M3 Stuart. Golden oldie from Tamiya

Recommended Posts

Evening All, my next project, I wanted to do something that I built as a kid so I picked this

up for a few quid. It was going to be an OOB build but I couldn't resist a few bits of AM.

Hopefully I'll do better than the one i built 30 years ago.

Made a start on the build, the AFV club suspension set gives you loads of extra bits n bobs

from their kits, so I used the rear engine doors from the AFV set instead of the kit part.

The Turret is too small on the Tamiya kit but i'm probably not going to fix this.

Nice going Dan.

Thats the diesel type and most went to Russia as lend lease.

But a few went to the Australians in the pacific, so you have plenty of choice.

I to am halfway through mine but not used the tracks so watching wth interest.

Cheers foxy :coolio:

Thanks Chaps,

The running gear, AFV Club parts are superb, some very fine moldings

indeed. Modified the tamiya lower hull to take the new parts.

So a little update.

Mainly prep work for PE and Scratch work, filled the hull sponson gaps with thin card.

CIMG2821_zps4669a3eb.jpg

Added a few missing detail from the base kit but camw with the AFV Club suspension set to the lower hull, added the boat gaff like tie downs to the hull and shaped up the return roller mounts

CIMG2816_zps63224546.jpg

CIMG2817_zpsbb07c92f.jpg

Finished the basic build of all the running gear, the AFV Club stuff is rather good. Shimmed the bogies with plastic card to give the correct angle whilst mounted on the hull.

CIMG2819_zpsfaaef161.jpg

Cut out the air intake/radiator housing, this will be scratched with plastic card to represent the gasoline engine version. Backed the rear stowage bins with thin plastic card.

CIMG2820_zps8a573ade.jpg

CIMG2822_zps89f5c996.jpg

Roughed out the commander figure, removed his head and selected a resin head

That's it so far, so keep the comments and tips coming.

Some upto date photo's

for you all to enjoy.

Swapped the kits MG's for RBM brass barrels and the commanders MG for the Tasca

IM one. Much better than the kit supplied version.

Looking great Dan, any idea in mind how you're going to finish it, Tunisia, Normandy?

Thank you chaps for the very kind words

The latest work,

Couldn't find any ref pictures of the inside of the commanders hatch so I could add the missing detail,

so in the best improvisation mode, I just made it up :yikes: Probably not right but I can find any details on the commanders vision ports

or if they had blackout/covers.

Looks better than stock anyhow.

CIMG2847_zps1441bc17.jpg

CIMG2845_zps27d2e08d.jpg

Added the missing eyebolts from the AFV club set and started the PE work on the rear deck.

CIMG2851_zpsd53179e6.jpg

Not sure what to do about the front deck, the armour should overhang the transmission housing

but Tamiya got this wrong? Where is Foxy when you need him?

CIMG2850_zpsa5a3471a.jpg

Looks a big job with a cut and shunt in order I think? :banghead:

CIMG2849_zps0dc27f54.jpg

And the masking tape is holding a piece of plastic card in place which intern is protecting the exhaust grill

Comments are welcome folks.

Hi Dan.

Sorry mate, been busy and did not see this problem of yours.

Well its the add on front thats the problem.

Not sure if you can remove it, I see you have added some extra plastic between the round axle cover, this should not be ness.

Never had to do that on mine.

I have seven of them near done :analintruder: .

DSCN0630.jpg

DSCN1014.jpg

I can take some more pictures close up if that will help.

Hope you do not mind me showing pictures on your build :analintruder:

Cheers foxy :coolio:

Thanks Foxy, I think its a problem with the Tamiya kit, even with the stock transmission drive housing

it still not quite right, I've looked at the Academy version and the have moulded the front deck slightly longer so the

front Armour overhangs the transmission housing which is correct.

I'll have to remove more plastic from the front lower hull I think, adding to the top hull parts is a real big job.

Some Nice M3's you have Foxy.

Cheers
