mitchem Posted March 23, 2014 Author Posted March 23, 2014 ...not dead, but almost buried ! I've eventually managed to get the engines of the -43 onto the wings, but not without some serious sawing, cutting, gouging and a liberal sprinkling of cussing. On a positive note, I've also managed to get the engines of the -63 built up and painted : Embarrassed that this project is taking so long but I'm determined to see the family finished before I start work on the "three 9s" 3
Viking Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Oooh great! more progress on these lovely DC-8's. The engines on the 63 look great, and those on the 43 have turned out just right. They are going to make a spectacular line up. Cheers John
keefr22 Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Hooray, at last.... get a move on, don't forget ww1 is looming!!
MikeW Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Really like the work on your engines Mike - I, apparently, speak a similar language as you while trying to get them to fit, but my results are not as good. You'll have to teach me some extra magic words. Just finished two DC-8's I need to get posted here, Aero Mexico and Pan American - they will make you even more pleased with your results. Good going here. Cheers, Mike
HOUSTON Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 One down and two to go ! I've posted some other photos in the RFI Section here : http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234952311-1144-douglas-dc-8-55f-cargoman/ Now back to work on the other two...... STUNNINGLY GORGEOUS builds..
mitchem Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 Fill, sand, fill, sand, primer........sand, fill, sand, primer....... I know it's not much of an update, but the fact that I've managed to get all of the engines fitted and blended into the wings (and they're all facing in the right direction !) is pretty momentous, as I was beginning to lose my way. Painting the wings should be a doddle in comparison. mike 1
MikeW Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Mike How do you work on a plane - the rough stuff, filing, sanding etc, after some decals are on? No matter how you mask that area off, I would expect to see some damage - in my case it would be for sure! Short of attaching the rear stabilizers last, because of the cheat line, I find I have to make decalling the absolute last step. Cheers, Mike
Jessica Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I suspect that in the case of the Minicraft DC-8, the fit of the wings is so good that you can do them separate from the fuselage and leave them unglued. So any sanding on the wings isn't getting anywhere near the fuselage

So any sanding on the wings isn't getting anywhere near the fuselage This is a true story, so it's all smoke and mirrors ! The wings of the Alitalia -43 haven't been glued onto the fuselage, so I can just pull them off, work on them (without appearing to damage the paintwork), and then plug them back into the fuselage for the photos. With the Air Zaire -63, I'll be fitting the wings to the fuselage and blending them in before spraying silver. Then it'll be off with the masking and time to fit the decals. I reckon I can see the finish line from here !

So any sanding on the wings isn't getting anywhere near the fuselage As I was reading that, I was feeling sort of tail between my legs foolish - having built six, you'd think I would have twigged by now - have not glued any of the wings. Have seen other assorted builds over the years ( mainly military ) where the decalling starts early, so had always had the question floating around, and popped it here. Cheers, Mike
mitchem Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 I never cease to be amazed as to how Military Modellers are able to finish building a kit before they start the paintwork - now that's smoke and mirrors !
mitchem Posted April 13, 2014 Author Posted April 13, 2014 Engine pods on the -43 just about done. I've added some home-made Alitalia logos on the sides of the pods facing the fuselage, and very tiny Rolls Royce logos on either side of each engine. I still need to add the exhaust shrouds, but to be honest, the mouldings are not brilliant and they're going to need some very careful cleaning up : Home-made decals have also been made for I-DIWM "Ugolino Vivaldi". These have been applied to the fuselage sides. Next up is to put this one aside and to do some painting on the -63. Hopefully it won't be too long before I can the masking off and some decals on. 2
MikeW Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Looking good - of course! But now my question again - you will be repainting the wings, corroguard etc, but you have decals on the engines - how do you protect them? I covered a South African DC-4 in Future, then ( after a week of drying ) re masked it to touch up the paint, and the decals were pulled off when removing the Tamiya tape - so I am thinking that Future does not guarantee the integrity of the decals. I only touch decals when the build, and the paint, is complete, but I see more experienced builders not waiting so long. Educate me! Cheers, Mike
keefr22 Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Knowing Mike, he'll just make some more if need be....

