HI,thought id start this one,its the next phase of the pre-apollo flights, preparing the launch vehicles. This was launch no5,and it utilised all new fins, and a seperating upper stage topped by a jupiter missile nose cone, which made it very distinctive, this was the launch that president kennedy the day before he was assaainated, said with this we will have caught up with russian technology?.

This was the first flight to reach orbit.

martin,s models does a complete kit,or as im using a conversion set to use the Airfix saturn 1B Apollo 7 kit.the choice is yours?

Also the use of a jupiter nose cone on this flight inspired many jokes about it being extremely pointy?heres one with werhner talking to kennedy, about the rocket.?

sa52_zpsc66ce937.jpg

thats off the net in images?

So heres the start of the build.....

007_zps82becc63.jpg

im using an old saturn kit to convert,so ive had to clean off previous paint etc

002_zps1d5a3f8d.jpg

the fist job is too remove all the kit fins

001_zpsa85b57c8.jpg

015_zpse62e3a25.jpg

005_zpsbac95af5.jpg

008_zps9a662cc9.jpg

006_zps76d13147.jpg

and removing the top of the cluster, but if you were starting fresh, you would not fit this part,

006_zps76d13147.jpg

i noticed that with the tank top,off there was a slight movement in the vertical join,it was a little bit flexible,

010_zps9f3ff60b.jpg

so i cut some strips of plastic

012_zpsa7434c85.jpg

and fit them inside the body to stop the flex?

013_zpsc329ff4d.jpg

014_zps8def0680.jpg

now start to fit the conversion kit fins..

HI,Time for an update,as ive finished the build this week, here,s the story so far.....

the clusters re-painted,these are the piece,s for the upper stage..

014_zps4f5bf643.jpg

upper stage,

011_zps5d98a748.jpg

removing all the masking tape,to find out which quadrant to start in..

022_zps6a7c154d.jpg

somewhere near, you need to find out which fin to start from, which then relates to the upper stage and retro,s etc

020_zpsf97d8836.jpg

021_zpsd3a86d07.jpg

022_zpsff2d3621.jpg

tidy up the black edges where the paints crept under....

023_zps3f0447da.jpg

024_zpse41a4593.jpg

putting a few decals on now as the further work is over top of these,so very hard to do afterwards, ive used some of the decals off the airfix kit for this one,

027_zps7ba1f5a9.jpg

028_zps9ffbdd7a.jpg

029_zpsc4ea309e.jpg

lokks a bit rough, but it will clean up later,i hope?

030_zpsbea4d285.jpg

getting ready to mate the Jupiter nosecone to the upper stage,a bit of sanding...

032_zps447fe1eb.jpg

033_zpsa3a6445b.jpg

034_zps2afddb50.jpg

035_zps533ed02b.jpg

trying to cut black decals to make the castellation effect,of the clustered tanks, you could paint it,if your careful,or stamp it on with a imprint and pad?

036_zpsf89742fb.jpg

but this will do me...

HI a few more pics...

041_zps7bcb4e3a.jpg

042_zps8f6d3d24.jpg

not looking too shoddy,

043_zpsdc2cc61b.jpg

044_zpsd4be69cb.jpg

045_zps0684e428.jpg

046_zpsb4dbcea8.jpg

starting on the upper stage and lower stage furniture...

firrst im painting the dowel rod, supplied,to imitate the lox pipes?on the outside of the tanks, not on previous versions, also cutting dowel for the retro,s

049_zps17776566.jpg

drilling and cutting the retro,s

050_zps409d940d.jpg

put some paint stripes on to simulate the pipe brackets, seen on some photo,s

051_zps3f934837.jpg

052_zps730852cf.jpg

so get your lower stage, and make sure you start to fit the pipes,in the posistion on your photo,s

053_zps4f02e1ce.jpg

054_zps8716f8b9.jpg

055_zps6f369a62.jpg

056_zpsf1e466b2.jpg

now a bit of colour on the upper stage, though not seen..

057_zps0276f7be.jpg

you can see in the background the photo i used,i find its easier, for someone who does,nt want an historical scale replica, just a model?,just find one good photo and work to the detail on that, cos i guarantee,yo will never finish otherwise,as i find photo,s later of other lines etc,i could of put on,...but hey thats just me?,,it passe,s as a sa5 ,it is an sa5

057_zps0276f7be.jpg

this is the instrument ring, seen on all the apollo moonflights,i think this was its first outing, the circular holes are where trays of instruments were slid in?..

058_zpscf72749c.jpg

059_zps2d71390b.jpg

jupiter nose cone painted, and roll decals fitted,

059_zps2d71390b.jpg

lox pipes you can see have to be hinged out over the stage flange...

060_zps95b12861.jpg

the engines the kit uses 4 of the airfix engines as the inner 4 were different to later ones..so 4 kit,and 4 airfix

061_zpsb30fff37.jpg

mating up the jupiter nosecone and the upper stage, complete with its engines and heatshield..

062_zpsc59a97aa.jpg

sorry got to go,and have my sunday bath?....cheers Don
