jaw
I am interested in modelling a Jetstream T3 using the Airfix kit as a basis. I know that Omega do a resin model of the T£ but at the eye watering price of £130 there is no way that I would buy that! So the Airfix kit it must be. I know that the kit has a Garret engine which would need to be modified for the engine of the T3. My question therefore is has any BMer done such a conversion, and if so what sort of issues did they have to go through? And what advice would they give ( don't do it/buy the Omega kit?) Thanks, John
jasman71
If you can find one, the old M&E conversion set comes up on evilbay quite often, and that is usually far cheaper than the Omega concern. I had one once, and made a passable model out of it, but so far have resisted doing one again as the airfix jetstream does tend to go for a few quid more than I'd want to pay for it. However, I also found this which may be of interest , if you are really keen http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3395 Or this, using the conversion set http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/33707-scottish-aviation-jetstream-t2-705-nas/ Edited June 27, 2013 by jasman71
Seahawk
Or see this, from the inimitable Plastic Bludgeoner: http://s362974870.onlinehome.us/forums/air/index.php?s=e20afb60c9f064e1ec2074d35b80b249&showtopic=104094&st=0 Not so useful without the pics though some survive towards the end. Dave Fleming
There was a conversion article in one of the modelling mags a few months back, can't remeber which. The M&E conversion was to make the older T2 rather than the J31 based T3 I think Magna do a T3 at a cheaper price than the Omega one. I'll look for the photos, but post some closeups of the engines so you can see exactly what I did. This cost me the Airfix kit, the S&M decals - there's no other aftermarket involved. Dave Fleming
Was yours the article in SAMI (Remembered where I saw it)? I meant to buy that issue but forgot! Does anyone know which one it was? Edited June 27, 2013 by Dave Fleming

Seahawk
Was yours the article in SAMI (Remembered where I saw it)? I meant to buy that issue but forgot! Does anyone know which one it was? I expect you're thinking of the article by Peter Scott on pages 34-38 of Model Aircraft (the entity formerly known as Model Aircraft Monthly and now, I expect, as something else) Vol 11/9 September 2012. Same issue had a 4-page photo feature by Des Brennan on RAF and RN Jetstreams and a Jetstream 31 conversion by Andy Hazell.
Dave Fleming
Wasn't as long ago as that, and it was an RN J31 But Thanks! Edited June 28, 2013 by Dave Fleming
Seahawk
Wasn't as long ago as that, and it was an RN J31 But Thanks! How about Barry Webb's article on building the Airfix 1/72 Jetstream as a FAA Jetstream T.2 using M&E conversion parts in SAMI 18/2 Feb 2012 pp.122-3? Got that one (and his more detailed article on UAMF or ATF (My mind is going!). The one I'm thinking on was within the last 6 months I'm sure, and the modeller built a Jetstream T3 from the Airfix kit

Thanks all for the info that you have so kindly given, which has been most useful. Does anybody have a copy of the article mentioned in the quote above that they could let me have please. I am most willing to pay any copying/postage charges of course. Thanks, John
Don McIntyre
IIRC the M&E conversion included the nose radome and (pretty rough) Astazou engines.
Paul Bradley
Model Aircraft is still called Model Aircraft. Thanks all for the info that you have so kindly given, which has been most useful. Does anybody have a copy of the article mentioned in the quote above that they could let me have please. I am most willing to pay any copying/postage charges of course. Thanks, John John, that back issue is available at the SAM Pubs website where it is currently on sale for just 2 quid. http://www.sampublications.com/magazines/model-aircraft/back-issues/ma-volume-11/model-aircraft/prod_393.html
Rhino
I've got the Magna Models T1/T2 kit, which has 2 different noses. I don't know the differences between a T1 and a T3 (T2 has the radar nose), if it's engines then it's not a lot of help. This is a resin kit with metal detail parts, and a spare canopy. May be an option. Ted

So full steam ahead? Cheers, John
theplasticsurgeon
The T3 has an unmodified nose. Garret turbine engines with 4 blade props. The only bit I didn't get around to was the eyebrow windows. T1 and T2s has a pimple nose for radar training.
upnorth
Thanks for the info so far. I think I'll start hunting a kit down. Are there any accurate line drawings of a J31 published that will help me make the mods and show me where to place the panel lines?
Cheshiretaurus
Have some scanned J31 scale plans, PM me your email address and I'll send them to you.
marty_hopkirk
Amodel have on their release schedules a Jetstream - however, I believe it is the civvy exec version, I'm no expert on this machine so I have no idea how much work would be require to convert it to a military bird. I'm sure I read somewhere the Omega kit is now discontinued. I hope that helps. Marty...
