bharris Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 G'day all from a cold Canberra (city that is, not bomber :-) ) I have the Airfix gift set of Vulcan XH558. I understand I have to change the exhaust nozzles to those of an Olympus 200 (I was thinking of using the Freightdog resin set). I also have replacement main wheels. Are there any other aftermarket goodies people would recommend? I know there's wheel well details but I'm not fussed - I won't be displaying it upside down :-( I'm mainly wondering about aftermarket intakes - what is the problem with the Airfix ones? Thanks! Malcolm

Malcolm Hi Malcolm, I did a version of '558 in one of her in-service guises , as a K2 Tanker. I used Freightdog's resin 200 exhausts though they issued a more appropriate set of the Olympus 202 after I'd built the thing! The kits intakes are okay BUT you have to glue them together through their horizontal axis, so its difficult to hide the seam. If painting her in her in her current scheme its a wrap around of Medium Sea Grey and Dark Green. You will need to remove the thimble radar receiver on the nose, and the ECM cooling fairing on the tail cone. Edited June 19, 2013 by Bill Clark
robvulcan Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 (edited) Make sure you remove the nose TFR thimble too. Also if you get the resin intakes you will get the correct Olympus 202 engine faces rather than the kits Olympus 301 series to go with your 200 series exhausts. The frieightdog ones are the most accurate with the correct taper and down abs out angle of the outer exhausts. If your doing her in her vdf/or as she currently is guise pay particular attention to the camo pattern all vulcans are different but 558s is rather elaborate and also unique in that the wing rounders are very much near the centre of the wings unlike all other vulcans. It's the camo pattern that gives each vulcan it's own character. Good luck and I'd live to see the build. Cheers Rob Edited June 19, 2013 by robvulcan 1
Acky190 Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Flightpath do a very nice etch set, that includes all manner of tasty updates!
Gustavo Bunger Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 bharris, I recomend three basic aftermarket to you: Flightpath set, with photoetched details and resin for the Olympus exhaust nozzles; Seamless intakes from Two Mikes Resin; White Metal landing gears from Scale Aircraft Conversions (to support the weight of model). White Ensign and Wolfpack recently released some aftermarkets, but I could not find any review about them.Other stuff of interesting is a weighted wheel set from Mastercasters, but is hard to find now.
Jennings Heilig Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Weighted wheels for a Vulcan?? Seriously? Weren't they pumped up to like 230 psi? Those itty bitty tires would have to have been to support the weight of something that big. A couple of swipes with a sanding stick should do the trick. 2

I thought the same when I "discovered" them on Hannants, but...I'm only trying to show the options, like bharris asked
