Greenshirt
For most wartime IX's the wheel bulges come off, they were a very late war mod (~April '45) to accommodate a tweaked axle for operations off paved runways and most IX's and XVI's didn't receive the mod until after V-E day.Dunno why Airfix kept making that error (it's on their 1/48 IX E-wing as well) It's easier to remove than to add? At least it is for my ham-fists! Tim

Tim True, but it's also wrong for something like 95% of the decal scheme's available. Post-war IX's are not exactly common subjects. phat trev
I'd like to see your image, but I wouldn't think any would still have the big bulge by the time D-Day stripes were on. If you want to do the big cannon cover bulges (I like small ones, myself...) you probably need to represent a subject before sometime in '43. But if your photo shows one later, more power to you- and please let me see it! The "Rolls Royce cowling" that Paul refers to was only on (I think) around 50 aircraft (or was it 100?). Don't confuse that with "regular" early Mk.IX production. bob found the page with this image, it is an artwork someone has posted. Not sure how correct it is! http://www.war44.com/spitfire/681-spitfire-mk-ixb-mk826.html Also found this with some photos of 402 Sqn (and found out that 403 Sqn may have had Spitfire Mk.IXb thoughout 1944 so may have been used during D-Day?) http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/spitfirecwingbulgesf_1.htm

"Mk.IXb" means LF.IX - it is an unofficial term used by squadrons. It is actually a 'c' wing, and the photo doesn't reveal (that I could see) which bulge was on, but I still think it would be the slim type. bob
phat trev
How confusing! Will settle on a 402 machine with canadian maples under the cockpit AE- codes
