1/72nd Amodel Myasishchev 3MN-1 Bison

Recommended Posts

Herr General,

Sorry, I'm late on parade but I was watching the local flying carpet display.

After a bit of a midair, the formation started to unravel & they lost the thread.

The smoke was good though, weaving in and out. Then the end started to loom,

And we all piled into the tent for tea and the televised rugger. And a good yarn

Ahem.

As you were.

Sorry.

Oh, Cool model. BTW.

Salaam

Pete

What is in these hubbly bubbly pipes?

Assalamu' alikum Pete

Hope the air sew was worth it, much in the way of aerobatics?, were they bobbin and weaving about, flying by the nap of the Earth and all that, any looping piles, rolls ?.......... I heard that one crashed, totally shagged, just a crushed , twisted pile, good news is that nobody dyed, .... talking of twisted piles how's the grub out there, nothing too binding I hope, just don't let them pull the wool over yer eyes mate.....

I hope the surroundings are quite plush and that they don't stitch you up with any old tat. It seams that Justin Berber has a condo near you..so watch your pile crushings and any rope marks ! it's nylon impossible to remove the stains..

At least it's not friezeing where you are mate, just don't wilton that heat, .........you know I feel a distinct serge of underlaying envy Pete,

Ah yes, the hubbly bubbly pipes, word to the wise, just don't blow, (not in company anyway)...it causes great offence, it's far more acceptable to stick your mouth over a camels exhaust pipe and inhale deeply, healthier too........I 'spect..

Oh yes the Bison..glad you like it ..ahem...

Weird.........but that was my initial reaction when first introduced to Lady Melch on the rugger field at Harrow...(she was a prop forward at the time)...

:analintruder:Noooiiiceee...!!! Say, Andy; was Lady Melch loosehead prop or was she tighthead prop back in the day...? How wide is her neck nowadays? In Aussieland I'd use to date this sheila who was a tighthead prop, y'know. Her neck was real broad, sorta Jason Leonard's. I gave her a necklace as her birthday gift, 'n' it didn't even fit. :fraidnot:

Took her to my local rugby club once here in Buenos Aires when she came visitin' 'n,' hadn't it been for the size of her rack, she covered in for our team's injured prop for five mins or so 'til it hit home to the referee.

Aw, but she was very cute. Uh-huh...

Cheers, Sheneral!

Hi Unc, long time no see ! she was usually a tight looseheaded prop back then , (it was the four tequila slammers and pint of Old Moorhens Shredded Sporran before kick off that did it !).Her neck was actually quite something......I could barely get both my hands around it !...still she had a Hell of a left hook and could swear with the best of 'em....she performed a terrifying solo Haka before every match which lead to a lot of crowd violence and the team (blood)bath at the end of the match was quite something, usually ending in tears and the need to call an ambulance...............little ripper...... :viking:

Anyway back to the case in point m'lud,

I've started to scratchbuild the forward fuselage interior as nothing but a pair of ropey old chairs are provided in the kit and even these face the wrong way. This will provide the basis for a fair bit of extra detailing as this area is quite visible through the two large side blister windows,

DSC_0035_zpsf57a3ce0.jpg

The very basic seats are only Blu Tacked in place temporarily for reference and will be detailed the same way as the pilots............but at least they face the right way now !

DSC_0037_zpsb95c33fe.jpg

There are an awful lot of cables, pipework, shelving, comms boxes and the dorsal turret gunners position to go in yet not to mention all the gun sighting equipment..

DSC_0038_zpsa3e4e786.jpg

Also managed to finish off the cockpit detail. I didn't like the position of the seats so scratchbuilt a new floor and seat rails, moved the seats and sticks forward, built a new instrument panel and side walls, added throttles, trim wheels and a new thinner coaming as the original got in the way of the canopy glazing fitting properly,

DSC_0036_zps84f77464.jpg

DSC_0031_zps8aa8458d.jpg

Once the glazing is masked and on then I'll fit the under nose fairing then the fun and games of getting the nose to fit the fuselage...

Cheers all,

Thanks Ken, still a way to go yet, but I think the model cries out for it. Don't whatever you do halt your build as it'd be really great to see the 3MD finished at some point and maybe have them both on a table together.......two of these monsters would look rather impressive, (not quite sure what else could be fitted on the table though !!),

A bit more done today, managed to finish the under nose bombaimers area which is poorly done in the model.,

DSC_0046_zps47a80633.jpg

It took a bit of fettling but the unit now fits neatly into the hole provided. Here it's just placed over the hole....don't want to loose the blasted thing inside !!! I think it looks a lot better then the kit's effort and adds the correct depth and window detail to the area...not sure why Amodel didn't cover this properly.......................but then again it gives me something to get on with.

Here is the real thing on the 3MD at Monino......you can see the deeper area and triple windows which allowed the bombaimer a far greater forward field of view.

(The 3MD had a slightly different flat window arrangement, (squared off), due to the new nose profile, the Amodels 3MN/S one is the correct shape for the version...)

