Hello, first post here but long time lurker. It's bad form to introduce oneself with a question but I suppose it's inevitable.

I'm looking for photographic reference for the tubular bomb carrier in this drawing. It is quite distinct from the Universal bomb carriers which seemed to come into action in the late 20s. This would have been in use post WWI upto the late 20s.

I've also been unnsuccessful finding bombs that match the appearance of these drawn in this Supermarine drawing. I'm more likely to replace these with more common bombs I've found in museums (Hendon etc) as I imagine they might be more sketchy.

It looks very similar to these carriers on the prototype Southampton and the Vickers Vilderbeest.

Thanks for any help. I hope I don't have to make too much up!

In 1/72 the Avis Audax had a nice set of weapons and equipment which included a representation of the bomb rack and some of the bombs. Kora also do several weapons set in resin for the Hart and Audax.

Try this website for bombs:

http://www.wwi-models.org/Photos/Various/Bombs-brit/

For some expense (unless you can find it somewhere in a library) this will be much more comprehensive about bombs if not the racks used:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Details-Aerial-Bombs-Ministry-1918/dp/1845742788/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293468390&sr=8-1-fkmr0

Here is a 1/32 detail set aimed at Wingnut builders, have a look and see if this is useful:

http://eshop.owl-czech.eu/detail/1:32/1:32-wwi-r-f-c-bomb-tail-rack-pe-set/

Aeroclub also made a 1/48th white metal rack and bomb (?112lb or thereabouts) as set V207. I have never seen it, but John Aero himself frequents these pages and he may be able to give you more information.

Sadly most racks were under wings and usually in some shadow so photos don't always show too much.

Thanks John, that book looks like a winner - just ordered a copy. Yes, it's a real bugger, that Vilderbeest picture is the only one where they didn't paint the blighters black!

"Details of Aerial Bombs" Air Ministry 1918 (IWM publication) arrived this morning. Very good indeed. Lacking many photos but the drawings of the bombs and bomb carriers are quite detailed that I think it'll do me.

These specific carriers were known as "Carrier Skeleton Tubular 230lb Mark IV (F)" and the "Carrier Skeleton Tubular 520lb Mark II (F)"

Cheers guys.
