nigelr32 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Hi all, I have a couple of questions regarding the Tiger 1, early. 1. I have this kit of an early Tiger One from Tamiya As you can see, it's the Tamiya boxing but with a load of Aber goodies glued to the box I've bought some Fruil tracks for it, but will probably use them on my Zvezda kit now. I would like to know, is this kit rare? Is it one of those Tamiya kits I should put in a cupboard for a few years and then buy a new House with the money when I sell it?? 2. I would like to build an initial production Tiger. Which is best, the AFV Transport version or the Dragon Initial production kit? 3. I have the Aber full upgrade set for the Tamiya 1/16 Tiger. I can't find a review of the set on the 'net? Shall I do a review, or does one already exist and I haven't seen it? I look forward to a million answers...... Nige
oz! Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 its not that rare I'm afraid' its still available in our local modelzone and most of the shows i go to you can pick it up pretty cheap, AFV is good but the dragon kit wins hands down. this is one of my original 70's tamiya tiger II kits, what makes it rare is the Nazi eagle and swastika on the box.
nigelr32 Posted April 14, 2013 Author Posted April 14, 2013 Nice one Oz.. I must keep an eye open for that one at the shows!! Are you sure you have seen the Tiger 1 with the Aber in the box at shows? I go to many shows and have never seen another one??
oz! Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 sorry i miss read your post mate, the kit you have is very hard to get hold of so personally i wouldn't build it!!!!!! get yourself the one without the brass and build that one instead and put some aber brass on it. regards oz!
AngloSaxon Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Do AFV Club do an initial Tiger kit? I know they produce a late with transport tracks in 1/35. Must have missed it if they do Mike D.

Hey Mike, Remember, it was me who posted the question... I just assumed the AFV kit was early.. I would think you're right.. it's late with transport tracks.
Wolfpack Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Whats probably rare, is the boxing, the contents certainly aren't. Even from here, I can see that the mantlet is of a later type with the strengthening section over the binocular sight apeture. An early one shouldn't have this. It also has the production stowage bin, introduced in January 1943. Early ones went without or had a Pz III stowage bin. Depends how early a Tiger you want to build, but the Dragon early Tiger would be the one I'd go for. W
Johan Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Hi there, I guess you already have an answer to your first question. As Wolfpack already suggested Early is sort of a broad definition if there even is one. The kit you have at hand is probably a good choice, the Zvezda one is an option, I don't think that Dragon do an early at the moment. Both the Zvezda and the Dragon have the correct asymmetric turret. If you want to have a go at the re-release Dragon Initial ( no air filters, heat deflectors, side skirts, escape hatch ) # 6600 is a very good choice packed with detail. It gives you some options regarding the stowage bins and track type as well.Afraid I don't know anything about the Tamiya 1:16 - apart from that I want one Very Best RegardsJohan
