stevehed
This is the finished Hansa Brandenburg KDW. It served from late 1916 to the latter part of 1917 as a defensive seaplane fighter on the North Sea coast and the Baltic. A couple were sent to Turkey. Thereafter it was transferred to training duties. Starstrutters were not easy aircraft to handle and later improved developments were not pursued when the German Navy decided that future fighters were to be two seaters. Ironically it was the success of the Hansa Brandenburg W12 that helped to bring about the demise of the single seat seaplane fighters. The OFT article describes the KDW as capable of tackling enemy reconnaissance aircraft but lacking sufficient maneouvribility to combat enemy landplane fighters. sean
FLUGZEUG-MODELLBAHASTEN BE-6 (1/72)Build-http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234938802-flugzeug-modellbahasten-be-6-/ Built straight from the box, with a few slight alterations, engines turned around, exhausts moved, and upper turret changed to one with guns. Brush painted with Humbrol enamels and sealed with a Klear coat. Not the easiest plastic to work with, (it is very brittle), but for a total of 6.68, can't really complain. With thanks to Pin, wkennerly and carlos for the links. Cheers, Sean Also, thanks to our hosts Doug and Cliff
Natter
Revell (ex Matchbox) 1/72 Supermarine Walrus. Build thread here. The Irish Air Corps purchased three Walrus aircraft just before the outbreak of the Second World War; N18, N19 and N20. Walrus N18 (L2301) was delivered to the Irish Air Corps on 3/3/39 but on the delivery flight it was forced to land in bad weather off the coast at Wexford and the hull was damaged. Spares were not obtainable and repairs could not be affected, so the aircraft was transported to Baldonnel and stored in the hangars. In the summer of 1940 N19 (L2302) suffered a landing accident in which the wings were damaged and a composite airframe was made by mating N18's wings with N19's hull; the serial N18 being retained. During January 1942 Lt Thorpe and three NCOs took N18 and attempted to fly to occupied France to join the Luftwaffe. Intercepted by Spitfires off the Isle of Wight they were forced to land. After loss of his commission and a spell in jail it is rumoured that Mr Thorpe subsequently joined the RAF and flew Typhoons and Tempests! N18 suffered another landing accident when the pilot buzzed low over the airfield at Baldonnel a couple of times to clear the sheep which were used to keep the grass short. The pilot then forgot to lower the undercarriage and made a landing on the grass on the hull, fortunately not damaging the aircraft this time. After the war the aircraft was sold to Aer Lingus and registered as EI-ACC but apparently not flown until sold in 1946 and re-registered as G-AIZG by a member of 615 (County of Surrey) Sqn RAuxAF, who used it as a hack. Abandoned and left to rot, she was recovered in 1963, restored by apprentices at RNEC Arbroath and finally arrived at the FAA Museum in December 1966 where she resides today in her L2301 colours. When she was ready for delivery to the Irish Air Corps in 1939 she may have looked something like this:
stevehed
Hi All, Here's the Hansa Brandenburg W12, the German Navy's equivalent to the Bristol Fighter. It gave the Felixstowe and Curtiss flying boats a hard time over the North Sea and served in numbers from September 1917 until the end of the war. This is the long fuselage version which makes it the simplest to convert from the W29 kit.
