Max Headroom
Recently I came across a stash of my old photos. Some of them came from Farnborough 1984. In a previous life I was editor of the Merseyside Aviation Society's in-house magazine Flypast. A perk was being an accredited bona fide journalist for a number of airshows, Farnborough included. The following pictures were taken by me on the press day. My first impression was of the day before arriving to see two Skyship dirigibles beating up the runway - it took 10 minutes! My selection is rather eclectic but I hope you like them. As usual they are copied via my I phone, so don't go making any spectral analysis of the pictures....... First off, some trainers Enaer Pillan a mock up of the Fairchild AT-46 (never built as far as I am aware as the whole T-46 project was terminated NDN Turbo Firecracker HAL HTT-34 (odd!) HAL Kiran (a sort of Jet Provost described over the phone to someone) Trago Mills SAH-1 SOKO (Super Galeb) Caproni Vizzola C-22J (not strictly a trainer as it was touted as a light strike aircraft) Hope you like - more soon Trevor
Lightningboy2000
Very interesting collection of oddballs! That Fairchild AT-46 reminds me very much of the Saab 105! There must be a connection with that! Martin
Paul J
Nice to see those . I remember going there that year. I know someone who converted an Airfix Cherokee to the Chilean T-35 Pillan. Quite impressive and a reasonble conversion job.
Giorgio N
Very interesting pictures, thanks for sharing ! Love all those types you see at an airshow and then disappear. I remember seeing most of these the following year in Paris. The C-22J was quite unusual as it was actually developed from a glider ! The one in the picture is the short span version so this is not too visible, but the older long span prototype showed this more clearly.
Max Headroom
Now some transports..... 737-300 it looked very odd at the time Canadair 601 DHC Bufallo - a few days later it thudded onto the runway shedding its wings in the process An-72 - rather exotic! Mi-26 - those rotors were turning rather slowly it seemed SD330 C-23A Westland WG-30. The only time I saw a flyer. The next time was a shell in the Rotorcraft Museum. More soon! Max Headroom
And now the remainder...... A brace of plastic Hawks NDN Firecracker. It was a firebomber and had a retractable ventral scoop! The best Jag scheme ever, Nigerian Air Force. Somewhere I have the Warton painting plans Lynx 3 prototype . That's all! Next.....either IAC Casement 1983 or Greenham Common 1983 Herc meet. Thanks for looking. Trevor
oggy4624
My first and last Farmborough ( now a bouncy castle festival). I must dig out my pics, brings back great memories.
Jabberwocky
Those were the days - thanks for sharing. I remember the '83 Greenham Common show. Hundreds of people sheltered from a shower by standing inside the Lockheed Galaxy. Unfortunately the display by the helicopter gunships, complete with pyrotechnics, happened just as I was changing the film in my camera and I missed it. Max Headroom
Jabberwocky! I remember that downpour and resorted to sheltering inside a CH-47. I recall thinking that stowed away was a garden broom! Not standard kit. Right then, I'll dig out my Greenham Common '83 snaps today and post them separately. Roman nosed C-130 in South East Asian camo, or NY ANG Antarctic 130 anyone? Trevor
Radleigh
Some great photos there! The year I was born however, so I never saw one of them! Keep 'em coming!

Pete in Lincs
Trevor, There is a model of the T 46 in one of the squadron buildings here in RSAF markings. I once had a look around a Mil 26. A cockpit you could squaredance around, Rows of domestic fuses & a tail rotor drive shaft about 10 inches in diameter. Pete
Max Headroom
Pete A Saudi AT-46 would look cool in model form. I don't suppose it even made it to a vac form? Trevor
JosephLalor
That was my first Farnborough show, the others being 1986 and 1996. I was there a few days after the Buffalo crashed. I remember Flight International reporting that it fireballed but the crew were unharmed. The Mi-26 was spectacular in the air. It seemed to me that the main rotor turned so lazily that you could make out every blade. Joseph
