BlackBart
Morning folks, I've just purchased the lovely Tamiya Mossi FB/IV kit. I built one of these years ago without any aftermarket extras and really enjoyed it. Now, I'm planning a little tribute to the Banff and Dallachy Strike Wings, with the Mossi and a Beaufighter. I am planning to upgrade the kit a little with an aftermarket cockpit and maybe some other bits and pieces. Any opinions on avalable resin and etched sets? Cheers for now, BlackBart. Work In Progress
The only opinion I have is that the cockpit doesn't really need anything added except for harnesses. Getting the canopy framing right is probably the hardest part - internal frames inside the glazing, external frames outside. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234940664-148-mosquito-cockpit-and-canopy-questions/ makes some reference and http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/2/t/50141.aspx shows it done. Troy Smith
Morning folks, I've just purchased the lovely Tamiya Mossi FB/IV kit. I hvae the Aires set. it does add fine detail not in the Tamiya kit, but this is the sort of thing you only notice from really clsoe or with a macro lens, like the finger grips on the radio dials. Except maybe the wiring on the rear cockpit decking, which you could probably add yourself. Might be one of those things that would mean you would then want to get a vac canopy, as you might ind the kit one would just be thick enough to obscure all that fine detail. I was looking for some pics of the Aires pit, and found this, which shows a load of aftermarket in action. http://hsfeatures.com/features04/mosquitofbvifd_1.htm the Aires and CMK sets good, really, it depends on your budget. Interestingly the Paragon wheel look good. I recently got a started Tamiya Mossie, and the wheels had been badly assembled, I started looking closely at photos of Mosquito tyres, the Tamiya ones are wrong, too many segments, making each segment them too small. Counting segements on photos the tyres should have about 40, the tamiya have over 50. here's the real thing to show what I mean, note the staggered segments of what are depicted as radial lines in kit tyres. If you compare the tamiya ones it will be obvious what I mean The best kits tyres in 1/48th are the Airfix ones, [the revell are too big, and tyre pattern is like Tamiya, Monogram are just too small] but even they have too many lines. Some very careful filling would get close. The True Details resin one are not correct. These Paragon ones look the best I've seen so far, but even they are not quite right. neilh
Not sure its worth the effort to replace the whole cockoit for the solid nose Mossie versions, unless as suggested you replace the kit canopy too. I used the Ultracast pilot and observers seats on mine as I liked the resin seatbelts and they paint up nicely. I added a lot of wiring on the rear shelf ,sides of the cockpit and to the radios using lead wire and following some photo references and also added the span wise rod linkages begind the seats. Made a better looking more busy cockpit but even then much of what I added cannot be seen once the canopy is on.
Neil
I am planning to upgrade the kit a little with an aftermarket cockpit and maybe some other bits and pieces. Any opinions on avalable resin and etched sets? BlackBart. I used a CMK interior on one of my FBXVIII 'Molins' conversions. Once painted it looks quite good. Painted cockpit pics are in link: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1803&hl=Neil Neil.
BlackBart
Cheers guys, with your advice I think I'll keep it simple and save myself some money and I'll just make my own details. All the best, BlackBart