DSC_0049_zpsd8d93e88.jpg

Also added the 'eyelids' to the sighting blisters, though there are two per side the bottom one is often tucked into the bottom of the blister though a small section was always visible...I'll add this a bit later,

DSC_0044_zpsbb410419.jpg

I forgot to mention that I got hold of some beautiful 1/72nd scale plans for the Bison and using these you can see that Amodel have done a cracking job on getting the thing to scale,

DSC_0040_zps342d052c.jpg

DSC_0041_zps58a7a559.jpg

And the forward fuselage...the perspective makes the end look a little too wide but that's due to the piece standing high on the drawing..............it all measures up precisely,

I've also reshaped the dorsal sighting position which for some reason is teardrop shaped rather than circular...(the actual glass blister is teardrop but the hole should be round),there's some sighting gear and deflector to go in here as well as the top of the gunners seat,

More work soon but for now, way hay................the weekends here !!! and it's going to be a long, noisy one

Fantastic work Andy as always. I really do love the look of this bird, no one builds them

Like Russia.

Your quite a comedian too love the carpet joke. You really weaved a good one there.

The amount of work you put on the insides amazes me.

Cheers Rob ;)

Well that's the looong weekend over !!...I'm getting way too old for this malarky !

Nowadays :clif: + :hbd: + = :boom:

Cheers Rob, I've managed a bit more work on the interior. Firstly the nav/bombaimers position was all too open totally unlike the real thing which is crammed full of equipment. I built a new floor to cover this which will be inserted into the reveal once painted and weathered,

DSC_0056_zpsf579073e.jpg

As shown here, got to be a bit careful making sure that the fairing still fits in tightly......

DSC_0063_zps5a491d60.jpg

Something else that's a bit odd is Amodels representation of the dorsal gunners position which is rather over simplified to put it mildly !, (before anyone says anything I know that hardly any of this will be seen in the final model but I like to try and get it right if possible and it doesn't take 5 minutes with a decent set of reference photos),

This is how Amodel see it,

DSC_0057_zpse3f7e4fd.jpg

And this is my take on things having studied photos,

DSC_0058_zps7963fcec.jpg

DSC_0059-001_zps7a000b6b.jpg

And dry fitted into the fuselage,

DSC_0060_zps16c9d06b.jpg

I've added PE flooring too, the gunners seats are being scratchbuilt as the kit ones are way off, these will be fitted later,

DSC_0061_zpsda90e156.jpg

Next up will be all the gun sight gear and then the side walls, after this the back walls with the avionics boxes and finally the roof equipment and beams,

I've also finished the lower 'eyelids'...these took more time to get right than the above stuff !!

Cheers all,

Thanks fellas, appreciate it as ever,

Seversky, great to see you here, (thanks for welcome at Scalemodels.ru, very much appreciated!). Hopefully I can do the model some justice.

I've been in touch with Jura on SM.ru who is also doing a fantastic job on his 3M....it'll be great to share ideas, he's really going to town on his so I really must keep up....

Rob, cheers mate, yep the Soviets really came out with some fascinating solutions to problems, quite often well left of field...and that's what makes them so interesting,

Rad, cheers, awaiting pm mate,.........(looking forward to seeing what you do with Big 'Ed....)

I'm just finishing work on the tailplane area which I'll post shortly,

Cheers now,

Thanks , I'll post my Soviet heavy metal stuff up as soon as I have a bit of spare time,

Managed to start detailing the rear end of the mighty Bison as Amodel lacks important details here,

At the front end joint beneath the tailplanes there is a slightly bulged housing that's quite noticeable as shown in this photo, I'm not sure as to it's purpose but as there are calibration marks next to it and what look like sliding covers plus a long gap on top of the tailplane I assume it could be covering the mechanism for limited tailplane variable incidence. The fella building the 3M at Scalemodels.ru, Jura has kindly let me use his photos in this build which really show the detail parts well,

1365610350_07_zps13321e28.jpg

So I've started work on this section while the fuselage interior primer dries,

DSC_0066_zps3c08962b.jpg

There are some odd panels visible too, the Russians seemed to make some of these panels out of boiler plate !!

DSC_0067-001_zps2c429845.jpg

The fin and rudder need work too as the actuators are moulded on and don't look convincing, plus there is a marked curve to the leading edge of the rudder sections. New ones were made and slotted into place,

DSC_0069_zps8dc498d4.jpg

Again using drawings from Jura I was able to see how these were made up,

1365610349_06_zpsa317eeed.jpg

Fitted onto the fin it all comes together,

DSC_0071_zps523f1d13.jpg

All very basic and no filler as yet but you can see the various parts that I had to make up to get the thing to look right..still need to add the strip along the top of the tailplane yet.....reference material is key...

More soon,

Melchie...

Thanks Dennis, but I think I'll pass on that one ....although 40 sheets of Mike Grants finest might tempt me....luckily mine will have full white undersides so make that 20 !!

Great shot by the way, shows the removable leading edge of the fin well, any more ? (I'm pretty sure you sent me some a while back but if you have any more handy..... ).

Actually I've just found them, Elder Forest....thanks for jogging my memory....usually takes more !!

(Must have been a riot for the fella stuck in the shack at the back !)....
