one of the escape tower trusses with wiring loom at the bottom. escape rocket and jets/2 trusses so thats it so far,its going to be a bit of a drama to assemble the tower, but hey ho... thanks for looking cheers Don
jetboy
HI,just as i thought, its a pain to build, but goes together nice ,and just needs patience?mmmm must remember to order some. id almost scrapped it a couple of times, and went for the revell escape tower,...but no, modellings Fun is it not?, just go and build something else, and come back to it. so heres the pics so far,ive slowed down a bit,on this build,as im trying to finish others ive started,so i can move on with the atlas/mercury/gemini programme,This last sunday will forever be known in this household as Strap on Sunday.....i was getting sick of building them?,but its over now,.....big sigh of relief...........see what i mean anyway back to liberty bell 7.. the capsule with gus fast approaching the heat shield ready for the retro pack the escape tower legs, need cleaning up and cutting down... the escape rocket engine bells bit of cleaning up later, just a bit of sanding yet.. escape tower leg plus the splayed area at the bottom,is the wiring harness/loom. bells and rocket painted.. support legs painted trying to assemble, and its being fixed in position,as i will be doing the revell kit version as a seperate project,so all the detail will be on that6,this build is basically just about the Redstone, in the end its easier to build in sections, let it go off and come back to it,as the glue areas are very small, for constant moving/positioing. noticed cocktail stick holder for the capsule, just makes it easier to move? drilled base of the rocket to accept the engines bells on the inside, and the tower legs on the outside.. and the escape rocket top to accept the spike on the top, presume its a ligtening conductor? right just carrying on, thanks for looking, cheers Don
jetboy
Well. i finally got it somewhere near,it looks ok to me? on its booster, looks ok to me,going to put the escape rocket on,and a bit of work on the capsule,ie painting the crack on etc,and thats about done? cheers Don
jetboy
Hi, well this has turned out out to an adventure, the meagre references i started with, turned out to be mis labelled photo,s on the web, there was a few good pics of the capsule, but as the launch was aborted a couple of times, your not sure which pics are the correct launch ones,And as the launch of freedom 7 and liberty bell, both used redstone boosters ,its very hard to tell from a distance which launch your looking at,so ive attempted to assemble the pics which were definitely gus grissoms ride, and also the instructions for the redstone conversion were a bit generic,as was the paint scheme,?so i got them all together and muddled this little baby out of them, these are the last pics here,i post it as finished next.thanks for looking, and heres the last few pics of the capsule, and booster.... so back to the escape tower assmbly... id already painted the redstone,as per the instruction, then i noticed on some photos, the little guidence fins at the end of the big fins are all white? so got to repaint them, so back to the tower.. highlighted the wiring loom at the tower base in silver, and the window and door of the liberty bell.. so repainting the fins..... then whilst doing that, looked at the photos and noticed the decal with mr 7 in looked different on the photo i had,so got the magnifying glass out and i think its mr 8? top of the ecape rocket fitted.. altered some sparedecals i have, with some letraset numbers.. put liberty bells crack on,and the red tape which is visible on the photos around the windows and hatch, and it does go over top of the name and united states ,im not being sloppy? and in the most recent photo i found it shows one of the escape tower engine bells a different colour to the other two?the one above the capsule door appears white? also in the last photo i found there was what appears to be black markings on the edge of the white guidence fins?so ive put it on? So just got to finish the retro pack on the capsule base, and the capsule clamps,at its base, launch stand to finish as well, then its done, so thanks for looking, and your kind comments, the next pics will be in the finished section.. cheers Don

GordonD
and the escape rocket top to accept the spike on the top, presume its a ligtening conductor? Something to do with the aerodynamics, Don. I don't know why they didn't just make a conical top to the rocket motor.
jetboy
HI,gordon, i knew when i wrote it,it was,nt.? just the devil made me do it?its something to do with the air flow as you rightly point out thanks for looking/replying,and keeping me on the straight and narrow, cheers Don
GordonD
Nice to find somebody who's as crazy about spaceflight as I am, Don! In amongst all the USS Enterprises and TIE Fighters it's a pleasant surprise to come across a Mercury/Redstone now and again! The aerodynamic spike was fresh in my mind as I've just attached a rather larger one to my own Mercury kit!
