KittyHawk Voodoo! 1/48?

Recommended Posts

I lifted these from ARC, who lifted them from someone else, who plundered McDD archives.

To put it more accurately, you got these from ARC, where they were posted by me, who did not lift them from anyone else but bought them nicely and legally from the US National Air & Space Museum Archives in Washington DC, photographed them, and shared them with everyone else to help, with the faint hope that I might, just might, receive a tiny bit of credit for doing so. ;-)

Far more than the F-8, this was truly the last of the gunfighters. You're only real option to a supersonic cannon platform being the Mk.7, Mk.28 or B43 special weapons (Wiki says B57 too but I never saw such a munition uploaded to a Wonder) and of course Kittyhawk don't include any of the above.

Derp.

Mk.7 is only rated to about Mach .82 and so would be an early weapon only.

Model 96 is seen as interim solution with Mk.5 or Mk.7 weapon in an aerodynamic fairing, along with 750-850 gallons of fuel needed to reach central Europe from Bentwaters and Wheelus.

Mk.28EX

B43

Stability problems with the Model 96, along with the end of the Korean campaign, lead to a dead end for the 'Strategic Fighter' concept as the radius of 1,257nm and the ability to actively suppress entire airbases worth of threats could not be made good in a European scenario with the B-47, 50 or 36 on their way out and the B-52 near enough to service to not need or be compatible with conventional 'bomber escort' (the earlier SAC bomber aircraft had had to predeploy closer to the USSR to mate up with ordnance or recover to European bases if launched from CONUS.).

The F-101 then reverts to a 'tactical' nuclear delivery platform with the much lighter but still 1MT class Mk.28EX and B43 as a backup to the F-105 but where the Voodoo's altitude and range performance dwarfs the Thud as a laydown suppression platform in terms of wing and thrust loading, it is slower and not as well equipped with navaids as the Thud at low level and is virtually incapable of the conventional interdiction mission due to a surprising lack of stores stations.

Coupled to the types already well known pitchup issues (second only to the F-100's 'saber dance' in terms of stability loss at low speeds and high alphas), this renders the 'fighter' model as a minimally procured variant only produced in some 77 A and 47 C airframes.

In It's Element

Much as I like Kittyhawk for their subject choices, I think they suffer in their sales by matching Hasegawa retail prices to weapons loads that are either incomplete or not appropriate to type. This is especially noteworthy in the Jaguar and JAS-39 kits.

In the case of the F-101A/C, we are lucky that there are (expensive) alternatives to a clean centerline. But it is a dirty trick indeed to instead include Ordnance that can only be operationally used by a future release of the interceptor variant while ignoring the potential of open cannon bays and period appropriate atomic strike ordnance.

That is what the Voodoo did. There is no need to be ashamed or rejective of it's mission now that it's service is a matter of historical rather than modern perspective.

At last I have my Voodoos. A quick inspection reveals that it needs a new canopy, it is flattened at the bow, instead of a continuous curve. Hannants agree, Lets see who comes up with a correction.

Now, the intakes. The news is not good. Looking at the original build pictures, I had hoped the 'two seater' intakes as moulded could be corrected by filing back the leading edge. Not so. The intake needs to be built up and squared off by extending the lip. See below illustration. The good news is the splitter plates supplied are close enough for the A/C. as they come on the same sprue as the jet nozzles, I expect the two seater variant to follow will have different splitter plates together with the longer jetpipes.

Despite the angle of the picture, the lower intake lip should be in line with the splitter plate hinge line, shown as an engraving on the kit.

From above, the leading edge of the intake lip should be at 90 degrees from the centreline of the fuselage. There is no spanwise sweep to the intake lip.

From the side, the intake lip should be in line with the intake splitter plate hinge:

90 degrees to the airflow but swept in the vertical axis only to match the splitter plate hinge line.

This leaves a problem with the walkway decals as they are swept and should be at 90 degrees to the c/l, following the intake lip.

Don't forget the Buzz Numbers should have an FB prefix, not FR as printed.

Don't forget to sand off the slime lights on fin and fuselage.

The missiles are not to be used for the F-101A/C, only the B version used these. KH has unsurprisingly announced an F-101B, the missiles are part of a common sprue and can be added to the spare parts box.

Colours: natural metal initially. However at some point silver paint was used to help preventing corrosion, at least on the aircrafts based in the UK. I've also read of grey paint being used but I've yet to see a convicing picture showing this. Of course, the picture will probably appear here in a couple of hours..

Giorgio,

Thanks for pointing this out…..I only got my kit today and noticed straight away that are no instructions for the missiles…….and not being a SME on the F-101 Voodoo wondered why they had been included but not used…?..thought it may be another case of those 'challenging' Kittyhawk instructions where you have to guess the location of some parts……..like the first issue SEPECAT Jaguar GR.1/3 kit. I fully understand kit manufacturers' desire to reduce kit manufacturing costs by adopting common sprues but it would have been helpful if they highlighted (as others do) those parts that are not used for this particular variant, on the sprue map or as a list of numbered items.

Nice to see the corrected Buzz numbers, however the grey walkway panels are still incorrect for the A/C models. The leading edge should be square to the airflow, not swept like the incorrect kit intakes.

Sure, but I assume most people who will build the kit as-is, and I had to make the walkways fit the kit as it is. Anyone who would take the time to correct the kit can very easily modify the walkway decals without too much trouble.
