BAE Jetstream T3

Recommended Posts

I am interested in modelling a Jetstream T3 using the Airfix kit as a basis. I know that Omega do a resin model of the T£ but at the eye watering price of £130 there is no way that I would buy that! So the Airfix kit it must be. I know that the kit has a Garret engine which would need to be modified for the engine of the T3. My question therefore is has any BMer done such a conversion, and if so what sort of issues did they have to go through? And what advice would they give ( don't do it/buy the Omega kit?)

Thanks,

John

If you can find one, the old M&E conversion set comes up on evilbay quite often, and that is usually far cheaper than the Omega concern. I had one once, and made a passable model out of it, but so far have resisted doing one again as the airfix jetstream does tend to go for a few quid more than I'd want to pay for it.

However, I also found this which may be of interest , if you are really keen :)

Or this, using the conversion set

There was a conversion article in one of the modelling mags a few months back, can't remeber which.

The M&E conversion was to make the older T2 rather than the J31 based T3

I think Magna do a T3 at a cheaper price than the Omega one.

That would be me then! Though I see my No 1 fan Seahawk has beaten me to it with the link.

I'll look for the photos, but post some closeups of the engines so you can see exactly what I did.

This cost me the Airfix kit, the S&M decals - there's no other aftermarket involved.

Was yours the article in SAMI (Remembered where I saw it)? I meant to buy that issue but forgot! Does anyone know which one it was?

I expect you're thinking of the article by Peter Scott on pages 34-38 of Model Aircraft (the entity formerly known as Model Aircraft Monthly and now, I expect, as something else) Vol 11/9 September 2012. Same issue had a 4-page photo feature by Des Brennan on RAF and RN Jetstreams and a Jetstream 31 conversion by Andy Hazell.

Wasn't as long ago as that, and it was an RN J31

But Thanks!

How about Barry Webb's article on building the Airfix 1/72 Jetstream as a FAA Jetstream T.2 using M&E conversion parts in SAMI 18/2 Feb 2012 pp.122-3?

Got that one (and his more detailed article on UAMF or ATF (My mind is going!). The one I'm thinking on was within the last 6 months I'm sure, and the modeller built a Jetstream T3 from the Airfix kit

Thanks all for the info that you have so kindly given, which has been most useful. Does anybody have a copy of the article mentioned in the quote above that they could let me have please. I am most willing to pay any copying/postage charges of course.

Thanks,

John

John, that back issue is available at the SAM Pubs website where it is currently on sale for just 2 quid.

I've got the Magna Models T1/T2 kit, which has 2 different noses. I don't know the differences between a T1 and a T3 (T2 has the radar nose), if it's engines then it's not a lot of help. This is a resin kit with metal detail parts, and a spare canopy. May be an option.

  • 1 year later...

Amodel have on their release schedules a Jetstream - however, I believe it is the civvy exec version, I'm no expert on this machine so I have no idea how much work would be require to convert it to a military bird.

I'm sure I read somewhere the Omega kit is now discontinued.

I hope that helps.
