Finally got round to taking some pics so this will be my entry. Dragon's AH-6J plus Eduard PE and RB Models brass miniguns.

This will be my first ever WIP and my first time attempting to scratch build anything... So here goes..

Day 1.

Started the day by completely clearing the work area and hoovering all the fod off out the cracks. Then settled down to cleaning up the floor and bulkhead bits. The quality of the mouldings for the original kit are very good but this quality soon drops off once you get into the added kit sprues. Bits of flash and injection holes but no great issues. Removed the plastic peddle mounts and started on the PE. I am also trying my hand at a bit of scratch building and have been using low gauge locking wire to make the looms and binding rings. I'm quite happy for my first attempt. I have also added string as a cable loom at the bottom. I couldn't find any low voltage electrical wire about and picture frame wire just unravelled once cut small. I'm not really happy as it is wrapped too tight for a cable loom so I will change this if I find something better.

Hi Mark,

Chair pulled up, beer cooling in fridge and popcorn ready. Watching with interest.

Ben

Hi Ben. Good to see you in the crowd suitably attired.

Cheers for all the comments guys. I only got about 30 mins in today but got on with another wiring loom and changed the string for piano wire with more success. Also started to fold the PE for the peddles, which just happens to be absolutely tiny. I can already see the carpet monster licking its lips.

Back with an update. I finished the wiring looms on the back of the bulkhead and built up most of the pit (sorry for the over exposed pics). This is only my second build using PE and not having any sort of proper tooling has got me so far but it really was time to invest. I have gone with the Hold & Fold Bug and cant wait to get my hands on it. The rudder peddles seem impossible without the right kit.

Built up the tail boom and added wire for the nav light (which seems to be placed higher up the tail then the kit but it will do). I have since cleaned up the glue overspill from this.

One of the RB Models Miniguns built up. These things are super fiddly comprising of 16 parts but the results speak for themselves. Just noticed the flash hider could do with being better lined up but I will learn for the next one.

Hi Gary & fellow BMers

The build hasn't stalled due my choice. I am in the middle of working lots at the minute and don't have a full free day until the 16th. 12 hour shifts seem to be all or nothing. I have been getting the odd half hour here and there but mostly making up PE and sub assembly's so come a proper build day things should just fall together.

I have ordered some Mike Grant cockpit decals also but they haven't arrived yet.

AndyL is very kindly sending me a couple of multi function displays for me to Frankenstein into the pit. My only concern is these might look out of place without a FLIR unit strapped under the nose. I still haven't thought of a solution for this yet as I have nothing in the spares box that looks remotely FLIR pod like.. Oh if only Cobra Company resin was easy to come by...

As soon as I get some free time I'll be back at the bench. I'm gagging to get on with it...

Small update. After working lots of overtime lately I'm finally getting some modelling time back. The pit has been painted and given a wash. I have added the multi function displays which were donated by the very kind AndyL from his F-18 build. These were removed from the F-18 instrument panel and a back panel molded to the rear of each unit out of green stuff. The screens have been filled with water effect. They have come out quite well but a matt coat has gone a bit weird around the edges unfortunately. Instrument decals are from Mike Grant Decals with a blob of klear over to simulate glass. All that is left is to paint up the fire extinguisher and seatbelts and she is ready to close.

I can help you out on this one....I have the Cobra Company FLIR turret and mount going spare.

PM me your address & I will fire it your way.

Hi Mark,

Looking good - cockpits really turned out nicely and the screens work a treat. :goodjob:

Watching with interest as to how the rest of the build goes

Hi guys,

Back with another update. I have assembled the pit with the exception of the fire extinguisher and flying controls. I can see this being a nightmare to get into the fuselage though.

Damocles has also kindly sent me a Cobra Company FLIR turret to add to the build so am very grateful for that.

Update: Have been super busy over the last month and not really had any modelling time. Plus the fuselage has been putting up a fight all the way through. With the PE pedals was proving a real hassle to get the internals inside nicely. After lots of sanding, dry fitting, more sanding, more dry fitting etc I finally got it together and here is where she is up to.

The grey styrene navigation lamp on the tail has been removed and is in the process of being replaced with a clear copy from some stretched sprue.

Next will be tiding up the resin Cobra Company FLIR pod. Many thanks to Damocles for donating these parts.

A worthy candidate for most needed canopy dip ever.

Along with the rotors and the 2nd Minigun to still be built she is nearly ready for painting...
A couple of areas could be better if I had some Mr Surfacer but I guess future builds will benefit when I get some after pay day.
Thanks for watching..

Hi Mark,

Wow - thats some good progress there! Glad you managed (eventually) to get the halves together - was worth the effort as its looking stellar!!

Fingers crossed the rest of the build goes okay for you!

Hoping a good dip in some klear will sort out the canopy.

Ben