I only touch decals when the build, and the paint, is complete, but I see more experienced builders not waiting so long. Educate me! Cheers, Mike You don't need no education Mike ! Applying the decals before painting is only my twisted way of showing everybody how impatient I am ! Now they're on, I need to figure out a way to mask them. The good news is that the pylons are going to be the same colour as the wings, so I really only need to mask the engine pods, and for this, I usually use Tamiya tape that's had some of the tack taken off it (stick it on the palm of your hand a couple of times before applying to the model). I normally ensure that the decals are sealed in using Future as well, and yes, I've had issues with tape pulling everything off too ! Let's just say that decal manufacturers have had more than their fair share of money out of me having to buy decals sets to replace the ones I've screwed up (There are NO photos of these - Photobucket hasn't got enough storage space !) Knowing Mike, he'll just make some more if need be.... Actually Keef, this would be funny if it wasn't true ! I can't tell you how many "Ugolino Vivaldi" titles I've had to print. Once I've got them on, they look okay from 9 angles but not the tenth and I just can't stop myself from ripping them off and having another go. 1
mitchem Posted April 18, 2014 Author Posted April 18, 2014 It's the Easter weekend and I'm quite keen to put us all out of our misery by finishing this WIP asap. So here's the -43 with the gloss black undercoat : ...and a start on the silver overcoat : Same thing with the -63, gloss black : ...silver overcoat and unmasked ! I reckon I can see the finish line from here ! 2
keefr22 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 I reckon I can see the finish line from here ! Just watch you don't trip up before you reach it...!! Both looking really nice Mike. Hope to see them on Wednesday..!!
mitchem Posted April 18, 2014 Author Posted April 18, 2014 Leaping Leopards ! I've only gone and put some decals on the -63 !... ...and then the missus came home and caught me ! No more modelling until the grass is cut (and it was going so well.... ) Just watch you don't trip up before you reach it...!!Both looking really nice Mike. Hope to see them on Wednesday..!! Cheers Keef - tripping up and my modelling career go hand in hand. 3
lambrakos Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 (edited) That is some mighty-fine metal work! I envy you guys that you have the time (and ability) to do such precise work. Retirement can't get here soon enough, but getting close. Edited April 18, 2014 by lambrakos
MikeW Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 You could have, at least, messed up a little bit, so my DC-8's would not look so shabby compared! Beyond awesome Mike - the work on the engines in particular - and the seamless connection to the wing on the -43. Nice. ( Always wondered what the Zaire livery would look like - that and Zambia have been on my 'think about' list ) Cheers, Mike
mitchem Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 Well Keef / MikeW, I tripped / messed up ! Some errant decal work on the wings of the -43 has made me park it up on the naughty step while I figure out a way to fix the errors. (Think I got the "Kellogs" logo on upside down ! ) Looks like the -63 will be rolling off the production line first... Always wondered what the Zaire livery would look like - that and Zambia have been on my 'think about' list. Know where you're coming from with this Mike. I've been toying around with the idea of a Zambian -71 myself, but then that naughty man at 26 decals went and distracted me with this : http://www.26decals.com/epages/62035508.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/62035508/Products/144-666&ViewAction=ViewProduct I don't want to build 8s anymore !
stringbag Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Looking very sharp Mike. Just love the DC-8 though I can quite understand how you've been seduced by that A300. Looking forward to the roll-out. Chris.
keefr22 Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 (Think I got the "Kellogs" logo on upside down ! ) Just another one of your cereal mistakes then....!! on, gone....
keefr22 Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 ... though I can quite understand how you've been seduced by that A300. Ditto - what a cracking looking jet...!!
