phat trev
I am hoping someone may know why some 'modern' Ukrainian roundels have a blue outer ring and yellow centre (see picture link below) http://media.hannants.co.uk/pics/HD48003.jpg and some have a yellow outer ring and a blue centre (again see picture link below) http://www.aviapress.com/access/bgm/bgm72015.jpg I have kindly be given an 1/72 SU-24 set of markings to use on a Mig-29 but they display the blue outer and yellow centre which does not match any photos (all yellow outer and blue inner) I have found Also, concerning tail markings, some aircraft show a circular motif (blue and yellow) and some a shield like motif (why?) hope someone can help here! a bit confused.com
Flankerman
Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, Ukraine 'inherited' lots of up-to-date airframes (as a lot of the Soviet forces were stationed there - they were in the front line) The newly-formed Ukrainian AF tried out various forms of the new roundel - before settling on the current Yellow Outer/Blue Inner style. The shield marking is now standardised on the fin - it represents a trident. The Blue/Yellow roundel was in use for a time - before the adoption of the Yellow/Blue form - so both are correct depending on the timescale. phat trev
Thanks Flankerman, good knowledge! so following that explaination, would you expect any Mig-29A's to wear the 'older' roundel type?
Sten Ekedahl
The shield marking is now standardised on the fin - it represents a trident. Ken I asked a Ukranian officer about this shield a couple of years ago, and he told me that the "trident" is actually made up of stylized cryllic letters that, IIRC, makes up the Ukranian word for freedom. Jennings Heilig
I asked a Ukranian officer about this shield a couple of years ago, and he told me that the "trident" is actually made up of stylized cryllic letters that, IIRC, makes up the Ukranian word for freedom. He needs to study his Ukrainian history then, because he's full of it. It is neither a trident (as in the forked spear used by Neptune) nor is it Cyrillic letters:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Ukraine Edited May 3, 2013 by Jennings Heilig
stringbag
He needs to study his Ukrainian history then, because he's full of it. It is neither a trident (as in the forked spear used by Neptune) nor is it Cyrillic letters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Ukraine The very page you linked to refers to it as a trident. "The history of the trident symbol as featured in the current Ukrainian coat of arms is more than 1000 years old." I'll leave it to you to inform Wikipedia of their error. Chris. Kagemusha
Here's a really useful site for Ukrainian Mig 29's http://www.mars.slupsk.pl/fort/mig/mig-29-ua.htm and you might find the instructions for the Begemot decals useful http://www.begemotdecals.ru/showpos.php?〈=2&pic=3&id=
phat trev
Thanks those. Links are useful. Anyone know of any photos of Fulcrums with these 'earlier' type markings? A google search brings up photos of a brightly coloured demonstration type scheme but no Migs in camo or in a more modern overall Grey (which is my prefered finish-the newer the photo the better ie. Year 2000+)
