Italeri 1/48 Hurricane MK.1

Recommended Posts

This is my Italeri 1/48 Hurricane MK.1 of RAF No.69 Squadron based in Malta

The kit to be honest is not great, and the engine cowlings fit is very poor, I also struggled to hide this centre seem on the forward fuselage. I also lost an unfortunate part to the Carpet monster which devoured it, but for £8 for a replacement from Italeri I decided I'd go without it.

In the end I am happy with the result, maybe a little too much weathering, but it looks good to me

A very neat build of a dissapointing kit [speaking as a Hurricane anorak]

I hope it's not too rude but regarding...

The scheme is very different and it's one that has been added to my build list.

Dave, and anyone else reading, the scheme as provided by Italeri is inaccurate. [as are may other aspects of the kit]

see - http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234915830-69-sqn-hurricane-v7101-colour-scheme-query/

"...except the Malta machine which is overall Azure Blue with a Middle Stone/Dark Earth rudder. "

That’s not correct. 69 Squadron carried out reconnaissance duties and their Hurricanes were tasked with the sorties over the most dangerous targets. P3144 was locally modified by lightening the airframe and fitting two cameras. Land Temperate (Dark Earth/Dark Green) pattern A was the original scheme not Dark Earth/Mid Stone. It was over painted with a locally mixed ‘Matt Royal Blue’ colour made from five gallons of De Luxe Boston blue, seven pints of turpentine, 16 lbs of zinc powder, and 3 lbs of De Luxe black. The fin and rudder were not re-painted and left in the original Dark Earth/Dark Green.

There's also a link there to my Italeri Hurricane errata list.

Sorry again thepureness, bit late for you :(

but hope of use to others, I post these links and info up as even now I feel the poor old Hurricane gets a bit of a short shrift. [there would have been uproar here with this many errors in a new Spitfire kit]

cheers

So in a sence the tail should have been dark earth over dark green?

Too late for me but then again I maybe should have researched the kit more in depth. As I'm more novice i'ld have expected the manufacture to have go it right but as I'm starting to learn is not the case.

Still I will accept that I'm happy with what I've build and I will thank everyone for the comments received

Yes, but also the overall blue should be much darker. The colour chip Edgar posted has unfortunately gone.

If you had researched the kit in more depth you might never have built it! [like mine, ]

None of the problems are that hard to solve, but should not have been made.

Your build is an excellent representation of what Italeri said to build. I mentioned the colour scheme as other folks expressed an interest, and I knew there were doubts about it and mentioned it for other folks.

I have not seen the photos this scheme was drawn from, but in the Tonyot says it's wrong, and he says it for an upcoming book, and the chap who provided paint mix, I'd say this was far more likely than Italeri's interpretation.

it's always worth posting up quiries in the relevant section here.

Don't worry that may have been asked before, often I find that the answers are easy to find if you know what you are looking for, which is not helpful if you don't!

My tip, try adding 'Britmodeller' into a search term on google to find threads on a subject.

Even worse is that Italeri add insult to injury by showing correct information in their booklet [like wing roundel placement, wrong on their paint guide] the correct layout/shape of the shell ejection ports on their painting diagram, and the correct shaped spinner on the box art profile as shown above....this one, compare with the kit DH spinner!!

Italeri are pretty famous for these kind of cock-up's though!

I await getting my hands on their IIC with trepidation....:~

I like it, nicely weathered, have one of these in the stash with QB spinner and prop and Xtradecals to compliment my spits and 109's, have read about a few issues with the kit so it might stay there a while. Good work
