All,

Just searching my favourite websites and was pleasantly surprised to spot Airfix's new 1/72 Fabric wing Hurricane Box art.. Looks like another winner... Cannot wait for this one.

Cheers .. Dave

It might (should) be in the instructions, but the Hurricane, with 2-blade prop, couldn't have armour fitted (one of the reasons for the rush to change to the 3-blader.)

Edgar

P.S. Decided to resurrect this, since I tend to accept criticism only from those who actually know the aircraft

frankly the kit hasn't been released yet and some folks are already waiting to pull it nto bits?

I suspect the reference to armour is to the windscreen rather than the pilot's back armour. Anyway, it is hardly a great problem to find a DH prop set. Oh, actually in the kit? So it's like the late oil cooler in the Spitfire Mk.I/II, not used with the particular markings that comes in the box but useful for later issues.

The kit itself is not being criticised anyway, Edgar is just providing some useful extra information. However, it seems that it is possible to say how wonderful the kit is without even seeing the sprues.

There was I thinking people might appreciate the extra knowledge; my mistake, but I'm not really bothered. You'll be infuriated to see that I've resurrected the item for those who have a genuine interest in the subject, rather than show the deficiencies in their personality. Edited by Edgar

I hardly think Edgar's comments can be construed as pulling it to bits.

Edgar’s post was in no way a castigation of a kit and I fail to see how it could have been so interpreted?

However, as the subject of Hurricanes and armour protection has been raised, I thought that the following excerpt from a report by Sgt. H.V.Rowles dated 29 August 1939 might be of interest.

Hurricane cockpit armour with fittings, weighed 46lbs which moved the c of g .28”(sic) aft which was out of the acceptable limits for aircraft fitted with the two-bladed prop. However, if either the flare chute or radio were removed this then brought the c of g back to within accepted limits. Aircraft fitted with three-bladed props were not affected. The report goes on to advise that the Field Force squadrons (No’s 1, 73, 85 and 87) are being contacted to find out which aircraft are fitted with wooden (two-bladed) props and if they can be changed rapidly to three-bladed props. It is then suggested that if the changeover cannot be completed before the arrival of armour plate then the flare chutes should be removed.

There was I thinking people might appreciate the extra knowledge; my mistake, which won't happen again. You'll be delighted to know that it's been deleted.

If that was a mistake Edgar, please carry on making them. Your knowledge is one of the most valuable things on this site.

Rant over; it does look like a very nice model.

Ironic, really, since, when I passed the information to Hornby, they were pleased to get it.

Oh, yes, and when I say seat armour, that's precisely what I mean, not an armoured windscreen.

I really wish Airfix would stop producing all of these stunning 1/72 WWII RAF subjects......NOT!!

OK, the Spitfire I has deep (to some eyes) panel lines, the Hurricane IIB has (minor) shape issues around the tail, the Typhoon IB wasn't a car door version and now they give us an early Hurricane with a fabric wing (PLEASE let them re-tool the later Mk I as well!!)....and they sell them at a realistic price too :yahoo: Does it get any better than this? Add on top of that the Mk I/III and Mk II Lancasters which I still have to buy and I am in modelling heaven.

Now, all I want for Christmas is some 1/72 scale WWII RAF twins from Airfix...Blenheims, Beaufighters, Beauforts, Mosquitos, go on, you know it makes sense
