p-26luvr Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I have a Bandai 1/48th scale Matilda model ready to paint. Can anyone point me to a good source for the 3 color pattern used in the western desert ? I have done a google, & a bing search & have found nothing very helpful, Carl T
JosephLalor Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 (edited) Are you referring to the angular Caunter pattern? If so the colours were light stone, silver-grey and slate. Mike Starmer has Humbrol and Tamiya mixes and the colours are in the Xtracolor and White Ensign Colourcoats ranges. Joseph Edited April 15, 2013 by JosephLalor
Test Graham Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 The keyword is Caunter scheme. Mike Starmer has published a booklet with the original diagrams, and they were recently redrawn for IPMS UK magazine. You will also find them in Vol 2 (I think) of Warpaint from MMS, a 4 volume book on British Army camouflage and markings. For help with the colours see http://www.mafva.net/other%20pages/Starmer%20camo.htm
foxy Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Thease pictures might help. They are from Bovington museum. I beleave thease are the true colours. Hope this helps.
Test Graham Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Don't rely entirely upon those pictures, for the light blue colour is now known to be wrong. The colour known as Silver Grey actually was a greenish grey perhaps best compared (by me, at least) with Light Slate Grey or the greener representations of RLM02. There's a very nice colour profile of Matilda T6076 in this scheme on p67 of Warpaint 1. The dark grey also appears darker than that shown.
Graeme Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Try this link to Steve Zaloga's build of the Tamiya 1/35th kit - it gives his mixes for the various colours: http://www.missing-lynx.com/gallery/britain/matildamkiiisz_1.html HTH Graeme
foxy Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 No problem Graham, can delete it if its not up to scratch. I think nobody will ever have a consences on this colour scheme. But its in the eye of the beholder lol . I like it and it seems fitting for the real thing, so fitting for me Graeme. Have seen that picture and its nice and weathered, Steve does a good job, its another scheme that anyone can copy too. Happy modeling.
p-26luvr Posted April 22, 2013 Author Posted April 22, 2013 I found a very good walkaround on the following site over the weekend. Http://militarymodels.co.nz/walkarounds Thise site has several good WW2 W/As arranged by country & by type, as well as period videos & picture collections on land, sea, & air, & modeling. Carl T
